Name: Shikkonuka Ywarakhi Kaneonus
Pronunciation: shee-KOHN-uh-ka EE-wa-rahk-hee kah-NEE-oh-nuhs
Age: 21
Birthday: Sept 1
Gender: Male
Species: Spiderling
Category: Citizen
Appearance Description: A first impression of Shikkonuka, casually known as Shikk, really depends on what part of him is seen first. His body? Horrifying nightmares forever of giant, neon orange spiders that almost glow yellow-gold in strong light. Giant as in his spider-back tops out at three feet high at rest, and given that his legs are kind of... long... if he lifts himself up to his maximum, non-rearing height, his spider parts can be right in the face of someone six feet tall. His spider parts are lightly furred, silky smooth when calm and thorny and painful when stressed.
Now, if it's his human parts someone notices first, that first impression is going to be completely different. Rising out of what should be the spider head, his hips and thighs smoothly folding into powerful pedipalps, is the upper body of a slim, soft bodied human. His human skin has a faint orange tint, just enough to match his spider body and remind people that they are indeed one and the same being, and is marked by gold dark enough to almost be black: a series of diamonds across his spine, small and disconnected in the small of his back but broad and fused from the shoulder blades up, with the uppermost two diamonds curving around to be visible on his throat and shoulders; a diamond patch on his chin, just brushing his lower lip; diamonds across the joint of each jaw; and a jagged patch across his forehead that is defined by two triangles between his eyes and two curving fang-like marks below his eyes. Well, his largest eyes.
Hey, Shikk is a spiderling. He has a lot of eyes. Eight, to be specific. His face is quite human, yes, but he has smaller eyes at each temple, and then a patch of four eyes in the middle of his forehead. These six smaller eyes are dark orange, like the irises of his largest eyes, and have black sclera - also like his largest eyes. Unlike his large eyes, his smaller eyes have no eyelashes or eyebrows. His large eyes, though... now do they ever have eyelashes. Long, soft, feathery, and easily his most complimented physical feature, his eyelashes draw almost as much attention as his spider body. Like his hair, they are a vibrant red-orange, glimmering faintly silver especially when wet, and have a particular ability to catch and bead moisture. He could pass that off as a self-defence mechanism; his six smaller eyes are just as capable of tears as his large eyes, and he'd blind himself pretty quick without spectacular eyelashes.
He could, but of course he doesn't. He's Shikk. He has super sensitive skin, especially around his neck, but he doesn't want people to see the inhuman markings there (or anywhere else) so he's growing his hair out to cover that as well as his extra eyes and the markings on his face, even if it means he can't see where he's going or who's nearby or who's looking at him. He almost exclusively wears wide-necked sweatshirts and sweaters of the softest material, or loose jackets he's knitted from his own silk. Unfortunately, even his own silk can irritate his skin, especially when he's stressed. Red angry marks on his skin are a sure sign of chronic stress, and when he's particularly out of sorts even the slightest touch will leave a welt.
He also doesn't really look his age at all. He is super babyfaced and passes for maybe sixteen. He gets carded going into bars to perform. It's super awkward.
Personality Description: Shy, nervous, and all too aware how easily scary he can be, Shikkonuka hides his spider self as much as he can at all times to try to moderate his impact on strangers. He keeps his hair long so that it can hide his extra eyes and shroud the markings on his face, and is trying to grow it longer so that it can cover his neck without the irritation of clothing. He performs lying down, his legs all tucked in tightly and his body usually draped in fabric, and avoids going out and about during the daylight as much as possible. He will be the focus of attention for his music, but only when outfitted to not terrify his audience. His music is heart-wrenching loss and sorrow and desperate sweetness, not nightmares and things that go crunch in the night.
He doesn't need to fake gentle vulnerability for his music. It's just him. Shikk is a horror out of the nightmares of so many people - and he's one hundred percent harmless and sweet and insecure and childish and weak and soft-hearted and - well. He's Shikk.
Shikk mostly accepts that people think his music is good, but is pretty sure they'll only like his covers (mostly of Ed Sheeran songs) and is kind of petrified of even telling anyone that he's started writing his own stuff. He has essentially no self-confidence, and is most certain of his ability to terrify anyone he meets - which, really, isn't spectacular. Yes, he's part giant spider, but really. How does anyone grow up in a community of magical beings and not clue in that it's okay to not look human? Shikk, apparently. He has been told that he's fine so many times that even a penny for each repetition would make him richer than his music has (which isn't really rich, but is starting to pay the bills).
