He would he here.

The shape, the belly of the ship, loomed just above, unaware of the dozens of peering eyes below. If one stood at the rail and looked very, very closely into the water, you could almost make out a vaguely twinkling light... Or maybe it was just the moonlight playing tricks on the waves.

Multiple shapes moved deep underneath the waves; there was more than one creature down there, but they were all quite small compared to the one that sat directly underneath the ship. Its many heads followed the slow, slothlike movements, waiting for its chance to bark orders. It was but a small mission, nothing that couldn't be accomplished quickly and efficiently.

If there was no cooperation, it was easy to erase it all and start over.

One of the many heads suddenly twitched towards the hull of the boat where a shadow appeared. Murky waters would make it difficult for regular eyes to see, but this was his element. The heads rose further, making out a human male with red hair.

Good enough.

He didn't like the sea. Anyone who knew him knew that, and no one who knew him could blame him either. Even for those who got the sanitized version could easily understand why. He'd lost his arm on the ocean. He's nearly lost his life, and his teammates. Of course, the fact that he'd seen the thing that lived in the ocean.... well, most people didn't know that. That was something he'd kept hidden, burying the secret along with the rest of his team.

No one had to know. No one could know, because then they'd assume he'd gone mad. Anyone would. If someone else told him they'd had a boat destroyed by an unstoppable monster, he'd think they were crazy too.

He hated boats, and he hated the ocean. He hated everything, but there was very little option. It made him even antsier than usual, and he found he couldn't sleep. It wasn't a very big boat - more of a ferry than anything, meant to carry people on the long journey to Corsica. Some people dozed in their cars. Some had tiny rooms. Nicolas had what amounted to a broom closet.

Standing on the edge of the boat was a bad idea, but he did it anyway. There was a high guardrail, but he felt like screaming just looking out at the water.

He hadn't really looked at the sea in years.

Slowly, the many heads approached the surface to peer closer. They were spiny things, with jagged scales that looked more like large flint daggers than anything else. His jaws were slightly parted, letting the glowing light of his mouth shine through a shade. Closer to the surface, his many eyes glimmered faintly, almost like purple-blue stars reflecting into the water.

Yes, this was very likely the man. Humans looked very similar to him and could easily be mistaken for each other considering he often didn't see them for long stretches of time. The one he was looking for had pale skin and red hair, and there were lines going through his face. Scars, because if they weren't then they were some very unfortunate tattoos.

This human had been brave, so he would be rewarded.

One head turned and there was a deep rumble that vibrated through the water. Ulrich was, unfortunately, too large to grab the man himself. If he attempted it, he'd probably rasp all his skin off. Instead, one of his royal guard stepped forward; the octopus-like creature reached for the surface, one of his tentacles breaching the water and immediately lashing out without pause.

The suckers wrapped firmly around the man's waist and tugged, dragging him downwards into the dark, murky depths. A puny human would be no match.

Nicolas did not like the ocean, and when there was a noise - something strange and alarming - he could only stand there. Had he even heard it? The nature of the boat meant there was nowhere he could go. That was what made it truly terrible - because if the thing came for him, there was absolutely nothing he could do. If a man tried to kill him, he could defend himself. Even without a gun, he could fight back. He knew how. But nothing could defend him from a monster.

He didn't even get to fully finish the train of thought, and then something had grabbed him, hauling him over the side. He very nearly brained himself on the side of the boat on the way down, hitting the water with a slap that literally knocked the breath out of him. He twisted, forcing himself above water for only a moment, long enough to grab a breath, before he was dragged back down.

It was hard to do anything but panic and try and hold his breath as he was dragged into the dark water, eyes squeezed tightly shut as his lungs screamed.

Success. Well, partially. The target had been obtained, at least. His guard dragged the man down into the water, though not too far. It would be useless to have gathered intelligence for this long, only to have the squishy human crushed by water pressure.

The octopus creature held the human out to him and Ulrich's many heads seemed to strain forward, materializing from the murky deep to surround the man and jostle for a place to see up close. His eyes glowed fiercely now that he was up close and personal, illuminating the space around the human as if he were in the spotlight.

Yes. This was the one.

They needed to hurry. Humans needed air, and they needed to get far enough away from the ship to let him have that. They were off, swimming away from the boat with the human in tow. One of his many heads kept the redhead from being ripped apart by the currents, and they were far enough to be nothing but a glimmer in the distance in no time.

Only then did he allow his guard to raise the human above the water, just enough so he could breathe.

Humans did, in fact, need air. No amount of good intentions would replace the fact that to function he needed air in his lungs, and while Nicolas considered himself to have a decent amount of stamina, he was only human.

