Warren wasn’t surprised when Enelen started to shoot some questions at him. He supposed that he would have them anyways. However, the expression of shock on his face made him wonder if he had went a bit too fast…for him this info was just an everyday thing, but probably for the boy in front of him it was a bomb of information.

Geez, he really needed to be softer when talking instead of taking everything for granted. He knew that baby-talk to him wasn’t a good idea, but for the looks of it he could’ve been a lot gentler on the way that he handed the info at him.

“Yeah, in this world, magic is extremely rare, to the point where most people doesn’t even believe that it exists at all. That’s why we depend so much on technology and science” He had to admit it, he was between the group that didn’t believe in magic until his powers got triggered…if magic was suddenly made of public knowledge the whole world would be a chaos or there would be a second Dark Age when speaking of how the magic community and creatures would be treated like.

“You can take me as an example. Before I even discovered my powers I had what in this world could be considered a normal life, a life without even knowing that magic existed at all. I was just as shocked as you are right now when I found out that I was actually a thing and it took me some time to fully accept it”.

The thought of someone literally not believing in magic was like saying someone didn't believe in ears. They were right there on the side of everyone's head, so how could you not believe in them? It was taking him a bit to wrap his head around it all - to remind himself in this world, people didn't actually have ears, even if they looked like they did.

Metaphorically speaking, anyway.

"So you have magic now?" He kept saying 'powers', but Enelen really didn't have a reference point for what that meant. What was a power? Access to magic? He'd certainly never thought of that as a power, and if anyone had asked him if he had powers before, he'd have said no.

It didn't occur to him that asking someone about their powers might be a bit personal. After all, asking someone about their magic wasn't any more personal than asking where someone had gone to school. It was just a totally normal topic of conversation, one that would come up after meeting someone for the first time almost every time.

"I really can't imagine not knowing about magic." And he really couldn't. He couldn't wrap his head around it just yet. It was too strange, too different. Too fundamentally wrong from the world he'd known.

Warren tried to put himself on the place of Enelen for a couple of seconds, how would it be if he found himself in his world, a world without technology where magic was the most common thing around. That obviously would take quite a while to get used to…but then, he wasn’t sure if he would be able to control any kind of magic without technology thanks to the source of his own powers.

“Yeah, but my magic is tightly linked to the technology, without it I wouldn’t have any” Wow…hum…saying magic instead of powers felt kinda odd, but he guessed that he would need to force himself out of his comfort zone and into Enelen as much as possible to help him to understand a bit faster.

“Well, I can’t imagine not knowing about technology, so I guess that we are more or less the same on that kind of area” While talking he moved his fingers inside the glove controlling his glasses, making obvious that he was looking for something on them while talking.

He was mostly searching for examples and videos that would allow his new friend to get a better grasp of this world “Also, I forgot to introduce myself, my name is Warren” He said almost absentmindedly “Is there any question that you want to make? I’m not the wisest one around, but I can try to help you out”.

He wasn't entirely sure if he really meant magic. Or maybe his worlds magic was so far from Enelen's type of magic that he was having a hard time wrapping his head around it. Sure, Enelen himself could say that his kind of magic was learning, unwinding, and teleportation, but it wasn't as if he could only do those. Any magic anyone else in his world was capable of, he was capable of as well, and it was really just a lack of experience that separated them.

He'd sort of decided that the boy used hand gestures to do his magic, which was... well, not common, but at least possible. Some people within the School of Words emphasized their magic with hand gestures, although it was mostly pointing at things or waving your hands in certain ways.

Warren. That was good, because he'd grown tired already of thinking of him as 'the other boy'. Names were good. He had an awful lot of questions though, and he found himself balking slightly as he tried to figure out which question was the most important to ask.

"I don't... really know." He paused for a moment, before deciding that if he tried to spend all his time thinking of the best one, then he'd be there all day. Better to think of something simple. "How do you make light?" He pointed up at the light above them, glowing softly. Such a minor thing, but it was done so differently from his own world.

Warren looked up, staring at the light over them. He couldn’t help but feel surprised, yeah, he should had expected something like this from a boy that had no idea of technology, but he had been expecting something a bit more complex…guess he would need to start completely from scratch, Enelen had literally no basic knowledge about technology, what would make this a tiny bit more complicated for him.

“Oh…well…” Using the projector on his glasses he showed at him the 3D image of the most basic of light bulbs, thinking that doing so would be easier than just jump in and tell him all the scientific stuff that was behind it, he probably would only make him even more confused if he did so…dear Lord, he felt like if he was talking to a three year old.

