If life had been fair, Anastasia would have been done school already. She'd already graduated when the fact that she was not-quite-human had come out, and Starlight Academy had worked on more European schooling standards. So it was back to school, even if the school didn't seem entirely clear on how she would graduate. Would she graduate if she failed everything? She already had a highschool degree. It wasn't as if they could revoke a degree she'd already received, the only question is if the college would accept it.

The compromise had been a year of schooling, primarily to make sure her English was up to par, although the lovely secondary side effect was helping her get used to the less ordinary residents of the islands.

There were a lot. She wasn't used to them at all, but aside from one point where she'd nearly fallen over in fright and alarm, she at least hadn't reacting too terribly. Some of them were just... well, she'd expected people like her, people who looked human but maybe weren't quite, and instead she'd found a seemingly endless supply of people who would never pass as human. Shark people and tree people and who knew what else. Some were so strange she couldn't even put words to them.

So it was a relief when she'd come into Home Ec and found a human being was doing the teaching. A short woman who sort of reminded her a bit more of a mythical dwarf, but a human none the less. She was quiet for the majority of the class, aware she was a newcomer and no doubt out of place, but she wasn't willing to let it stay that way long.

So when the class wrapped up and people started to file out for lunch, Anastasia took the initiative, adjusting her bun, cleaning up her station, and then heading up to the front of the classroom.

"Miss Powell? I just wanted to introduce myself, since I'm new to the class. My name is Anastasia Mikhailovna Usenko." Full name, which was how it was done in Russia. It was more a habit than anything, because she knew most people didn't use patronymics at all. Her accent was still thick, although not quite choking, and she was mindful and doing her best to make it more understandable.

"...and there you have it!" The small witch said as she pulled out a perfectly baked confection from the miniature oven stationed at the front of the classroom. Dyshelle slid the dish onto her counter, allowing all the students to see what their final result should look like. She prepared to launch into another lecture about the proper decorating methods, but the bell rang and the students filed out, some holding dishes they were proud of and others tossing their failures into the trash.

It brought a tear to her eye to see such effect thrown into the trash without a single care in the world. But still.

She waved her spoon at the trash can and it emptied itself with no further ado.

Now came her least favorite part of the day, cleaning up her classroom. Of course the teacher was no layabout, and set to it with no delay, but the room was clearly designed for the optimal usage of someone who was at least a foot and a half taller than herself.

A long exhale.

Still, she cleaned up as best she could.

"Miss Powell? I just wanted to introduce myself, since I'm new to the class. My name is Anastasia Yurievna Usenko."

"Anastasia Yurievna Usenko?" she repeated slowly. The Russian syllables were unfamiliar to her tongue, and she invariably mispronounced something, but the honest look on her face made it clear that that wasn't intentional. At least Anastasia was an easy enough name to pronounce. For now she would stick with that. "Pleased to meet you Anastasia, darling. My name is Dyshelle Powell. Please, call me Miss Shellie."

The witch hovered to sit on the clean lip of her desk, making it a lot easier to look the student in the eye. "What can I help you with, darling?"

She had mispronounced it, as people were apt to do. Anastasia was easy enough and common enough, but Mikhailovna was... well, it was hard for a Russian to said it, although perhaps not as hard as it would be if she ever had to actually say Miss Powell's first name. She'd heard it exactly once and she was hoping she was never going to have to embarrass herself trying to wrap her Russian accent around it.

Of course, the teacher's introduction actually neatly bypassed the entire issue in the blink of an eye. Miss Shellie was perfectly pronounceable, thankfully. Even to her.

She was not entirely used to all the... stuff. She didn't want to call it magic, even though that was very clearly what it was. She'd been raised in a nice normal household that had no place for superstitions, magic, or anything of the sort. It was all very jarring to see someone just float up to the edge of the desk. It helped that she looked like... well, like a normal human being, but Anastasia's brain kept screeching to a halt every time someone did something that they were so obviously not supposed to be able to do according to the rules of the universe.

"I was wondering if you'd like some help cleaning up. I know I have a lot to catch up on." That said, it did seem pretty standard for people to arrive in the middle of the school year on the island. "I don't have any actual experience with Home Ec, I have to admit." Nor was she entirely clear on what 'home ec' actually stood for. What was the 'ec'?

Miss Shellie, just like every other instructor in the school, was more than a little used to students coming and going in the middle of the semester. It seemed like there was a new face every day, a new person who just found out about their powers walking into these halls of learning and finding out that they weren’t alone. Dyshelle had to keep herself from getting misty-eyed--she couldn’t relate to that anyway. Both her parents had been overtly magical. She practiced magic on their pets when her parents weren’t paying attention.

She wasn’t proud of that though.

“I would love some help,” She said holding her trusty wooden spoon and turning it slowly in her fingers. “As you can see, this classroom was made to be used by someone taller than me. Someone more like your height. I can turn a mouse into a monster but high shelves? Those are the true villains.”

The tiny witch hopped off her desk and walked down the aisles of the classroom, dumping all their unwashed utensils in the sink. Really, was just putting the dirty dishes where they belonged so hard?

Shellie turned back to Anastasia. “Home Economics is very easy, darling.” She said. “Tell me about yourself. I’m always interested to hear about new places.”

If Anastasia had to name Home Ec, she probably would have named it something like 'Home Management'. That was what it seemed like. Cooking, cleaning, taking care of the house... things she'd like to say that she wasn't actually interested in, but things she would have to learn just the same. Just because she didn't want to tend to a house didn't mean she wouldn't have to. She was alone in the world, and unless she wanted to be one of those people who had take out every single night, she would have to learn to cook for herself.

The thought of finding a partner or roommate who might be interested in cooking didn't occur to her. Anastasia was nothing if not self sufficient.

"I am from Russia. I've lived near Novosibirsk and Moscow more recently. I did not know anything about the extranatural until recently." She of course meant supernatural, but some things did not translate over cleanly in her head just yet. She spoke English, but she spoke formal English, the kind taught by people who had little experience at actually speaking English to native speakers.

"My power is that I cannot die." Simple enough. Was it usual to introduce your power? She wasn't yet sure on the protocol surrounding it, but it seemed only fair. She obviously knew what Miss Powell's power was - she could use magic. The exact details hardly mattered. Magic was magic.
