Adder

Things finally seemed to be settling out. Adder still didn't have a consistent place to sleep, but didn't seem to draw too much attention if he bounced between a couple of different places, and he had a couple of places with decent odds of finding food. The city-smelling packages of food he kept finding helped.
Those packages still bothered him but he ate them anyway. Food was food and he felt no growing obligation to the person who left them. He was always careful to check them for contamination, for anything that might be part of a trap, but he ate them. He needed the energy, especially with winter rapidly approaching in this strange place.
A rich-person bonfire with unrestricted access and free food was kind of perfect, but like that halloween party he'd tried it was just... too busy. So he hung on the outer edge, in the cold he didn't want, and tried to find some benefit to coming. He'd spent plenty of energy getting here. He wanted to at least get that investment of resources back.
There also seemed to be wolves present. Wolves were. Hm. Interesting, to Adder. They were high-risk, but also familiar in a way that even feral dogs and cats couldn't touch. And the wolf he could smell also seemed to be an individual person. Not an animal, a person.
When he drew closer, he also picked up the scent of food. Finally - but it was a puzzle. The food was clearly in the wolf's territory. Adder crept closer, ears upright and alert and his yellow eyes flicking from one person to the next.
Too many people, but crowds he could use. He probably couldn't outrun a wolf while carrying a deer carcass, however much he'd like to, but he had a knife. He could at least make off with a good chunk of muscle.
He crept closer.
