This place was..... somewhere between freaking amazing and absolutely ludicrous. Char was getting it into his head that people were not in constant costume here, but it was going at about the same rate as the idea that yes, magic was real. And apparently she had some, somehow. He had thought she'd been over wanting to be special. Over wanting to escape.

He still needed a break from the school, though. Something about being there just made everything so... real. So overwhelming. Besides, she needed to run. Some things hadn't changed at all. So he had thrown on her running toe shoes instead of her casual toe shoes, shrugged on an old hoodie against the autumn chill, and took off jogging in shorts that still called him a student of the Mountain University-College.

The wind here felt different and yet the same. It still played with her hair, nibbled at his clothing. It taunted and teased and begged, but Char remained as groundbound as usual. She still dreamed of flying as he ran, though. Dreamed and dreamed and finally slowed for a break when she found himself in a rather beautiful park. Within a few deep breaths she was no longer showing any stress from the run - he ran a lot - and just spun around on the path, pleased with life.

If he was standing beside someone chatting with them, he could just tell they were a dragon. He could sense his own. He imagined that humans had a similar sense, only they were always surrounded by humans, so it didn't really help them at all.

So when he was walking through the park and felt another dragon, it wasn't unusual. What was unusual was that he was alone. He wasn't talking to anyone, and there was no one in his line of sight. Whatever he was feeling, it was practically screaming it's sense of dragonness. Either it was a dragon so staggeringly powerful that he could barely comprehend it, or something else was going on.

So he abandoned his petty errand, weaving through the park, guiding by the sense of his own kind as easily as someone might be guided by a scream. It was moving - and not farther away. No, it was moving towards him.

But the closer he got, the more he realized that was more coincidence. The other dragon was simply following the path, making no indication that it had noticed him at all. To say it was unusual was to understate the whole situation.

He only just caught sight of the runner, stopping in the center of the path and eyeing them. Young. Very young. A baby of some sort, although he had no idea why the feeling was so intense.

Eventually he was going to have to dig out her mp3 player again - not that normal people even used those anymore, but they were cheaper, tougher, and lighter than running with a phone - but for now, Char didn't need to block out the world to run and be happy.

....

Some old guy was staring at him. Char hesitated in her spin, shifting back to 'casual person, nothing odd going on here nope' pose and eyed him. Was he some sort of creep? Char had no way of measuring what was weird and what was normal here yet. He still didn't like being stared at... so she walked closer to the creepy old guy.

"Can I help you with something?"

Nothing so undignified and dramatic as that. But it was the same thing in effect - he was letting himself feel the aura, the sense of dragon that was leaking from the person in front of him.

"You do a very poor job of hiding your aura, you know. I sensed it from a half mile off." That was a slight exaggeration, but who was going to call him on it?

He shifted his weight, crossing his arms and looking down at the... girl? Boy? He genuinely couldn't tell, and after a moment, he decided it didn't matter. Dragons were not terribly sexually dimorphic to begin with. Telling a girl dragon from a boy dragon was a nearly impossible task, and things like that didn't matter to him at all.

Plus, the dragon in front of him was far too young to be a perspective mate.

"Is there a reason you're announcing your existence to everyone?" To attract other dragons maybe?

Char just blinked at the old guy. "Uh, aura?" she asked blankly. What the heck was an aura anyway? And whatever it was, was the old guy actually picking up on it or was he just a whacko?

Well, this was magic land - WAIT, now he remembered auras. They were part of the new-age stuff. Crystals and auras and tarot cards. Fortune-teller-at-the-fall-fair type stuff. That was all fake, right? Made-up quackery to get people to pay money?

..... This was magic land. Maybe it wasn't made-up here. Maybe it was as real as people setting themselves on fire, people with pointy ears and tails that moved like flesh, not like metal joints.

Still, Char didn't know how to respond to the old guy. (Wait, was he checking her out? Eeeuuugghhhhh he was not interested in a sugar daddy of any kind. or, uh, species, she had to try to keep that in mind too now. no sugar daddies period.)

"I, uh, wasn't aware I was?" he said in open confusion. What was the old creep talking about?

In fact, the very mention of doing anything at all seemed to be confusing them. Hudson let out a hmph, his usual smile faltering as he tipped his head, looking the girl (it was a girl, he had decided - and if not, he'd figure it out later) over once more.

"You have no idea? What are you then, species wise?" A simple enough question on the islands, where people were often anything but human. She was young enough to be a student at the university, which made posing his questions a lot easier. "What's the special thing about you that got you an invitation to the island in the first place?" A safe assumption, considering the vast majority of students arrived thanks to a letter.

Char leaned back a bit at the old creep's huff, more affronted than weirded out now. "I'm human, duh," he said. What else would she be? Seriously? The second question made a lot more sense, but he still gave a bit of a shrug.

"Latent powers. Someone or other said they'd come out pretty quick, apparently, but I'm a lot better at running than sitting through lectures." Even now, her attention was starting to slide away. Maybe he should just start jogging again; the old guy didn't look like he'd move very fast even if he wanted to follow her.

As blunt as Hudson was (because, as far as he was concerned, he had every right to be as blunt as he wanted), he at least had the tact to not blurt it out. Instead he made a little 'hmmm' noise, looking the girl over again.

"Well, I think it would be best if we sat down for a moment." He gestured to a bench not far away. "Since at the moment you're leaking an aura that makes your future powers extremely clear." At least to him and any other dragons. Probably gifted psychics would get a general idea, and anyone who actually read powers. It wasn't as if the average person would know, but it was probably better that he let them know before someone at the school blurted it out. Young dragons, in Hudson's opinion, tended to be a tad ignorant. Part of it was simply aging. A 17 year old human was almost an adult, a fifth of their life already past.

A 17 year old dragon was still a baby. They lacked the maturity a dragon gained by having lived a thousand years, and Hudson hoped to avoid the girl finding out that way.

Sit down? With the creepy old guy? Charlie would have just run off on him on the spot if it weren't for the rather blunt insinuation that he knew, somehow, what her latent powers were. Or something about them. Whatever they were, however he knew. He could sit through that, surely. Eh, maybe. He could always get up and leave. There were worse things than sitting with marginally weird old dudes.

She shrugged. "Eh, sure. Apparently aura-sensing isn't something on my plate anyway." He headed over to the bench with a little snort, faintly amused at the idea of being able to sense something as vague and ethereal - and generally considered hokey - as auras.

There was no easy way to break it to someone that they weren't human, but it was probably best to start with him, and his part in this.

"I am a dragon. While I appear human, my true form is that of a massive golden dragon." Simple, to the point. Hudson could be very blunt at times, even if he was putting in an effort to make himself sound... well, less blunt. "Dragons, like many magical creatures, can sense others of their kind - and you are a dragon." Clear, straight to the point. At least she was sitting down and at least vaguely aware that she was about to have something dropped on her, rather than it coming up in a random conversation.
