Freyja was tired of all the election crap. Vote for me this, vote for me that. The school was plagued with election posters and fake smiles all over the walls. If that wasn't enough, candidates called, "Vote for me!" And threw flyers in her face as she went between classes. To them, she answered, "I sure won't!"

Power walking past all of the fake candidates, she was stopped in her tracks by one handing out posters. Just like the others, she thought. "What do you want?" She asked, annoyed.

She was there now, so she may as well listen. Her arms folded in front of her, she took on a stance that clearly displayed her complete and utter disinterest.

The woman before him did not look pleased. She looked... well, distinctly unhappy. She was around Havoc's age and looked fit enough that he considered if she might have been military, but the look on her face--pure annoyance--was enough to make him reconsider handing her a poster.

"I wanted to know if you'd like a poster," Havoc said simply, holding one out to her. Not shoving it in her face, oh no--it was just there for her to take, if she wanted it.

Havoc ran his eyes quickly up and down her before deciding that he could go a bit farther.

"And wanted to know if you'd like to talk about my platform, which was focused on self defense."

Freyja sighed. Yes, this was a candidate most likely desperate for her vote. He didn't really look like the... People pleaser type with the scar down his face. In a way that made her feel a bit more inclined to talk to him. She wasn't a people pleaser either, but she was still a leader.

He was also fit like her. Maybe he wasn't so bad- apart from entering a stupid election. "Do I look like I want a poster?" She asked. It was a rhetorical
question. She really didn't want a poster.

She could take him in a fight, she thought, so she could leave if she really wanted. But she had ten minutes. And... She was a little bit interested.

Well, now she was interested. Self defence. An issue with people in general was that they weren't prepared for combat. "Huh. I'm listening... What about self defence?"

"No," Havoc said, completely ignorant to the fact that it was a rhetorical question. "You look like you've been bothered quite a bit by those running."

That said, he did manage to catch her interest by talking about self defense.

"Self defense is an important skill that should be accessible to all students," Havoc explained, doing his best to trim his position down to the absolute basics. He doubted she was going to wait around if he gave her the long version, even if she was interested.

"I plan to provide self defense classes after school, for free, to the students. Any student who wants can attend, and since the council budget would be available, they could have professional instructors available. No one would be forced to attend, but it would make it significantly more accessible to those who don't have a lot of money lying around for out of school activities."

Freyja groaned. Was he really answering that question? He must be stupid, she thought. "Wow, how did you guess?" she asked sarcastically.

"I've only been swarmed by you all between classes."
She listened to what he had to say about self-defence. She was wasting his time, she knew, and really she would vote for him anyway because she just didn't give a shit, but she listened.

It was a valid statement. She nodded along, before saying, "Actually, I couldn't agree more. You're not like the ones who want to install fountains and shit. I still don't like the election though. Also, why isn't it compulsory? Everyone needs self-defence."

Havoc at least got that rhetorical question, keeping the answer to himself.

"Mandatory courses would be a hard change to make," Havoc pointed out. "And much harder to pass. Better to implement it as an optional program, and then work from there."

It seemed like he'd managed to hook her in, despite her obvious disinterest in the elections.

"It's an important issue, but if you force everyone into an unexpected class, you'll only get complaints and scheduling issues." Lots and lots of scheduling issues. Some had jobs. Some would be physically incapable of taking classes. There were a lot of reasons not to make it mandatory, even if Havoc personally felt it should be.

Freyja still listened, checked her watch to make sure the dumb elections weren't interfering with her education and then listened some more.

She had to admit that this guy was probably the most sane candidate she had come across. As far as she could tell. And his reasoning was fair, even if she believed the classes should be mandatory.

"Alright, okay then. Um, sure. Look, as long as you aren't some spineless idiot signing up for this for popularity, I'll vote for you. Which makes me ask, why are you doing this? You don't look like the election sort of guy."

She looked him up and down. Did big guys who looked like they'd just come out of a war always do this sort of thing?

Havoc had a pretty clear reason for running in the elections, even if it was an unusual one. Most ran for the good of the school or because it'll make me popular.

"I'm a member of the United States army," Havoc explained. "I have minimal experience with civilian leadership, and this is an excellent opportunity to learn. It's hands on experience at no cost to myself, allowing me to brush up on my skills."

"In so many words, job experience," Havoc said, cracking a rare, genuine smile of amusement at his own little joke.

"My appearance allows me to stand out from the usual entrants, which makes me unique. A benefit, in many ways."

Well that explained it, Freyja thought. The need for self-defence, the appearance, his whole demeanour. He was an army man. It was a respectable job, she knew, she was going to become a warrior.

She nodded again. This guy had gained some of her respect. The rest was still not there because he signed up for the election. His reasons were honest and actually quite understandable.

"Alright then, you pass. I guess you've actually thought this thing through, and while I continue to think you're stupid for doing all this vote me, vote me election crap, I respect your reasons. I also can't see any other candidates who give a shit about the school instead of their social standing or the potential fountains they could add. So yeah, I guess you get my vote."

That wasn't saying she liked him at all. She just didn't dislike the look of him as much as other candidates. Maybe, just maybe, he could do some good.

It seemed like he'd won her over... mostly. Havoc offered his spare hand for a shake, deciding a formal introduction was necessary in case they ran into each other again. It certainly seemed possible, and if she was as interested in self defense as he was, it was probable they might cross paths once again.

"James Havoc," he said by way of introduction. "I go by Havoc. I hope we'll get a chance to speak again, perhaps once the elections are over?"

And he did mean it. She was his kind of person--vaguely military, interested in self defense, the works.

"And I hope the rest of your day is pleasant."
