Name : Seneca Yates
Age : 31
Birthday : April 11th
Gender : Male
Nationality : British Thai
Category : Staff
Appearance Description : Seneca stands at five feet four inches tall and appears to be somewhat scrawny. In actuality, though, he's pretty strong and could probably throw around full grown men if he wants to. He just would really prefer not to. He has medium length rosy brown hair and dark brown eyes. His skin is quite pale, partially due to his reclusiveness but also because it seems like he skips tanning and goes straight to burning in the sunlight. He normally has an expression of faint worry.
He dresses like some old fashioned librarian.
Personality Description :Seneca believes in the power of friendship. Seneca is mostly a cynic and quick to assume that the worst is about to happen. He always tries to take the safest or most logical course of action, which isn't always the best for him because he tends to put others before himself. Though he is a loner, he is easily won over by people and quickly becomes loyal to those who he considers to be his friends. Though being around large groups of people makes him feel uneasy, he does try his best to be polite.
Respecting other people is actually something that Seneca believes deeply in. It's for that reason that, instead of being a doctor like he could have been, he decided to be a mortician instead. Despite his profession, seeing dead things bothers him greatly because it means nobody took the time to pay proper dues.
Seneca is also highly religious, probably because his parents are missionaries. He will point out, however, that he is not a missionary and therefore tries not to make people uncomfortable by that avenue. Because of his faith, however, he generally believes that everything will turn out decently. Meaning that if death is the worst thing that could possibly happen, that's pretty good odds, actually.
Power : Things That Go Bump In The Night - Seneca has the ability to sense the presence of supernatural beings in his nearby vicinity. He is usually able to tell what kind of beings they are based on how they feel to him. For example, water spirits make him feel like somebody's just dumped water over him and demons smell like brimstone. Over the years, he has gotten good at detecting beings who are hidden but unless he actually tries looking for those, he won't sense them right off the bat. However, he's paranoid enough to be attempting that regularly.
Frequently, Seneca gets sensory overload from there being too many supernatural beings staying in the same area. Depending on what kinds of beings they are, as well, his reaction would range from feeling nauseous to simply passing out. At times, a singular being is enough to cause this as well, if it is powerful enough.
Technically, this ability can't be turned off but through practice, Seneca has learned to simply ignore what his powers do when in public and not go looking for trouble. The result is a somewhat muted response that makes it easier for him to socialize. If he really wants to. It's still very possible that he'll get sick if there's too many people around him.
Birth Place / Hometown : Chiang Mai, Thailand
Occupation : Mortician, Part-Time Mortuary Science Teacher
Father : Lucan Yates (67) Catholic Missionary / Schoolteacher
Mother : Livia Ward (65) Catholic Missionary / Schoolteacher
Biography : Seneca was born to two British missionaries who were preaching in Thailand. He lived a pretty normal, quiet life and spent much of his time studying indoors. From childhood, he had already decided that he would either end up in the medical field or in missionary work alongside his parents. However, he never felt like he was eloquent or good enough with people for the latter so he instead threw himself into the former.
By high school, his interests had shifted to funeral practices after witnessing a hit and run where it seemingly took forever for anybody to come and help. The incident disturbed him greatly, partially because he was fourteen years-old at the same and the only one present, and also because looking at that body sprawled in the middle of the road felt so disrespectful that he had to go and find some newspapers to drag over it.
From a young age, it was thought that Seneca was narcoleptic because he had a tendency to pass out multiple times a day. Bringing him to a doctor did absolutely nothing, so his parents decided to make a guess and bring in some friends who had graduated from Starlight Academy. All along, they had actually been half expecting him to develop some sort of ability because Lucan himself has a mild form of clairvoyance and is able to sense some nearby spirits. However, they were unprepared to find that Seneca's power was actually stronger than his father's and that was the reason why he was constantly fainting.
Though it took a few years, the fact that Seneca's power was discovered relatively early meant that people were able to figure out a way for him to mute its effects a little. As a result, Seneca was able to remain in Thailand and complete his education, receiving degrees in nursing and biology even though it wasn't quite what he wanted.
Because Chiang Mai University did not offer a major in mortuary science, Seneca debated attending elsewhere but held off for a few years due to reluctance to leaving his hometown. However, he eventually caved and asked his parents' friends one day if Manta Carlos offered the courses he wanted. Eventually, he ended up going back to college on the island and finally managed to get a mortuary science degree.
He currently works at Manta Carlos's morgue, although he does some work at the school sometimes.
Additional Information : Seneca enjoys reading Romantic Era poetry in his free time. He also has grapheme-color synthesia. Purely from experience, he has basic knowledge of how most anatomies work, as well as funeral practices across a broad spectrum.
