"UNLOCK - CHEST - PLOT."

"Did you hear that?"

The moment Freddy asked, the voice he heard reverberated in his mind again, and said, this time much more clearly, "SHE CAN'T HEAR ME. YET."

It then hit him - that voice was something else. It was... the demon that had his soul. There was also the possibility of it being some random ass trying to be funny and play an inappropriate prank, however unlikely it was. Before he could meditate further on the choices presented to him, however, he had to consult his companion.

"Hey. I think the demon's... talking to mEEEAAARGH!"

Suddenly, Freddy was glowing a surreal, reddish hue and twitching erratically in midair above the unmoving body on the table. His movements were wild, and gradually settled down, until he was poised right above the body's heart, shaft pointing down and keyring facing Evangeline. His reddish hue remained, and the keyring morphed into a sinister mouth, as though grinning ear to ear. "HELLO, GIRL."

The voice echoed throughout the room, a cacophony of what seemed to be a mix of a dozen different voices, discordant and strange. Its inflection was almost silky, and it sounded vaguely male, each word dripping with polite indimidation. "I SEE MISTER PLOTT HAS FOUND HELP. THAT POOR KEY. BUT THERE IS SOMETHING I HAVE TO ASK SO I KNOW HOW MUCH I SHOULD LAUGH... DID HE TELL YOU THE ENTIRE STORY?"

Disregarding Evangeline and not even giving her a chance to respond, the voice carried on. "LOOK AROUND. THIS KEY - THIS MAN ON THE TABLE GAVE UP HIS SOUL TO ME FAIR AND SQUARE. AND THEN HE TRIED TO RIP ME OFF! SO I DID THE GROWN-UP, REASONABLE THING AND RIPPED HIS SOUL IN HALF. NOW, I DIDN'T HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH HIM BEING A KEY - THAT'S ALL ON HIM. BUT YOU CAN STILL BRING HIM BACK, NON? PUT HIS SOUL TOGETHER AND SHOVE IT BACK INTO HIS BODY?"

The key plunged straight down, stabbing into the body's stomach. However, no blood spilled out from the dull shnk; instead, the hole grew vertically, and became a zipper that bisected the body lengthwise. A solitary tentacle, thin and long, poked out of the body's mouth, forcing it open and extending. It pulled the zipper open, and from within the hole emanated a sickening glow of dull red.

The voice boomed again, this time a bit more coherent. Freddy's red glow turned into a tether of tiny runes, connected to some distant anchor within the zipper. "IF YOU CAN, FEEL FREE TO TRY IT, GIRL... I EVEN OPENED UP A WAY TO MY LITTLE SLICE OF HELL. IF YOU CAN GET THIS SOUL BACK... I'LL EVEN REWARD YOU FOR IT. BUT IF YOU CAN'T... YOU'RE GOING TO BE HERE FOREVER. IS THIS SOUL WORTH THE RISK? YOU TELL ME - IN TEN MINUTES, THIS PORTAL WILL CLOSE AND I WILL LOCK YOU OUT OF THIS ENTIRE DIMENSION FOREVER. CHOOSE WELL, GIRL. YOU DON'T WANT TO DISAPPOINT THE AUDIENCE."

On cue, what sounded like cheering from a massive crowd came issuing forth from the portal, and the light cleared up, becoming instead a warm, sunlight-colored glow. Freddy jerked again in midair, confused. "Okay, what - what the fuck is this shit under me what the absolute -"

Evangeline was obviously surprised and a bit scared by the sudden change on Freddy’s behavior and voice, it only took him a second or two to piece everything together and realize that she was no longer talking to the ripped soul inside the key that came to her asking for help earlier that same day, but the demon that was responsible for said mutilation.

She listened carefully to the words of the demon, staying as calm and collected as possible to avoid entering into panic and take what probably could be false assumptions or wrong decisions relying completely in that awful feeling. She had to admit that the story of the demon solved a couple of questions but also created a lot more…not that she was surprised about this.

