an unexpected encounter

Early mornings weren't her favorite time of day. She preferred evenings, since that's the time when the world is quiet and the day is slowly coming to an end; everything turned gray toned and it was as if time steadily stopped.

That being said, Faye forced herself to get up early today, and she hated it.

Faye entered inside
the school and yawned quietly, covering her mouth with her hands. Even though she was feeling dead to the bone, she wanted to get a chance to explore the school campus by herself.

Faye strolled through the hallways with her hands locked in front of her and kept her view to the floor. Students and teachers greeted her often, and Faye would look up slowly and show a small smile, then look back down. Eye contact wasn't a thing she enjoyed that much. The busy hallways were decorated with colorful lights and decorations, and she could smell freshly baked cookies coming from the cafeteria. Since it was Christmas break, Faye didn't know what to do now that classes were postponed till after the holidays. She didn't really feel like going to any parties or huge events, but at the same time, was bored out of her mind.

Then promptly, Faye's thoughts were abrupted by the sound of student's voices. She perked her head up and saw some students, that were about her age, chatting in front of a huge board labeled CLUBS. Faye's face brightened up and an idea popped into her head. Of course! If she joined a club, she could do something she enjoys and meet new people with the same interests. Faye slowly guided herself towards the board, trying to politely squeeze through the crowd of people. Faye wasn't that short, but she wasn't that tall either.

Sigh...

No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't seem to get a good view of the board. So she decided to wait for some students to leave while pretending to read the many clubs posted on the wall.

Once the crowd subsided to about three people, Faye shuffled to the front and read the different clubs that they offered. There was cheerleading, which would be fun and exciting and also good exercise. But Faye didn't want to worry about breaking a leg due to balancing on another student's hands. There was the culinary arts club, which would be a great opportunity to learn how to cook. But Faye remembered a time when she almost burned down her house when she was cooking soup, and if she can't cook simple soup, she can't cook anything. Then, she came across a shapeshifting club. Faye was surprised to see this and became interested. Just to think that there were other people here in Manta Carlos with the same powers that she possesses. Faye began reading more into the shapeshifting club and became more and more interested in the subject.

Havoc had no real idea how long he'd be on Manta Carlos. His plan, as it stood, was to get his power under control and get right back to work.

The issue was that he had no idea how long getting his power under control might be. It might be a few weeks. It might be a few years. He had no perspective for how long it took to get things under control, and while he'd asked a few people questions along those lines, the answers he'd gotten varied wildly. Some said they'd mastered their powers almost immediately. Some said they didn't think they'd ever master them.

Powers, Havoc decided, were a bit too complicated for his tastes.

He'd opted to try and join a club to pass the time, well aware that spending every waking moment practicing with his powers would just do more harm than good. However, standing in front of the poster board reading over the club advertisements left him... less than enthusiastic. He wasn't interested in technology, or cooking, or films. His powers weren't demonic in origin, nor was he the result of an experiment. The more he looked, the fewer possibilities he found.

A bit too used to how things worked in the military--and a bit too forward in general--Havoc simply turned his head to the right, where a short pink haired girl stood reading over the posters and asked her directly.

"Are these all the clubs there are?" And even better, the schools translation spell meant he didn't have to try and figure out where someone with pink hair could possibly be from.

It took quite a while for Faye to notice that she was standing in front of the board for too long, studying the posters like a hawk. She couldn't think of anything else to pass the time with until lunch, other than chatting people up and making new friends.

Although Faye was not the type to speak with random strangers, she wanted to at least find somebody to talk with. It would be nice to know more about that school and the people who stayed there. Faye wanted to be well known by the population, but didn't want to stand out either. A few small acquaintances were all she asked for.

With that said, Faye was approached by a fairly tall, muscular man who looked about 20. Glancing to her left, he stood with good posture and looked a bit intimidating to Faye, which caused her to stiffen up. His face was serious, but at the same time, curious.

She heard him bluntly ask the question in the background, but It took some time for Faye to notice he was asking her, making her answer spill out quickly.

"Oh, sorry I-I kinda was zoned out there hehe. But yeah, I'm pretty sure." Faye shuffled in her spot and clasped her hands together behind her back. Faye's palms started to sweat nervously as she tried to think of what to say next. But the only question she could think of was why? Why out of all the people standing in front of this board do you have to ask me? Maybe she stood out because of her pink hair or the odd tattoo on her shoulder. No matter what the reason was, Faye eagerly wanted to escape that conversation, but didn't want to seem rude, as that would lay off a bad first impression.

"Are you not finding any clubs that suits you? I mean...I find the shapeshifting club quite cool, since you know...I'm a....shapeshifter" The last part of her question was not planned, and came out all of sudden, which made Faye regret her question. She didn't mean to be so open about her powers, but later thought that maybe he wouldn't mind since SA is filled with a diversity of gifted humans and creatures.

