Dom Rightsalt, the event coordinator, was exceptionally pleased with the weather for today. The council had given him the power to modify the weather as needed to create the perfect winter atmosphere, but he didn't even have to lift a finger.

Snow flurries fell from the sky and though it was cold, it was not exceptionally so. The smell of evergreens and hot chocolate filled the air. The dark-haired man was holding a cup of the hot chocolate in one hand and his ornament in the other.

"Good evening, Ladies and gentleman," Dom said. "Without further ado, let us now light this tree to usher in glad tidings for the holiday season. On the count of three....one...twoo..."

When the chanting crowd said three, the giant evergreen sprung to light. It was lit magically and the whole park was aglow.

"Please feel free in joining us as we celebrate this holiday season by hanging your own ornament on the tree," he said. "No matter where you are from, no matter who you are, you are all part of what makes the Manta Carlos Islands amazing."

The hung his ornament on the tree and stepped back to join the festivities.

Jacob had shown no small amount of gratitude toward Yumi when she agreed to let Chiru stay on the island after Yumi's departure back to Japan. Realistically, Chiru could have made the decision herself as she was of age, but Yumi often preferred to have a tight handle on things as per her usual nature. Now Jacob and Chiru has a few more days to spend together before they had to separate again, a thought that killed Jacob inside. At least he would spending the next few days with his daughter during the holiday season. He would make the most of the time because he was unsure of how long it would be before he could see her in person again.

"This place is still so amazing, dad. Snow? Isn't this place supposed to be a tropical island?"

"I'd chalk this up to weather magic or something, angel. Something to make the event more festive."

Father and daughter walked among the crowd gathered in the park, enjoying the sights and smells of the holiday season. They were dressed warmly, with Jacob more so than Chiru. Jacob had grown used to the tropical weather of Manta Carlos, so the lower temperatures affected him more and he was decked out in hat and gloves. Chiru was okay enough to allow fashion to take over, and she had a wonderful jacket/scarf combo that Jacob envied.

He bought them each a cup of cocoa to sip as they admired the lighting of the tree together. Part of him hoped that it was would make up for the many other Christmases he had missed in person with Chiru.

"I wonder where they had to fly this thing in from. I'm certain pine trees don't grow here."

"Probably a magic tree. You think it talks or something?"

Artesia didnt like all these ridiculous christmas decorations and silly nonsense. It was dumb. WHY WHERE PEOPLE PUTTING TREES IN THEIR HOUSES! THATS WHERE BIRDS AND SQUIRRELS AND OTHER SMALL ANIMALS LIVE!!! They would pay when Karma struck back and the Squirrels rose up and took over the island, Artesia was ready for that, she was a huntress and had many Squirrel arrows, no one else was ready

BAHK HAMBOOG!

Artesia had prepared her christmas ornament, she decided to participate in the event so that she could look cooler, and then maybe Yoka Sake would want to marry her. Artesias ornament was a skull in a glass ball, it was defiantly a real skull, and not one that she bought from hot topic.

BAA HAGBURGER!!!

She gave a mean "snarky" expression as she hung it up, it was the best ornament because it was a cool skeleton, its name was Jeffry, did any of the other ornaments have names? Probably not.

BAAAAAAA BAAAAAAAAA BLACKSHEEEEEEEP!!!!!!!!

Artesia stepped over to the drink table and made herself some of the tea that they had prepared specifically for elves because they where the master dominant race of the world, at least thats what her mom told her, but it didnt taste like tea at all! It tasted like chocolate! This was dumb!

BAA HUMBOOGER!

Queen watched in awe as the giant tree was lit up. Her adoptive mother had Christmas back at home with her own tree, but it was never one this big. Her golden eyes watched as a few people began putting ornaments on the tree, then she looked down to the bauble in the grasp of her talons. She had brought it from home.

She approached the tree in mid-flight, gazing for a place to put her ornament. Swiftly, she decided to fly a bit towards a higher portion of the tree since she could fly, and left the lower portion untouched for those who couldn't fly. She found a branch she liked and placed her tacky-coloured bauble upon it, promtply flying backwards to get a good look at it afterwards.

After satisfied with the placement of her bauble, she then flew to one of the tables with drinks set upon them and rested upon its edge. She stared at the various drinks, trying to decide whether or not it would be safe for her to drink one, as an owl.