By experience she could tell that demons loved to talk in mysterious ways to confuse the ones around them, the confusion going from simply intimidate them a bit more, to getting something out of them by misleading them into taking the option that they subtly placed on their mind.

However, this was the first time that she actually had to deal with this…specific kind of demon, so she wasn’t sure of what kind of tricks he had under his sleeves and she didn’t had any kind of tricks of her own just yet…what made her feel especially nervous.

As the demon talked she grabbed her halo, which from being just a ring of intangible light turned into a solid glowing golden ring on her hand. She was ready to transform it into a holly sword if the demon attempted any kind of aggressive approach towards her, but at the moment she only played with it a bit to help herself to relax.

Evangeline almost jumped when the key pierced the body on the chest…though she wasn’t sure of how to react when the zipper appeared, as well as the tentacle. Being fully honest, she couldn’t help but feel a bit suspicious, demons rarely opened portals to their world to angels of her kind, given how incredibly risky it could be for them. After all, if she found out where the demon stored the souls she could easily take not just one, but several of them…if not all, and demons were always trying to avoid that no matter what.

Was this portal lie the bait on a fishing rod? She couldn’t really tell, but for what the demon said she had to make up her mind and quick. This may be the only way to go into the demon’s dimension and get the soul…so it wasn’t like if she had that many options left anyways. For her any soul, regardless of who it belonged to, was worth the risk. She wouldn’t be able to forgive herself if she let this soul slip just because of fear…plus, if she got stuck on the demon’s world she could always try to find a way out after.

She looked at Freddy as he returned to his normal self. She ran a hand over her hair, taking a deep breath “The demon opened a portal to his world, but I find this kinda fishy, usually demons don’t do this for really obvious reasons. However, this may be our only way to go there and he’s going to close it soon, so I guess that there is no other option but risk it…” She looked t Freddy, since he had half his soul in him, he may be able to guide her through this hell safely, but if he got in with her there was a chance of her giving that half of the soul to the demon in a silver plate and doing more harm than good to him.

“Going there may be a one-way ticket, so I’m not going to force you to come with me. After all, if I don’t make it you can always get help from someone else later, but if the demon in there gets you that ‘later’ may never come” With those words she walked towards the portal and looked inside, clearly nervous and tightly holding the halo on her right hand, ready to jump in before the time ran out.

"Are you fucking kidding? This is my soul on the line and you expect me to stay behind? I - hang on," Freddy asked, before heaving as if throwing up. It was hard to be a key, though this time he was thankful that he didn't have a physical body so he didn't have to watch his vomit drop several hundred meters down to the ground.

He quickly floated himself over to Evangeline and tried to figure out where on her he could tuck himself. Trying to keep up with her would be too frustrating, and the glowing tether of runes would prove more useful is she could more easily follow it. After all she was going to be doing most of the heavy lifting.

Carefully, the key settled into Evangeline's hair right above her left ear, where Freddy could still see some of the action and where the tether would be visible right by the side of her field of vision.

This was it, the point of no return. Both of them knew it - whatever would happen down there, neither of them would come back whole.

"Hey... if we don't make it back - well, it might not be much, but... thanks."[/quote]

Evangeline smiled at Freddy as he carefully settled into her hair. She wasn’t going to lie here, she was happy to have some company, she wasn’t showing it mostly to not make Freddy get any more nervous, but she was sincerely terrified. If she at least knew what kind of demon she was facing and a couple of the tricks that he could be hiding under his sleeve she would feel a bit more confident. But no, she was facing a completely unknown demon in his own territory, in other words she was walking blindfolded straight into the lion’s den.

She just smiled with Freddy’s words “Don’t even mention it” With that and a deep breath, she jumped inside the scary portal made by the demon, trying to not think on what she was doing to avoid retreating on the very last second.

At least she wasn’t going alone, and that gave her some comfort. But she had to also remember that the one that was accompanying her was also the one in greatest danger, since his soul was exactly the thing that this demon seemed to be looking for. The halo on her hand turned into a golden holy sword with a small beam of light. She had to be ready, just in case.