When performing, Shikkonuka is pretty good at getting into the zone and blocking out everything else. For him, there is nothing but the music and the feel of his voice in his chest and face. The rest of the time.... he is hyperaware and paranoid and nervous and jittery and shy and always worried about what people see and think and fear. He is far too honest for his own good, though he can keep secrets when sufficiently afraid of the reactions to those secrets, and defers to others even when they're far less experienced or knowledgeable than he is. Which is basically never, but still.
He also once heard that animal spiders frequently eat each other during or after they have sex, and is insanely terrified of being eaten. Even if he's the spider. He has issues with being eaten. Even the slightest insinuation of him getting consumed in some way will trigger between one and three of the following reactions: one, extensive crying; two, screaming; three, running away as fast as his running-class spider legs can carry him. Which is, well, really fast. And not limited to horizontal surfaces.
Powers: Spiderling Physiology
Shikkonuka, being partially spider in the usual way of magical hybrid-class species, has rather different physical abilities than a human. He is extremely stable on eight legs, and can stand easily on as few as four legs as long as they aren't on the same side. He can run at speeds of up to fifty kilometres per hour for up to... well, like thirty seconds with his current fitness level. He is not a fit spider. He's not fat or anything, just... soft and largely inactive. He can climb/run on basically any surface as long as he isn't leaning upside down, and can get a grip on all but the smoothest of surfaces.
He's also cold-blooded, and produces very little body heat. However, because his skin is so sensitive, he can't just wear more clothing... plus spider bodies are hard to clothe. All he can really do is curl up on himself and hide under a giant mound of blankets with the heat jacked up.
When it comes to senses, Shikkonuka has excellent vision and spectacular depth perception. When his hair isn't covering his eyes. Which is most of the time. Also when he isn't staring at the ground. Or bawling his eyes out. Which is also most of the time. His sense of smell isn't as good as his sense of taste, which is definitely above average, and his hearing is precise within a specific but has difficulty with high and low pitched sounds. His oversensitive skin is also a product of adapted sensory perception, but maladapted in his case. He can feel basically everything that touches his skin, no matter how light or gentle, to such a degree that a friendly pat on the shoulder is as abrupt and noticeable as a punch. It isn't necessarily painful, but it interacts with his immune system when he's stressed (which is... frequently) to produce redness and swelling and irritation.
Finally, given that he's part spider, it shouldn't be surprising that he can produce spider silk. He can't make a ton, being a running spider rather than a web-weaver, but he does make it. It's almost exclusively non-sticky, and he usually knits with it. It's easier on his skin than most fabrics, though still not perfect, and also makes for awesome animal pillows. His bed is covered in random animals, all in the eerie silver-white of raw spider silk.
Biography: Shikkonuka didn't grow up on Manta Carlos, but from a smaller magical community tucked in the Rocky Mountains on North America. Whether it lay on the Canadian or American side has been uncertain for most for a long time, and the ultra-shy spiderling who grew up surrounded by accepting non-humans and still felt ashamed of his body definitely never got around to asking. He sang in quiet moments through most of his childhood, and was gently encouraged to do it more and more by his parents and teachers. He started singing in public in high school, and after graduating slowly moved into performing for money.
He built a bit of a fan base, but couldn't progress far in that small community. He had no intention of leaving, but his family and sort-of-friends wanted him to keep going - so they got him a small contract in a much larger community, Manta Carlos. And then dragged him to a teleport with a suitcase (under a sleepwalking spell after the initial, honest attempt failed miserably). And left him in the city.
You know, with a full support network, and people making sure he ate and had clean clothes and made it to his appointments on time, especially until he got all of his feet back under him. He proved surprisingly adaptable, taking on the new location well - if not the people, never the people, eep please let him go hide somewhere before he gave them all nightmares - and has just started singing again, mostly in bars on quieter nights.
Additional Information: He knits. And will provide people he likes with little silky stuffy animals made from his own silk. They're super cute. And he will be super awkward and shy about it.