“We use the small string-like structure inside this glass bulb to produce the light, we only need some electricity as well, which comes from generators that are either local or feed the entire city. I can explain it to you in a lot more of detail if you want to, but it would be a bit too complicated if you don’t know the basics yet”

He looked at his new friend, hoping that he was clear enough, or that at least he kinda understood him.

Enelen watched with obvious curiosity at the demonstration, only yes, it was very confusing. He got the idea of the string thing holding energy - because they did have materials that held magic - but mostly he didn't get the electricity bit. Certainly he knew what electricity was - in a very general sense - but he didn't quite... get it.

"Alright, so... I know electricity. Like, that's lightning, right? A storm comes and it zaps things and can start fires, because it's a high amount of energy being concentrated." That much he got, even if it wasn't very interesting. "So... are you saying you... generate lightning?" The whole thing seemed a tad unbelievable to him. Maybe not unbelievable as in impossible, but unbelievable as in insanely dangerous. Who would put lightning in the walls? What if something broke? Was a bolt of lightning going to - okay now that was him being silly. He knew how it worked. It would take the path of least resistance to the ground, so unless he pressed his hand up against the wall beneath a broken bulb...

Ok…this was going to be harder than what he expected.

“Well…not exactly…I mean, we do produce electricity with those generators, but the amount isn’t even as near to that of a lighting...I still wouldn’t suggest you to test it though, it may not be as strong, but it can still be dangerous” He was having a hard time trying to decide what he was going to show him now, and how he was going to teach him about technology.

Just as he grew surrounded by magic all his life, Warren had grown surrounded by technology, to the point where he had adapted so well to it that he couldn’t truly bring himself to explain it to someone that didn’t know it existed until now…

“I could show you a generator if you want, but you would need to know a lot about physics and stuff like that to know exactly how it works” As he talked he started to look for info related to generators, as well as images and description of their components and how they worked, just in case Enelen showed interest towards the subject.

Ahhh, it was all just very confusing. There seemed to be so much information, and wrapping his head around it was taking more work than he'd thought. He'd kind of assumed there would be some direct parallel with how things were done in his world, only it seemed it wasn't nearly that simple. It wasn't parallel system, just one with similar results... in some cases.

"It seems like I'd be better served by going to the library and finding a book intended for children who are just learning this stuff. It seems like the sort of thing that would be best taught by an actual teacher, or a textbook." He said, not trying to be rude but no doubt being a bit rude anyway. He just liked books. They were neat and helpful, and written by people who knew exactly what they were talking about. It didn't involve any guessing, and because they'd been planned out ahead of time, there also wasn't any 'wait I should have explained this other bit first' like there tended to be with explanations.

Proper lectures by proper professors tended to basically be like listening to someone who was talking like a book, only you could also ask questions.

Warren sighed, he rarely used books at all, but maybe he had to get out from his own comfort zone to help Enelen. H was far from used to do that, but he saw no other way, it was a good thing that at least in his world books apparently were a thing and they didn’t learned everything through some kind of odd magic.

“I guess you’re right there, I can guide you to the library, and even recommend you a book or two if you want” Just because he hadn’t touched a real book in years didn’t meant that he couldn’t find them...hopefully.

As he started to walk with him he decided that he maybe could ask him a couple of things while he had the chance, it would be impossible to know when he would get this chance again anyways “So…just by curiosity, how is light made in your world? If you don’t use electricity or light bulbs, what produces it and how is it maintained?”.

Hey, just because Warren had been skeptical almost all his life didn’t meant that he wouldn’t be curious. He knew perfectly that Enelen’s kind of magic probably was far beyond his reach, but knowing about it wouldn’t harm him at all.

"I've already been." Enelen admitted. He'd gone to the library first, before he'd even gone to his room. Why not? The library was a thousand times more interesting than any bedroom, and while he'd found his roommate interesting, no one person was ever going to be as interesting as a library as grand and vast as the one on campus.

The question about light was an easy one, the sort of thing taught to children, although he had to wrap his head around how to properly explain it. He really had to start from the basics.

"Well, there's a few different ways. The way we mostly used were generally either transparent crystals or balls of glass that have been specially enchanted so that you give them a bit of mana, and they convert it into light. The best lights are made by the school of rituals though. They have large orbs that collect light during the day, and then automatically start to glow as night falls. My school would trade for orbs like that for use in public spaces that you want to always be lit, and they'll last hundreds of years without upkeep." And there were even more complex versions that you could turn on and off with a touch, even if they were otherwise automatic. Those were the best, but they were also difficult to make, in part because there was so much else they could do. Turning on at certain times automatically, or changing how strong they glowed. Some could even swap colors, for appropriate mood lighting.