Freddy floated close to Evangeline, nesting himself in her hair. He couldn't quite stand height for a reason unknown to him, but a distant memory flashed in his head as he peered over the brim of her hair. Below them was a massive, though rather normal looking city. The only thing that seemed off was the purplish hue of the lighting streaming down from above.

He couldn't quite figure out why, but for a moment he saw it erupt into flames and fire, and grotesque tendrils. As quickly as it came, it went. "Fuck. I think I've - I feel like I've seen this before. Does that - that happen a lot in these things? I don't know."

On cue, a massive fog enveloped the entirety of the city below, and that voice from earlier rang out. "DON'T WORRY, I'M NOT GOING TO JUST SWARM YOU WITH MINIONS. I HAVE SOME CLASS."

The ground rumbled beneath them, though what caused it could not be seen through the thick veil of mist. "IT'S SIMPLE. COME AND FIND ME. WE'RE JUST GOING TO HAVE A MAZE TYPE OF GAME. THE ONLY RULE IS - YOU HAVE TO WALK."

Freddy looked around and felt something off to the side. A massive silhouette seemed as if it were rising from the fog. It was vague, but then it grew more defined - looking sort of tendril-like -

"LOOK OUT!"

Evangeline took a deep breath, even if the demon told them that he wasn’t going to send his army of minions against them he never said that he wouldn’t send something else, or that he wasn’t going to attack them in any way, and she had learned that sometimes the words left unspoken were the most important of them all.

A maze…and she only could walk? Great…now she wouldn’t be able to have the advantage to fly in this place. She just took a deep breath and started to walk, looking around carefully with her sword tightly held on her hands, she wouldn’t let anything surprise her if she could do something about it. She knew better than to argue or try to cheat on his little Game that the demon wanted to play. Not only because she was against cheating in any kind of way, but also because in this world, the demon’s word was law and trying to go against it had caused many angels to die in the past, she would do anything and everything on her power to avoid joining that group.

She didn’t know where she was supposed to go or if she was walking straight to a trap, and the fog wasn’t helping at all, but she knew better than to stay still. She noticed some movement between the fog, and as soon as she heard Freddy she raised her sword, looking to the tendril with a frown as she backed away from it.

There was the Jack in the box! She knew that the demon wouldn’t allow them to just to walk around and find him…if they didn’t got forever lost in here first. She wasn’t sure if he just wanted to toy with them, have some entertainment of his own, or if he was actually trying to kill them, and she wasn’t going to stay to find out.

[OOC: Evangeline can run? Or only walk?]

"I THINK YOU TOOK ME TOO LITERALLY," rang the demon's cacophonous voice through the maze's walls. A slight hint of amusement riddled with frustration tinged it as it spoke again. "IT NEEDN'T ALL BE SO LITERAL, GIRL. TAKE SOME TIME TO READ BETWEEN THE LINES EVERY NOW AND THEN."

As if on cue, out sprang from the ground a few lines of fire, and some runic writing glowing in between them with a sinister pink hue. They weren't proper daemonic runes either - to those who could read them, they translated to nothing more than "please consult the manual for a proper translation" in Spanish.

Soft laughter issued from the runes, and so did the demon's voice. "QUICK. KEY PERSON - TOUCH THE LETTERS. DO IT. DO IT."

More demons joined in, sounding not unlike a football stadium at the height of Superbowl. Freddy could only swear at the ruckus. "Why the fuck should I listen -"

"I PROMISE THERE'S NO HARM IN THERE - IT'S A TUTORIAL OF SORTS FOR A NEW MECHANIC. WE DEMONS ARE BOUND BY PROMISES." As the demon spoke again, a scroll dropped in from a zipper above them, opening itself on the ground. It was a contract, signed in what appeared to be ancient blood, complete with the characteristic smell of blood. "I BREAK MY PROMISE, AND I BREAK MY SPINE. SOUND GOOD ENOUGH?"

