There was a lot of water.

That was the only thing Eroshay could comprehend. The rest, everything else she did was pure instinct, and she followed it without hesitation because it was the thing that would keep her alive. All the fear burning in her gut was the energy she needed in this terrible situation.

She had crawled as high as she could up a building, a home, and placed her back against the chimney, tucking her head low to her knees. To Shay, things were both very quick and very sluggish. Her mind moved a mile a second, but the world around her, she saw that in slow-motion. And all she witnessed was destruction.

Not many things made Shay want to cry, but this did. Everything she had known and grown up around felt snatched away within seconds. And she could hear the whispers of the dead screaming in her ears in their horror. Ero held her head tighter and let her tears roll down her cheeks. She didn't bother to hide them from people who wouldn't be around.

She stayed like that until things died down. How fast did a tsunami move? Was it hours? Seconds? It couldn't have been days, Shay would have realized that. But soon, the only sound left was her crying. She hadn't even realized how hard she'd been sobbing. Maybe it was just the only sound she could hear because Shay was certain there had to be other noises around her.

She didn't look up and she didn't plan to.

It was a blessing (although not terribly surprising) that the police department had several members capable of creating barriers. They'd set up a base on the top floor of the police department, and then they'd sat tight until the wave had hit. The entire city was swamped, and plenty of it was damaged, but the wave had passed. It was, as far as anyone could tell, just the one. It just made the whole thing more suspicious and alarming, because tsunami's more often came in groups, the same way an earthquake normally had aftershocks or repeats.

Angelo didn't see it pass, of course. But he felt it - could feel the sudden sense of wrongness, the sheer amount of people who hadn't evacuated, who had died when the wave hit. It was overwhelming, and he'd vomited in a corner, his head aching. He would have a lot of work to do, both helping the dead pass on, and helping the living to not.

They'd split up into little groups, grabbed what they could, and then they'd headed out into the city. Angelo had slung a heavy pack of emergency supplies over his back, and gone gone wading into it properly. The water was waist deep and still slowly draining, with reports increasingly coming in of things going wrong elsewhere in the city.

He could feel them all around him, spirits lingering above battered and broken bodies. Most of the time he couldn't even see them, but he could feel the presence of a soul, lingering in the water. They weren't trying to stay - their deaths had simply been too sudden and violent for them to move on to whatever there was that came next.

He simply had to reach down, touching them gently and helping them move on. The majority slipped away with only the slightest touch, while some lingered a bit more. If the other cops that were near him noticed anything, none of them seemed willing to say anything.

It was the humans that were an issue. How was he supposed to find them? He had no magic senses that would tell him where the survivors were, only the dead - which meant he was going to have to do things manually.

"Anyone out there?" He called, raising his voice to try and be heard.

Ash didn't know why he agreed to help with the search efforts. He could have easily said no. He's a homicide detective not an officer. Ash also felt pretty useless because his power was not really helpful in this situation. Turning into a Fox won't help anyone.

Ash was shocked by the amount of destruction. He's lived his entire life in Manta Carlos and seeing everything gone was horrible. Ash passed his childhood house and winced at the destruction. Sure, most of his family has disowned him but his younger brother Lancelot was still in touch. "You better be fine Lance..." Ash muttered as he carefully stepped over the ruins of his old home.

Ash moved on. He still hasn't found anyone. The situation was looking more bleak by the minute and Ash didn't like that feeling. "Anyone out there?" A voice called. Must be another person in the search group. Ash was going to ignore the call but he heard something else.

Crying.

Ash hopped over some debris to get to the source of the crying. "Found someone!" Ash called. "Hey, are you hurt?" Ash asked the young child.

Eroshay leaned away from the man. Her head shot up, eyes red from all her crying. Shay wished she could stop, but the tears continued, and soon she was hiccuping, too. She looked over her body. Shay didn't know if she was wounded. She was cold, freezing even, but her body was numb, and her mind was fuzzy.

On her hand was a bloody, messy gash. She had gotten it when climbing to safety, but beyond that, she was wound-free. Shay held the hand out to him to see. If he tried to touch her, though, she would pull back out of reach.

"I'm — f-fine," her voice was scratchier than she would have liked.

Shay rubbed at her eyes as if to hide the evidence of tears.

There was no reply to his call from an injured party - but a familiar enough voice rang out, and Angelo headed towards it. He wasn't familiar enough with the person to know their name or anything, but he'd seen him around the office. Angelo didn't really work homicide - if he did, it was because he'd been called to the case unaware. He was no detective, just a cop, and he liked it that way.

In the end, he supposed it didn't matter - they'd all be seeing a lot of homicide if the rumors were true, and the entire wave was really magical in nature.

He scrambled over a ruined car, spotting both the detective and what looked like a young girl at a distance and heading towards them.

