Name: Charlie "Char" Tempest
Age: 20
Birthday: October 1
Gender: Variable and undefined; currently physically female [equal acceptance of male and female pronouns and uses them interchangeably for himself, unfamiliar with neopronouns ]
Race: Dragon; physically human via magic
Category: Student
Class: College
Grade: Second Year
College Major: Undeclared/General Science
Appearance Description: Char has always trended towards the androgynous, and honestly she'd go right solid into masculine clothing if he knew it was an option, much as she might well stick with a single-gender pronoun if he knew it was an option. Mostly, though, she's a casual sporty tomboy with dark brown hair that does that kind of squiggly-tendril thing all the time and never seems to get long enough to tie up before he hacks it back to a more comfortable length. Her eyes are a similar shade, with just a hint of silver and gold when the light catches them at an odd angle; once in a while, it almost seems as if he has slitted pupils as well. Her sight is not spectacular (due to his enchantment, as it happens) and he has to wear glasses in class if she is more than halfway back in a mid-sized room.
Charlie's by far most comfortable in sporty clothing, especially loose sweat pants paired with beat up jerseys with team names she can no longer decipher. It isn't about the teams, after all; it's about the game, the rush, the drive, the flight. It would not be advisable to let Char fly an airplane without extreme caution and supervision. He wears toe shoes almost exclusively, including indoors, and has very dextrous toes. Her entire body is lean, tanned, and toned; it's his main tool for entertainment, and she keeps it fit. Otherwise, he's a bit dorky (especially when she's wearing his glasses), is dotted with freckles from face to belly, and has a face just round enough to smush her cheeks when amused. He's also an unspectacular 5'4" and shoes absolutely no signs of growing further... at least until dragonblood wins out.
Char has a small tattoo of a dragon caught inside a tear drop below his left collarbone, and the only piercings she will ever wear in his ears reference dragons in one subtle (or blunt) way or another.
Personality Description: Char has been through a lot of shit. Very little has gone right in his life, but she's actually pretty okay with that. He's had ups and downs. She definitely had a solid period of depression.
Sometimes all you need is a bit of time to see things more clearly. Char recognizes that things aren't the way he wants them to be, and somewhere along the line she decided that not everything has to be the way he wants - but there are some things she can change. If he can change those things, then she will. Around those changes, he honestly tries to be happy, and mostly she succeeds. He has hobbies and enjoyable time-wasters. She's had friends, and lost friends, and gained more. Losing friends doesn't break his heart, and she recovers from the ache of drifting apart with balanced grace.
All of his contentedness is contingent upon the assumption that there are critical factors which she cannot change, however. He cannot, for example, change her biologically female human form - or can he? Not at will, certainly, and the world she is familiar with does not have the magic required to show him that her drive to fly is instinct rather than imagination.
All drama in due course, of course. For now, Char enjoys sports that involve running, messing around at eye-watering heights, and spinning things on fire while balancing on tightropes. Not high tightropes, just a bit off the ground to liven things up. He doesn't do it for fame or admiration or even attention, simply because it makes her feel good. He's found that if she wants to be content in the world, he has to do things that make her feel good.
Char's instincts are very much draconic rather than human, though he was entirely raised to be human and believes herself to be such, and as such can come across as a bit odd when simply reacting or experiencing. He has a tendency to flare her nostrils with an odd thickening in his throat, or shift the muscles of her back in a way that implies more than what is there.
Powers: Full-Blooded Anti-Magic Dragon
The shell does not always describe reality. Char's reality, though he doesn't know it, is that she hasn't a single drop of human blood - it is dragon blood in his veins, both literally and genetically. She was enchanted to humanity while still in the shell, and given over to the human world for his own survival. She does, however, retain his full instincts under the veneer of human socialization.
While enchanted, Char heals slightly faster than an average human but not enough to draw significant attention. Her skin is durable, but only enough to at most draw a comment on his toughness. She's a little ectothermic and does best in warm environments, but once again doesn't stand out.