"Not really." Freddy floated down and touched the runes, making another voice - this time much lower in pitch - speak out. "ESTA TRADUCCION ES INCORRECTA. POR FAVOR, CONSULTE EL MANUAL."

"SEE, THAT WASN'T SO BAD? NOW I'M THINKING I'LL LEAVE CLUES RANDOMLY ALL OVER THE PLACE. MAKE IT MORE GAME-LIKE. YOU TOUCH THEM, THEY SPEAK AND SAY THEIR CLUES - THE GIRL TOUCHES THEM, THEY EXPLODE INTO SOMETHING MESSY. SOUND ABOUT RIGHT?"

"Fuck you, my man," Freddy muttered. It felt horrible to be powerless at the moment, and it felt even worse for him, as it seemed like the voice knew him - and like he knew the voice vaguely. More letters began to glow on the floor as the corridor shifted, becoming a long hallway. There was a sinking feeling in Freddy as he sank to touch it, having an idea of what exactly it would say -

"LOW-LEVEL FIRE DEMONS COMING IN."

As though orchestrated, the ground at one far end of the hallway rumbled, and Freddy could distantly make out some glowing silhouettes, starting to come nearer and nearer.

"Seriously. Fuck this guy. Wanna bail?"

Evangeline could only watch at the whole thing with a bit of annoyance. She wasn’t new to the whole thing of demons liking to use the ones around them as toys for their own amusement, but none has be this freaking literal about that.

She would need to be careful to not accidentally touch one of the supposed clues that the demon was going to be leaving all over the maze, not only because she felt that the clues could be crucial not only to reach the demon, but also to survive to this sick game of his, but because she wasn’t willing to deal with any mess bigger than the one they were already facing. Plus, that could put Freddy on a far more dangerous situation.

She let out a deep sigh, looking at the fire demon at the distance “You have no idea of how much I would love to, but we need to recover your soul, Freddy, and I’m not going to just give up. However…I think it would be a good idea to move!”

She grabbed Freddy gently, placing him on her hair like he was earlier so he wouldn’t be left behind, and turned around running. She didn’t want to look like a fool or a coward, but anyone that knew anything about purifier angels like her would immediately know that she was far from being a warrior, and though her fighting skills were respectable she was far from being a true threat, so if they could find a way out of this mess without a fight, things would be a lot easier for them. She still held the sword tightly on her hands though, just in case.

“If you see any clue that I miss tell me immediately, ok Freddy? We obviously need those if we want to make it out of here alive” She was looking for them, yes, but she also had to look around for potential threats and to know where to turn to not run straight into a wall.

It wasn’t until that specific moment that she noticed the huge disadvantage of not being able to fly. She wasn’t even near to get tired yet, but if she could fly they would be going a lot faster and she wouldn’t need to worry all the time to watch her step, just in case there were any traps in the floor that she could step in or activate.

They arrived to a fork on the road, leading to three branches with the elementals behind them. Yet another set of runes glimmered ahead, and Freddy called out for a bit of a slow-down so he could poke it as they ran past.

It rang out in the distance, echoing through the three hallways. Freddy hovered close and brushed against it. Another voice spoke out, and the elementals slowed to the pace of a snail, as though the voice kept them in check.

"TO THE LEFT - STARVATION
TO THE MIDDLE - CONGREGATION
TO THE RIGHT - SALVATION
"

"Fuck. Why did they have to put puzzles in? I'm absolute shit at puzzles." Freddy cursed some more, and then some more when he noticed the elementals close in, their fire seemingly growing more and more intense now that there was no longer an unknown force keeping them in control.

Had he hands, he would have grabbed Evangeline and ran to somewhere random. But as it was now, he was powerless. It felt mortifying to be powerless, and most of all, frustrating. Like he was confined and constrained, and waiting to break free.

In his frustration, he didn't notice the thinnest of purple lines form in the air, connecting him to something far away to the right.