Faye assumed that there was some reason that she'd been picked out, of all the people in front of the board, but there wasn't one. She'd been picked because she'd been closest, and because Havoc had never been terribly concerned about calling people out. He would simply address people, and as far as he was concerned if they had a problem with it it was on them to ignore him.

At the very least he wasn't persistent about it.

Of course, he remained blissfully oblivious to the fact that Faye would rather not be talking to him, swinging his head around when she continued the conversation. He'd sort of continued it done, but if she wanted to continue, then so be it.

"A shapeshifter?" He said, cocking his head slightly. He didn't know if that entailed turning into a specific thing, or turning into all things. He turned his head back to the board, briefly scanning the clubs on offer before giving a small shrug.

"There is no club for elementalists, which would seem to be the best group for me to join," he noted. He was aware that most conversations were a give and take, and that, having revealed her own powers (at least in part) it was only fair for him to also reveal his powers (at least in part). "It seems odd to have clubs for powers, considering many work in very different ways."

While standing beside him, Faye took the time to notice that Havoc had an obvious scar on his left cheek. When he flashed his head back towards Faye after she spoke, the red scar, that looked like an X, made its' appearance. This brought up many thoughts in Faye's head. He could have had a rough past that caused such an incident to happen. Or potentially got that scar for a purpose. But everyone had their secrets, and Faye didn't want to seem rude if she was to point it out.

"Y-yeah...I'm limited to some options of animals and creatures I can turn into. But it all depends on my feelings. It's kind of hard to explain." It was true. Explaining her powers to others wasn't simple as "Yes! I am a shapeshifter that turns into birds!" The type of animal she wanted to morph into depended on her feelings. If she wanted to turn into a lion, she would have to feel angry or any other feelings related to anger only.

"Oh, so you're an elementalist. That's pretty cool!" Faye appreciated that he shared his powers with her as well, making her feel less guilty.

This was Faye's first time meeting a person who could actually summon elements from their body, the only power Faye felt was better than hers. "Yes that is true, powers can be complicated. But maybe that's why they made clubs involving powers, so people can understand them better. But what do I know haha." Back on her planet, many of her people struggled with their powers. Faye felt bad for them because once, Faye was that person that struggled.

"Oh! I forgot to mention!" Turning her full body towards Havoc, Faye took one step closer, staying cautious of getting too close, "My name is Faye, and um, who might you be?"

Havoc had come to the island without any real knowledge of the supernatural. He didn't really understand how things worked, or what the implications were. He didn't know that most shapeshifters just had one thing they could turn into, and he thought the idea of turning into different things based on your emotions made perfect sense.

"So if you were scared, you might turn into a bird or a mouse to escape, but if you were angry, you'd turn into something more aggressive?" He asked, cocking his head ever so slightly to the side. That was how he thought it should work, but it was just a guess, and there was no way for him to get any more information without just asking. "Changing to suit the situation, rather than changing because you want to, effectively."

Introductions in the army often meant salutes, but Havoc had recognized that salutes were generally considered out of place within the academy. Instead he offered his hand for a standard--civilian--handshake.

"Havoc," he said by way of introduction, assuming that since Faye had only given her first name, it made sense for him only to give the name he actually went by.

Faye was shocked and amazed at how Havoc described her powers perfectly, maybe even better then she could. He was absolutely right. Faye's powers adapted to her surroundings and how she would react to them. Her shape-shifting abilities were often thought as complicated and confusing to others on her planet. But I guess in SA, people understood her much better.

Silence filled the air, and Faye could only blink twice as a response to Havoc's guess. Faye gave a shy smile while looking at the board, as the two were still standing in front of it. "Yeah...wow. You're absolutely correct." Faye giggled, and was suddenly glad that she met someone new who understood her powers clearly. Havoc understood her clearly.

Havoc...

Faye thought that was a strange name. It wasn't everyday that you met someone named destruction. But who was Faye to judge, as her name was quite odd too. "Well, it's nice to meet you Havoc!" She grabbed his hand and shook it gently. His hand felt strong and powerful, as Havoc shook with much better force.

"Um...I should get going now, sorry for the rush. It was nice talking with you Havoc." And Faye truly meant what she said. At the beginning of their conversation, Faye felt stiff and bothered by Havoc's approach. But Faye soon felt calm talking with him. Even though he seemed a bit intimidating (not mentioning the scar on his face) he also seemed understanding and wise. Maybe one day, she could bump into him once more, and they could continue where they left off.

The shapeshifting Havoc had described was what he thought of as the ideal type of shapeshifting. If a person had to choose what kind of shape they took, then the utility of the shapeshifting was limited by how quickly they could think of something, and by how well they could assess a situation. If it happened automatically, both of those limitations were removed.

Havoc nodded (why did people nod all the time, anyway? Saluting was more clear) when Faye said that she had to go. He didn't think it was unusual, or anything out of the ordinary. He'd asked his question, gotten his answer, and the question was done.

He didn't wave as she headed off, instead turning back to the board to continue skimming over the clubs, looking for one that would appeal to him - and coming up short.