"Anyone else in the area?" Beyond the dead - he could still feel them there. There were more than he'd ever felt before, but he couldn't get even a vague idea of an actual body count. Even one was too many. The water was a bit shallower there, and there was still the seemingly endless insistent tug around his ankles, the water slowly washing back out to the ocean, running downhill as it went.

He pulled his backpack off, setting it on top of a car to keep it out of the water, and started to dig for medical supplies.

"I've got some antiseptic and bandages - that said, you'll want to keep that out of the water if you can. Were you here the whole time? Who were you with?" He glanced over his shoulder, watching the girl as he asked.

"Anyone else in the area?" Asked the same voice that called out earlier.

"Don't think so." Ash replied and looked back at the girl. He didn't flinch when he saw the wound on her hand. Ash is a homicide detective he's seen much worse.

"I'm — f-fine." The girl said.

Ash nodded. He could tell that the girl didn't really want to be touched and he understood. Who knows what happened to her? Not Ash.

"I've got some antiseptic and bandages - that said, you'll want to keep that out of the water if you can. Were you here the whole time? Who were you with?" The cop asked the girl.

Ash stood off to the side. He didn't want to get in the way.

Shay was trembling. She didn't know why because she was numb, not cold. "Yes," she said when asked whether she was here the whole time. Shay felt she could have clarified the point a bit, but she didn't have the energy or inclination. "I wasn't with anyone. It's just me."

Shay scooted to look over the edge of the house. She wondered if she could get down on her own. When her hand grazed the roof, she winced and looked at it. It hadn't stung before when she was distracted, but she felt it now. It was deeper than she thought it would be; Shay hadn't spent much time looking at it or studying about it before now. At least, it wasn't deep enough to scar; she didn't believe.

She held it out again to show the man with the antiseptic and bandages. He had the air of someone who knew what he was doing; she also got the feeling the man closest to her wasn't a huge fan of children, so she'd keep her primary attention on Angelo.

"Will this scar?" Shay was glad when her voice only quivered a little. "Also, I'd rather just be given the antiseptic and bandages. I can put them on myself."

So she'd been alone when the wave hit. Angelo wasn't sure what to make of that. It was possible she'd been in danger, and been saved by her powers, but it was equally likely she'd simply been saved by random chance. Tsunamis, much like hurricanes, didn't wash away everything - they simply washed away most things.

The other cop had gone quiet, so Angelo pulled himself up onto the roof with one seamless motion, moving over to crouch beside the girl. It was strange to realize, but he simply wasn't tired. He'd trudged through water, passed all kinds of debris, and yet he was no more winded than if he'd walked up the stairs to his apartment. It was hard for him not to draw the connection between the number of souls he'd already sent off, and his clear lack of exhaustion.

He looked over her upturned hands, considering them carefully. He had plenty of scars (including several on his face), and could be considered a bit of an expert on the subject. "Maybe. The biggest trick with scars is that a lot of things that would scar won't really show up if you're careful when they're healing, and a lot of things that wouldn't leave scars will if you pick at them. You'll need to be careful, and try not to bother them." Ideally she'd even get proper medical care, but he somehow doubted that some scrapes on a girl's hands were going to get more than a quick glance. Simply put, the hospital had better things to do.

"We need to get you down though. The waters still a bit deep, but it's slowly lowering." Of course, to him it simply meant he'd probably be passing her down to the other officer on the ground. He gave her a quick, reassuring smile, glancing over the edge of the roof down towards the detective.

Shay fell back harder against the chimney as Angelo pulled himself onto the roof. She wished she could move that easily over obstacles. Maybe if she, too, were a giant. When he was in front of her, Shay couldn't help but gape momentarily at the scars on his face. It looked like whatever had made them hurt. Bad. She had the urge to reach forward and touch them, inspect them, but she would never do that.

She would have hated to admit it, but his smile did ease her fears. Shay had never been comfortable around authority figures, so he should have been intimidating, if not terrifying, but he wasn't. Looking over the edge of the house again, she bit her lower lip thoughtfully. "I can probably just climb down." She didn't want to take the chance that he would touch her. She had seen enough bad things today.

"Shouldn't I bandage my hand first, though?"

"Would probably be safer if you were helped down." The roof wasn't exactly the most stable thing. The last thing he wanted was for her to drop off the edge and have it collapse under her. At least if the roof went down with him lifting her, he'd be able to shield her from the worst of the blow.

"You sure you don't want help with your hands first though?" He wasn't a medic, but he knew basic first aid. He wasn't going to be able to do anything big, but something as basic as bandaging up injured hands? He could do that. He'd dealt with much worse back in the day, often on himself. He'd had to deal with plenty of his own injuries to keep the blood loss to a minimum, only getting proper medical treatment once he was back at home.