He does very much stand out to anyone who has any degree of sensitivity to auras. She straight-up reeks of dragon, and more skilled psychics and mages may be able to detect the compressed dragon within the human skin. He is also open to magical and telepathic communication with draconic folk, though she cannot open such channels on her own and possesses only a rudimentary understanding of the language from his years in-shell.
The spell that binds Char to a human form is shaped of dragon magic, and is carefully woven with negation magic to suppress Char's natural abilities. It cannot last forever and wears thinner every day, constantly increasing the odds of a potentially deadly explosion. The suppressed physical growth of her dragon body is the greatest strain on the enchantment, and that strain has just begun to weaken the magic enough for the shift back to dragon to gradually begin. In time, his bones will begin to shift and cause excruciating pain if the spell remains intact - and the more damaged the spell is, the harder it will be to remove safely.
Unenchanted, Char is a small, sleek eight-limbed dragon with smooth-fitting scales more mirror than substance. Unlike many dragons, even among those with wings, Char has two pairs: a powerful primary set nestled between and behind her shoulders and a supremely flexible smaller set anchored directly into his hips. That second pair provides a great deal of stability and agility, and are powerful enough to balance the front wings and allow Char to hover... with practice. Her tail is lean and finned, and tipped with with a scorpion-like barb. That barb is connected to a poison sac that bears similar properties to his magic, only concentrated.
Char is a dragon of anti-magic, capable of both reflecting and negating the powers of others. Her aura deadens free-floating magic and spells that are not under constant maintenance - a critical reason his magic has to be fully suppressed for the enchantment to be effective - and she can also cancel out both active and passive magic if his concentration and knowledge of that magic is equal to or greater than the power of that magic. The poison in her tail is capable of suppressing magic that does not sustain life in an individual for several hours when injected, and will suppress most magic for about ten minutes if splattered on the skin in sufficient quantities. Releasing the poison reduces his ability to negate magic in other ways, and she is strongest when his poison-sac is full - but leaving it full for too long can cause damage to the sac and associated tissues.
Char is immune to her own poison under normal conditions but is vulnerable to it if his magic is being negated by an outside force. She can also negate negations if (and only if) he begins attempting to negate it before it takes effect on him, and is not drastically stronger. As a dragon, Char has an immense potential lifespan but can be killed by illness or injury. Her scales are effectively fireproof but not immune to substances such as lava. He can breathe fire, but only in small quantities as she is not a fire dragon. Optimal flame production requires a diet high in fats and minerals. He is capable of shifting between human and dragon forms at will, and of modifying her human form, but habit is difficult to break.
Biography: Charlie Tempest, the only living child of a family of dragons who chose the wrong side of the law, knows nothing of his heritage... or that there might actually still be people out looking for the dragons who backed some annoying, ill-intentioned and ill-planned group trying to conquer the world.
What she does know is what it's like to grow up human and not feel comfortable in your skin. Char grew up in a smallish city in the middle of nowhere-in-particular, not even spectacular enough to be in nowhere. There was a lot of drinking and a lot of holes in general knowledge, and for the most part he just learned to seem okay. She really wasn't. Literally everything was wrong. He was adopted by a couple who divorced when she was five, and continued to listen to their screaming matches whenever they traded custody of him until she turned twelve and his adoptive father died. Then her adoptive mother at least stopped screaming.
Char withdrew into himself and basically shut down right up until she finished high school, throwing his restlessness into athletics and earning herself a couple of small scholarships. It was enough to get out of town. He only went to the next town over, to a smallish university-college with a soccer team that was willing to take her. He played for a while, and really blossomed in the new environment. In some ways, at least, she found himself.
And then one of her teammates spontaneously burst into flame during practice, and Char came out of it less burnt than anyone other than the usually quiet girl, despite having leapt into the accidental pile-up and smothered the flames with his towel. It turned out that someone had been investigating her teammate already, and the slight oddity was enough for some attention to fall on Char. One whiff of the aura he was still unaware of and a letter appeared, inviting her to a "full scholarship" at a "well-respected school" somewhere in the "tropics."
He accepted before she had the chance to find out that it wasn't an offer so much as a notice of intent. Starlight Academy, here he came!
