..........."Yeah," he admitted. What was the point in lying, really? It was a big party - and one where everyone was supposed to be in disguise. If this Yoka person wanted to try anything, she'd have to find him first - and get away with it in public.

While it would have been nice to come across someone with power over that brat, it was no skin off Yun's back that Yoka had no idea who he was talking about.

The skin came off, figuratively speaking, when she had the gall to ask if he was a ****ing familiar. His tail wasn't simply dripping sparks now, no. It was spraying them like a fire hose with a kid trying to hold onto it.

"No," he snarled. "I most definitely am not a familiar, and you can take any stupid ideas to that effect and walk off a cliff with them."

Being cursed with a familiarization spell sucked so bad.

Though his sparking tail might have caused some alarm, Yoka seemed unphased by it. Though she was youthful, she was far from a young fox.

"I see," Yoka said, in regards to his rather indignant reaction. He reminded her of a...how did the kids say it today? A Salty little fuckboy?

She smiled at him.

"That's a bit of an extreme reaction in response to someone who's just asking questions," Yoka sighed. "If I didn't know better, I'd say you are and that you are ashamed. None the less I am sorry to have asked. What are you, then, kitty cat?"

There were a lot of things that Yun really didn't like, but people smiling at him after he threatened them was pretty high on the list. The stream of sparks thickened, and his next words were very much a growl.

"I AM NOT. I am a person, a SHIFTER. Some idiot just thought it would a delightful prank to try to make me into a pet to sell, so now I can't shift." If it had taken energy to make the sparks coming out of his tail, he'd be working himself into a coma already. "This place was supposed to be able to get rid of it, but noooo no one wants to even touch it."

He was abruptly on his feet and turned away from Yoka, fully intending to just be on his way and go home, regardless of his incomplete errand.

Oh, this spitfire was so, so very delightful to Yoka

Yoka had a secret: She was afraid of growing bored. She was already five hundred, had another few centuries before godhood, and she was so very afraid that she wouldn't even appreciate the fine things by the time she reached there.

The fine things like, for example, seeing an indignant hussy little cat walking away with his tragic back story.

"Is it possible they don't want to touch it because they're afraid of getting bitten?" Yoka called after him.

She hesitated, and then Yoka asked, "Is it a curse or a spell?"

This had peaked her interest significantly.

"I know curses tend to get stronger over time," Yoka said. "And have very specific means of breaking them. I know that spells fluctuate in their strength and intensity, but can be difficult to override if the caster is stronger."

She was still crouched down as though she was expecting him to come back, but truthfully Yoka didn't know if he'd turn around.

"I know that there are some things that are stronger than both, too," she said. She didn't offer anything else, no other tidbit. She just...waited.

Damn it all, she talked like she knew something that might be useful. Stronger over time, though.

****. If that were true of the magic clinging to him, then he couldn't really be picky about who he worked with, and meander through life wasting time. As annoying as she was, sitting there like she ran the world and had him dancing on strings, he couldn't just leave. Not without knowing if he had a chance of fixing things.

****. He sat where he was and looked more decisively over his shoulder. **** **** **** **** ****. "Can you do more than talk?"

"I don't know," Yoka said. "Can you do more than spit and growl?"

She tilted her head and rested her chin on her arms, still on top of her knees. She was folded up against the chill October air like an origami crane.

"It seems like something is eating at you, Yun, and I don't think you're going to be able to fix it with the kind of attitude you're showing me now," she said.

Her amber eyes were sharp as she looked at his form and wondered what else he could shapeshift into. Yoka liked puzzles, she liked riddles, and she liked things that kept her occupied. Yun, she thought, might be just the sort of toy she was looking for.

He really wanted to spit and growl at her, especially for that comment. She was playing with him and he knew it. He wasn't an idiot. The question was, though, was she just playing with him? Was there an honest chance for usefulness or was it all a lure for entertainment?

"No **** it bothers me," he muttered, but with some effort he neither spat nor growled. His tail was less under his control, but the calmer he forced himself to seem the less it spluttered.

"I don't appreciate being treated like a pet," he grumbled, and finally actually turned around to face Yoka.

"And I don't appreciate like I have done anything else than ask you a question," Yoka told him. She was being honest about this, and since she had, the playful tone in her voice had disappeared....but only a little. It was hard for it to go away completely. It was just the kind of person she was.

"So if you stop hissing and spitting and growling, maybe we can have a talk about this, and see if there's a way we could help each other. If there's not?" Yoka shrugged. "Then you can go back to being upset, and I can go back to looking for my cat."