Underwater, he could see the glow. He knew things were moving, that he was being held up by a rag doll. But he kept telling himself that he was dreaming, that it was all a nightmare. And even when he was jerked, his eyes flashing open for only a moment, he told himself it wasn't the same thing. He told himself it was something else. That he wasn't there. That it was anything else.

If he wanted to stay sane, to cling to that last rapidly diminishing bit of oxygen, he needed to keep telling himself that. He had to keep telling himself that he wasn't facing down another one of those monsters. That one hadn't come out just to snatch him. There was no way it was a current, not with the tight feeling around his waist, and the sudden jerking motion as they took off to god knows where. He had to keep telling himself that, even as his vision started to go even blacker than it already was, his lungs screaming for air.

The boat was nowhere in sight, and only then did another low rumble vibrate through the water. The tendril that had wrapped itself tight around the man's waist suddenly lifted him upwards so that his head could be held up above the water to his shoulders.

Ulrich himself didn't rise, but the many heads gathered around the human just inches beneath the surface, all of them jostling for a place. Dozens of eyes flowed like truck tire sized fireflies, flitting back and forth with the occasional zig-zag of light appearing as his many mouths opened and shut. It was like being surrounded by flashlights going on and off all at once.

If nothing else, the man looked like he was swimming in a pit full of very, very large snakes.

At last, one of the heads breached the water.

It sat on the surface almost as if decapitated, glowing eyes trained on the man right at his nose. This was the correct man. He remembered the incident, though it was a little hazy considering at the time it was of no real importance. Destroying pirate ships became fairly routine for him, but that time around he'd accidentally crushed a supposed 'good' boat in the process.

This one had been incredibly brave, and he didn't even know his name. No matter, he'd work for him. If he didn't agree no matter what sort of persuasion he used... Well, he'd try and find some sort of boat to toss him back onto.

It was like all his nightmares had come true all at once. No, that wasn't even quite right. His nightmares were more tame than this. His nightmares were just seeing the thing again. His nightmares were going into the ocean at all.

He broke the surface with a desperate gasp, sucking in air to fill his pained lungs. Every breath was deep and desperate, trying to make up for the oxygen he'd lost. He'd almost died, almost given in and sucked water rather than air, and even in combat he'd never had so much adrenaline pumping.

Opening his eyes made things worse, not better. He was dangled near the surface, high enough to breath but with nothing he could do but hang there (or attempt to tread water). Even worse, he was surrounded by the... by the heads, if you could even call it that. The thing had literally surrounded him, and now it was doing exactly what it had done after it had destroyed their boat: It was watching.

If he hadn't peed just before coming on the deck, he might very well have peed then and there. His heart was not so much hammering in his chest as it was threatening to beat through his ribs and escape to safety.

But there was nowhere to go. In the ocean, even if the thing just let him go he'd drown before he found anything. He would die out there, and the only question was why. Why? Why had it come for him? Why had it hunted him down? Why hadn't it at least eaten him?

There was a flare of real anger that managed to punch through the fear, however temporarily.

"If you're going to eat me, just fucking do it!" He shouted, even if he couldn't tell for sure if he'd even be able to understand.

Yes, that was better, wasn't it? Just a few nips of air and the human would be as good as new. It was almost childish, and it seemed odd to him because he could breathe both air and filter oxygen from the water. Ah, the advantages of being a Panthalassian.

He allowed the human to regain his bearings. It must have been quite disorienting, and he needed to tell his guard to be a little more careful with humans. They were delicate, and he had been a bit violent with his pulling him down from the boat.

The human's expression suddenly changed, and there was an outburst out of character for fear. Anger was what it was. A pure, unadulterated and momentary rage. Good, good, he needed someone like this man.

The head resting on top of the water, as well as a few of them swimming just underneath his feet, seemed to laugh. The rumble caused the surface of the water to ripple violently, but that gradually died down as the head sitting in front of him seemed to grin.

The light leaked out between the beast's teeth.

"And what use could you be, if I ate you?" Came a demonic rumble of a voice. He was speaking quite softly, though he could imagine that it would be loud regardless to a small human.

Fuck, it was laughing. That was what it was doing, wasn't it? It was so wrong, like suddenly seeing an animal laugh. He supposed it was an animal, in a way - more animal than human anyway. It was something, anyway. He didn't really want to know what it was. He wanted it gone, out of his life. He wanted to have never seen it at all.

And then it talked. Talking was a thousand times worse then laughing, and he jerked backwards more out of instinct than anything. It was loud, but it was also so wrong. So clearly not a human talking. So clearly something else.

He felt the sudden desire to puke, and he only just pushed it down.

"Then just - just say what you want, fuck!" He felt the urge to swear, but he held his tongue. Nearly literally - he was a bit worried he was going to bite his tongue on the next wave if he flapped his gums too much.