Christmas. Christmas? How the hell had it gotten to be christmas time already? If a week ago you had asked Nicholas what month it was, he'd have guessed october or maybe November. Instead it was already well into December. He'd been living with Ulrich for literal months, and while they'd made some progress, it still... well, it wasn't very good.

So he'd towed Ulrich out to get used to being in public for what seemed like the hundredth time. This time was a bit more focused though. This time he was going to show him a holiday, and there was probably going to be a crowd, and Ulrich was just going to have to deal with it.

He'd bundled himself up in a winter jacket, the empty arm left to dangle. The winter was always worse for him in that regard, since it was that much harder to look natural, but he did what he could. He'd even gone so far as to find a scarf, wrapping it around his neck and face as he nudged Ulrich towards the tree, which was now lit up impressively.

"This is an early christmas celebration. Christmas isn't for another week and a bit, but no one is going to be doing town stuff when they're at home on christmas."

The snow had started to fall a few months after his arrival. Of course Ulrich knew of snow; there had been countless times that he'd watch it fall from just underneath the surface, far out at sea. And then there was marine snow, an arguably more useful but more disgusting version of regular snow deep underneath the water. Dead things fell from the surface and fed what small things lived in the abysses.

But watching it on the surface was a bit different. He'd never in his life come up onto land during the wintertime; his rare visits were always during the summer. But now he was being dragged through throngs of humans on a mission to see a deity or something.

Well, not a deity. A tree. A tree that these humans seemed to worship every year during their wintertime, alongside a fat man in a red suit.

Humans were fucking weird.

Ulrich stared at the brightly lit tree, cocking his head slightly to one side as Nicolas explained briefly. "Christmas? So what is this all about? I take it that it's an important tradition to you humans."

"For the record, it's one of our more widespread traditions. Mostly humans vary depending on the area they live in and the culture they're from, but this one is a pretty worldwide thing." He was supposed to be a bodyguard, but instead he felt like a tour guide the overwhelming majority of the time. His job involved what seemed like nearly constant explaining. It didn't help that Ulrich's people were so out there. As far as Nicolas could tell, they didn't have any holidays at all.

"Originally Christmas was supposed to be a religion thing, only it was built off another separate religious holiday, and... alright it'll just be really confusing to get into the history. Lots of people celebrate it without religious context, and it's about giving gifts to family and friends." That was the lamest explanation of Christmas ever, but the more detailed his explanation got, the more questions he was going to get.

He paused, gesturing to what appeared to be an owl hanging a christmas ornament up on the tree.

"This would be a christmas tree. People hang ornaments on it to decorate. Sometimes they're just designs, and sometimes they have some kind of significance to the person."

Ulrich didn't take his eyes off the tree the entire time Nicolas was explaining it to him. Instead, his eyes traveled from one point to another, taking in all the decorations and lights. It looked like some sort of bioluminescent creature, and he would've almost mistaken it as such if they were underwater.

"Hm..." A vague sound of acknowledgement before he finally took his eyes off the tree, scanning the people that had come to gather and hang their ornaments up instead. "We used to have holidays. None quite like this, but it doesn't matter much anymore." Perpetual war had a tendency to do that.

He did remember certain 'holidays' from when he was just a hatchling, though. Or rather, he remembered holidays from when his ancestors were just hatchlings. He was born three generations into the war, but his species had a certain degree of genetic memory that passed down.

Ah, fond memories.

"Do you celebrate this?"

Ahhh, christmas. A time for family. Family he didn't ever speak to, and hadn't for years. He probably never would again, especially now that he wasn't in Europe. A part of him still pined for family, but the bigger part of him told him that he was being silly and stupidly sentimental. He didn't need them, and he was better off alone than dealing with the toxic mess that had been his family.

"I used to. It was part of my culture, but it has a strong focus on family. Single people don't celebrate it as much because of that." And he meant single as in alone, not as in not dating, and he was hoping Ulrich was going to get that without jabbing him in the proverbial ribs. "You still see a lot of decorations around, even if you don't celebrate. The usual stuff will be a family get together on christmas eve, and then on christmas you'll exchange presents in the morning, and normally another dinner together in the afternoon." Lunch was unknown territory, as far as he was concerned.
