Char settled himself on the bench. Weird old guy seemed to be winding up for some grand prophecy or something - wasn't that how this setup worked in books and games?

Old guy was a dragon? Thought he was a dragon? Smile and nod. This might be magic land, but immediately accepting that some random old guy was a "massive golden dragon" was still well beyond Charlie's expectations. She was still working on "not costumes," after all.

So when he said that Char was a dragon...

Well. It didn't shock him because he didn't accept it as fact. She waited a few moments, to see if he was going to add anything else, and then shrugged. "You're sure you stopped the right random passerby?"

Yeah. Char didn't believe the old dude.

No one would accept it so easily, and he was sorely tempted to just breath fire and cut the shit. Unfortunately, dragons did exist that were not fireproof, which would end very poorly if she was one of those.

He let out an exasperated sigh. "I really am a dragon, and you really are a dragon, even if it doesn't seem like you are." He opted to demonstrate, to try and make it as obvious as possible that he wasn't kidding. He held up his hand, palm up, and then let himself change over. Golden scales seemed to form from nothing, the bones in his hand shifting in place. His thumb, index, and middle finger stayed more or less in the same place, but his ring and pinky finger seemed to shift back, farther away from the rest of his fingers.

He didn't let it go all the way. Making a wing was a particularly involved process, and instead he simply let his claws from, his hands now fully scaled and obviously twisted.

"Dragon." He said simply. "And you are as well, although perhaps not the same variety of dragon."

Charlie wasn't sure if it was good or bad that the old guy picked up on the overflow of not buying it.

He was even less sure about staring at his hand. While it... morphed? Shifted? Did really really creepy things that looked at the field of biology and anatomy and rolled on the floor laughing until pieces of itself fell off?

Well, it wasn't the staring she was unsure about. He was a bit too distracted for that. It was hard to think about much else when her stomach was so torn between hesitant excitement and reality-rejecting nausea.

...

It took a very long few seconds before Charlie could react at all, really. Even if the guy hadn't just turned his hand into a scaly mess of claw - a very effectively put together, if anatomically unconventional scaly mess of claw - and it was just an illusion - well. In a way, the illusion was proof of this place just as much.

He swallowed very carefully.

"So do you.... expect me to......" She had to swallow again, still unable to move his eyes from that hand. The trace of excitement trying to get a foothold felt familiar, but it was the familiar of something that had been carefully and thoroughly crushed until it gave up trying to emerge. It was the familiar of something that had led to round after round of pain, both physical and emotional. It wasn't an excitement she wanted. It was an excitement he had fought for a decade to recover from. "...To do that?"

Charlie was definitely shaken now. Still not quite handling the whole 'oh look I'm a dragon not a human like I thought' thing, but the initial disbelief was already blowing away in tiny, useless fragments of nothing. Charlie wasn't sure what was supposed to be in its place.

It took him a few moments to compose himself, aware that he should probably not be laughing when the girl was so clearly upset, but her question had been so... so out there. Like she was expected to just turn into a dragon at the drop of a hat.

"Oh no, no." He forced out, trying to compose himself. Poor thing probably thought she was going to turn right into a dragon, and Hudson flexed his hand, shaking it out the way someone would shake out a stiff muscle as his hand shifted back to a normal human hand. "No, not at all. I've had a few thousand years to master partial shifting. That sort of thing is extremely hard. You might not even be capable of partial shifting - not all dragons can." For many it was an all or nothing, and attempting to stop midway created useless and extremely painful forms.

"No, I simply... well, wanted you to know. The exact reason you're human is... well, it's a bit beyond me." There were a lot of reasons a dragon might appear as a human, although the fact that she was ignorant to it was narrowed down. "It's possible you're only half, although that seems unlikely, and you'll eventually come into your abilities. Or it's possible you were confined to a human shape for whatever reason. My specific species doesn't dabble in what others would call draconic magic, so it's far from my area of expertise." No, if it was magic, he'd be very little help, but he at least knew the rest.

The man's laugh was a welcome distraction. Charlie wrapped himself in irritation and hid from the tangled mess of... whatever in her stomach and his heart, and steadied her hands even as he glared.

