When Havoc had first spotted his secret santa assignment, he'd been under the assumption that someone was playing a practical joke on him. Or, if not that, that someone had made a mistake.

After all, what were the odds that James would be assigned with James? Not even James something. His partner was just James, no last name.

Havoc supposed it was a mercy he didn't go by his first name.

The other-James had quite the list of recommendations, but all of them were well outside of Havoc's field of expertise. He knew nothing about magic except what he'd learned in class--not all that much--and next to nothing about novels. He'd gone out of his way to find a bookstore that specialized in magic, but in the end he'd found himself entirely out of depth. He couldn't tell the real magic books from the fictional magic books, and he had no way of knowing if what he was buying was of decent quality, let alone if it was legitimate.

A part of him considered going to Professor Creighton, but it seemed like an unnecessary waste of time when he could simply go with the alternative suggestion.

Horror books were much easier to handle.

James waited in the courtyard by one of the Christmas trees for his secret santa to arrive, a bag tucked under his shoulder. He hadn't bothered to wrap them, but the man who had sold him the books had thrown in some tissue paper, so he supposed it probably counted as a gift bag, right?

James had signed up for secret santa out of curiosity and a desire to meet new people, Christmas was overall a new thing for him, yea he knew of it, but he had never been able to celebrate it before. When he learned that his secret santa was looking for things dealing with military it had taken him awhile to actually think of something appropriate that he could actually afford, books, several books dealing with the military histories of different countries.

He teleported into the area, appearing out of a burst of shadow and darkness, in his shadow form he was quite the site, claws, fangs, his skin like pure darkness, eyes a bright yellow and of course the shadow tentacles on his back. He saw the other James and shifted back to his human form. Shadow beings were pretty common here, but some still found his shadow form unnerving.

He approached the other James will a calm look on his face and the big with the books in a bag in his right hand, "hey there, you must be James."

Havoc had never been the kind of person who was really bothered by things. He had been shot at and stabbed, and he didn't really see the existence of things like monsters to be any more alarming than that. If they decided to murder him, that was different, but he didn't see the point in getting worked up over what would probably be nothing.

What surprised him more was the fact that Other-James was a fair bit younger then he'd expected. He'd assumed sixteen or seventeen, and he looked a few years younger than that.

Ah well, he'd sure a fourteen year old had seen worse.

"And you must also be James," Havoc said. "But calling me Havoc would probably be easier, I go by my surname."

Without any sort of further prompting, Havoc held out his shopping bag of gifts. Inside, James would find a whole stack of horror novels in varying levels of why are you giving this to a fourteen year old, although at least a few would be acceptable. He hadn't quite paid attention to the prompt, and was a bit too unused to being around kids to judge if a story about a crazed fan abducting and mutilating her favorite author was child-friendly.

"For you."

"Good to meet you Havok," that would make things less confusing. He took the bag, "thank you," it was strange, not long ago he was an orphan stealing to survive, now he was here receiving gifts from a total stranger.

"And I have these for you," he held out his bag, he had never interacted with a military man before, but he had managed to find some books on various militaries. "Hope you like them," he was having a hard time reading Havok.

Havoc was almost impossible to read even at the best of times, but thankfully he was fairly good at following standard social protocol. He accepted the bag with a nod of his head, fishing into the bag to inspect what he'd been given. Military history books were useful, and Havoc paged through a few--at least one of which he'd already read--before nodding.

"It is a good gift," he said, a fair enough assessment. "Thank you. Hopefully the books are suitable," he said, nodding towards the bag he'd handed over himself.

"Thank you," he said as soon as Havok gave him the bag, having grown up with absolutely nothing he never looked a gift horse in the mouth.

He smiled, happy that he liked the gift, "you're welcome." Opening his bag he took a look at the books, horror novels, something he'd took an interest in sense being bonded with the Shadow. "There perfect," he couldn't tell just from the titles and covers that they were inappropriate for someone his age. The Shadow remained oddly silent, as if watching the interactions.

James didn't tell him, but these books had been the first Christmas gift he'd ever received.

He was a student, Havoc decided as he watched him shuffle through the bag. He seemed astoundingly normal, which begged the question why he was there, but then Havoc supposed that his powers weren't clearly shown anyway.

"Are you a student?" Havoc asked, cocking his head to the side. "In highschool, I suppose? New to the island?"

There were an awful lot of those, so it was a fairly safe bet overall. Lots of people were new, and many only stayed a short while before departing, their powers mostly under control.

Havoc hoped to be one of them before long.

He smiled calmly and nodded, "I'm a Freeman, arrived not long ago," he was still adjusting to everything. The Shadow snorted in the back of his mind, grumbling and muttering a few insults, but James could tell the entity was at least somewhat curious about the exchange.

"It's been interesting though," he grinned a bit, "living on a magic island." The Shadow seemed, to move about in his mind, as if getting restless.

Havoc didn't quite get it, staring down at James with his usual blank expression. A 'freeman'? How did that relate to being a student?

"A what?" He said after a moment, never one to keep his questions to himself. "Assuming you are actually the age you appear, education is mandatory."

Up until the age of... something. Sixteen? Eighteen? He wasn't sure, and he'd never thought to ask.

Had James arrived so recently he hadn't been told he had to attend classes yet?

"Oh sorry....I meant Freshman," he had never gone to school before, so he a lot of catching up to do. "I'm still adjusting to going to school," as he calmed a single shadow tentacle appeared on his shoulder and gently swayed back and forth.

"Are you a student?" he asked, he was guessing college but wasn't sure. He knew age could be hard to judge in MC because of the number of immortals. "Are you in college?" he asked.
