Name: Yun Blair Masamune
Age: Eighteen
Birthday: August 20
Gender: Male
Category: Student
Class: High School
Grade: (will be entering in fall) Twelve
Appearance Description: A crossbreed shapeshifter prevented from freely accessing all his forms by an extremely annoying spell, Yun is normally restricted to sulking around in his feline form. It really isn't impressive, since he looks very much like a regular-sized black house cat with copper eyes. With a burning tail. In all his forms, he possesses a slender tail that fades to blue-white fire for the final third of its length, and occasionally spits copper sparks from it when angry, uncomfortable, or otherwise out of sorts.
In addition to his forcibly default cat shape, Yun has two other native forms: a human one that he hasn't been able to use since he was a child, and a dragon one that he lost access to a few years later. The dragon form is, as result, far more familiar, and resembles a six-limbed serpent with faint feline and canine tones, tight-fitting smooth-edged scales, and very little decoration.
Should he ever achieve it again, Yun's human form may surprise a lot of people, including himself. His human form might collect all of his scars, hiding them from his feline and draconic bodies, but even so it remains sleekly attractive, a slender young man with black hair just un-straight enough to twirl at the edges, copper eyes as bright as his cat-eyes, and a seeming gentleness that is endlessly at odds with his personality. And a tail, for what would Yun be without an easy source of accidental arson and a showy manifestation of his state of mind?
Personality Description: Angry, impatient, and suspicious, Yun has a very solid reason to distrust others (especially others with magic) and he has no intention of setting it down. He isn't asocial but resents being drawn to people, both naturally and through the Familiar spell that so wants him to be chained to someone else. He does, or at least did, like people, and would happily be quite social if it weren't for the whole make-himself-a-slave thing. Freedom is extremely important to him, and he rejects most forms of responsibility and obligation.
Between being unable to shift out of his smallest, least threatening form and basically radiating Issues, Yun has been a target of bullies for quite a while. He responds to violence with violence, and is not above threatening people with his dragon form (which is at least large horse-sized) until they realize he can't shift. Then he's kind of stuck trying to set them on fire.
When not actively being bullied, Yun enjoys surfing the internet (no, not looking for cat videos), trolling people on web forums and news articles, and cleaning. Being a cat, he might not make much mess, but a regular sized dorm still has a lot of upkeep - especially when you're the size of a cat. He likes ceviche more than sushi, and will show up at his neighbours' doors if he suspects they have pizza. And don't you dare wiggle strings or laser pointers at him. See the tail? He is not a freaking cat and he is mauling that string of his own free will and it has nothing to do with felinity.
Give him a chance and he is also capable of being a decent cook, but there are a lot of things that are simply beyond his current physical capabilities. He can't even hold a pencil; he has to memorize everything in-class because he can't carry a laptop around with him.
Powers: Hybrid Shapeshifter
His father once traced his own heritage, and found shapeshifters from a variety of places. Most notable, especially for Yun, is the nekomata and aitvaras background, which provide Yun's three forms: nekomata are japanese cat-demons, and aitvaras are lithuanian rooster-dragon spirits. Normally, Yun would be able to move between these forms easily and without hesitation, and with less effort than walking across a room. However...
Familiarization
This is the same spell that bound Yun's father, and that is how Yun knows as much about it as he does. The spell binds the vast majority of Yun's abilities to whoever is contracted as Yun's handler or master, ideally forcing him to be a familiar to the mage who cast the spell. Without his handler's permission, Yun cannot change forms or use his healing magic, despite having had to train the latter from a vague affinity for magic. The intent was to coerce him into agreeing to a contract. In addition to restraining his magic, this spell also quietly urges him to be around people (the better to find a handler) and basically pokes him incessantly if he's alone for more than a few minutes.
Healing Magic
Yun had a chance to learn how to use a basic talent for general magic before having access to it snatched away from him. With permission, he is capable of a variety of healing spells, from healing cuts and broken bones to restoring energy and strengthening a failing heart. If he does not take appropriate preparations, some of the healed injury reflects back on him, damaging his human form. Injuries originally inflicted via magic are far more likely to have some degree of backlash, but overall backlash can be reduced or eliminated by drawing a protective working circle around himself and his patient. He can use his magic in any form, but is limited by his Familiar status.
Biography: Yun never met his mother, and was raised by his father. Unfortunately for him, his father was trapped in the magical employ of a powerful mage who specialized in Familiar Contracts and matchmaking lesser mages and magic-workers of all kinds with the perfect familiar for their needs - less so the needs of the familiar in question. When his primary familiar's offspring began to show signs of strong shape-shifting ability, he grew intrigued. When that kid began studying healing magic under his father's proud suggestion, he decided to groom Yun as a high-quality familiar, whether for his own use or for sale.
The grooming began with a preliminary familiarization spell that bound him to his primary feline form, and quickly followed with the introduction of a tutor in the healing arts. This tutor was unaware of Yun's apparent future serving others and occasionally taught him other things, like how some parts of the world worked, and queried him about his career plans. As the years passed, Yun forgot about how much easier it had been to do many things as a dragon (since that form at least had thumbs, and was large enough to move things alone).
When he was seventeen, his father died. He had been supporting his handler in a major working, but the spell backfired. Yun's father took the force to spare his handler. His handler's response was to have the corpse thrown out with the trash and to stomp downstairs to find Yun. He dragged him from a session with his healing tutor, leaving a child with broken limbs and a punctured limb lying dying on a table, and forced the full Familiar spell on him.
Yun fought back, and succeeded in breaking the mage's grip (and the skin of his face, thanks to a full set of claws), but the spell had taken hold. The quiet compulsion to find a handler settled in as he tore back to his tutor, but what really sealed his history there as history was the sudden inability to use his magic. His tutor took him into her own home for a time, and they tried to work out exactly what it was that had happened, but they couldn't find a way to break the spell. If he accepted a handler, if he made himself a slave to someone else's whims, he could have his magic back. All of his magic.
His tutor agreed wholeheartedly with his disinterest, and sent him to Manta Carlos to perhaps find someone who could cancel out the magic. In the meantime, he could at least round out his education, for there was a school there that had undoubtedly taught far stranger students than a shapeshifter locked in cat form.
Additional Information: yes, I am looking for drama regarding attempts to make him someone's familiar. PLOT WITH MEH