It still took effort to deflect the repeated details, to shrug them aside like fireflies in the wind and keep them from biting like mosquitoes. Irritation and anger were not common emotions for Char, though they were hardly unfamiliar. She had made himself steady. Calm. Balanced.

She had no balance now, and he didn't like it.

"Yeah, well, all I know is that I've always been human. Hardly would've been adopted out there if I were scaly and since I was then I clearly wasn't, even before people started taking pictures."

Charlie didn't like any pictures of her, but that was... different.

Only a little bit though, and he was far from an expert. "You'll probably want to consult someone who knows more about draconic magic, or at least about magic. Like I said, my kind isn't terribly magical. We can do a lot of stuff, but... well, not that sort of thing." He'd never heard of one of his kind being bespelled into a human form, assuming that happened. "You're practically screaming just how dragon you are though, so..." He trailed off, frowning for a moment before returning to his usual easy smile.

"Either it means the magic's wearing off, or else it's ready to come off. Either way, your dragon self is probably going to try and assert itself. So try not to be surprised if you end up with scales popping up, or funny eyes, or half a dozen other things." And considering the wide variety that fell under 'dragon', there could be a lot of weird things. "And don't be surprised if other dragons end up approaching you. You might as well be wearing a neon sign that says 'Hey there I'm a dragon' for all to see."

He almost asked if she had any questions, but decided against asking. If she had questions, she'd ask - and she seemed to need a moment to digest it.

Of course magical and magical creatures would vary in exactly a way that made things more difficult right now. THINGS WERE WEIRD ENOUGH. She just wanted answers. Ideally answers that didn't result in abruptly and permanently being some hundred-foot-long furnace with wings and claws like meathooks.

Well. Smaug was actually probably a whole lot longer than a hundred feet, but Char wasn't really in the right position to figure out the right length. It didn't even matter one bit.

Breathe. Just breathe.

"Not like I don't have enough to deal with already here..." Wrong tack. Breathe. He could still be emotionally balanced or whatever it was she had spent so long working towards. "Do you know of anyone in particular who might be able to help?"

Oh dear god not a sign. Is that what he seemed like? A kick-me sign about dragonhood. Now might be a good time to crawl into some dark hole under a tree and never ever ever ever ever come out.

While dragons could vary from small to large, Hudson was on the absolutely massive end of the scale. He never fully transformed anywhere but his cave in the islets, because it was so unwieldy it was almost completely useless.

Unfortunately, she asked literally the one question he had no answer to, and he shrugged. "I've only arrived fairly recently." Well, recently in dragon years. "And I haven't gotten much of a grip on the Dragon community here, if there is one. Your best bet would be asking at the school, and seeing what sort of mages they have up there who might be able to help. There might even be a dragon up there, if you're really lucky."

Oh sure. He basically leads her into a question and then can't answer it. Charlie wasn't exactly impressed. He was more stressed than unimpressed, but unimpressed was definitely on the list right now.

"Just asking around on campus in general? Wonderful." It was pretty rare for Char to be sarcastic, especially around relative strangers, but this was kind of a .... hopefully rare situation. "I guess it's better than nothing, considering how messed up everything is now..."

"Would you rather I not have said? I could have let you live in ignorance until some territorial dragon decides to attack. Or perhaps let you live with it until you suddenly grow a set of claws while scratching someone and take out their eyes." He could have gone on and on, could have listed out a thousand horrible fates she might have encountered. Shifting was messy, dangerous business, and uncontrollable shifting all the more. "Better to know, even if you don't know everything. That way if anything goes wrong, you at least have a general idea of what is going wrong." It would let her ask for help a hell of a lot easier.

But he supposed he should at least try and offer a bit more help, and he let out an exasperated sigh. "I'm a teacher at Juvie Island. If you need help with dragon related things, you can always send a message through the school." He was assuming she went to Starlight Academy, but it was a pretty safe assumption. There really wasn't much variety in the schooling - it was Starlight Academy or bust. Technically there was a public school system, but... well, who would choose that when the academy existed?
