High Mage Enelen is from a divergent timeline from Enelen of the Stave. While the two share nearly identical histories, their worlds deviated deep in the past, resulting in the High Mage's world lasting for an extra fifteen years. In those years, Enelen managed to climb up the ranks, assisting in the evacuation that his younger self would only have participated in.
Emil's life was an unfortunate mess of up and downs. His childhood was happy, despite a serious medical disorder that caused him to overproduce blood. That very disease, while non-fatal, attracted the attention of a mentally ill individual who believed that if he drank enough blood, he'd become an immortal vampire. After being captive for years, Emil was eventually rescued by a real vampire, and during the course of his therapy discovered that he was capable of seeing the near future. His letter from Starlight Academy arrived, but he declined schooling itself, opting to take up residence on the island and try to live a normal life instead.
Ophion has lived on the island his whole life, and is essentially completely unbothered by the weirdness of island life. His father is an ordinary archeologist, but his mother is a naga. Ophion takes partially after his mother, with a set of blue scales on his body, incredible flexibility, and difficulty regulating his body heat. He's pursuing a master's degree in history, and spends his spare time either studying or providing student tours.
Ophion provided student tours, and then his otherwise normal academy life was interrupted by a rogue tsunami wave. Facing his nearly inevitable death, he was saved by Ellyn Korvyn, who warmed him up after the wave hit.
