Warren walked calmly through the school corridors, ¼ of his visual range occupied by a small chat window displayed by his prized glasses…ok, ok, he may be programing…ok, fine! He was hacking into several of the servers of Manta Carlos. Why? He was bored and he never heard about this place, it was obvious that he was interested and the public information didn’t satisfied him.

He wanted to know everything about this place, though he was careful to start low. He wasn’t going to jump in straight into the academy’s servers or the top-secret records of the most important places of the islands.

He was walking calmly when he saw him…another student that was…checking the fire alarm? The hell? Was he trying to pull a prank with it or something? But if that was the case he was taking a bit too long. How hard it was to pull down the small lever on it and run off? He was definitely going to get caught in the act if he stood there like a darn moron.

After a minute or two he sighed, annoyed, and walked towards him, a quick movement from his hand where he had the glove being more than enough to push away the hacking window, leaving the servers undetected, just like always. He put a hand on the shoulder of the other student, lowering his headphones with the other “What are you doing?”.

When Enelen explained to people that his world was entirely based on magic, most people got a general idea but didn't go quite far enough. When he said that it was entirely based on magic, he meant entirely. His world was even more dependent on magic than people realized. Everything was done by magic. If he wanted to cook food, magic. If he wanted to go out in the rain, magic. Everything was magic, and that included basic safety mechanisms like anti-fire.

Of course, in that department at least magic won out. Fire was rarely a real risk and easily extinguished in his world, and there was no direct equivalent of a fire alarm.

Which is why the whole thing was so baffling. What was it? What was a 'fire alarm'? An alarm for fire? It was just... everything. It was a mystery. A giant question mark. He didn't understand a bit of it. It was just a box on the wall, with the words 'fire alarm' and what looked like a strange handle. Should he pull it? It said 'pull down' with a neat little arrow, but he was at least cautious enough to not simply follow instructions on strange boxes.

He jumped, fingers digging hard into the staff he carried with him as he spun, reacting to being touched first. But it was just a boy - another student wearing a whole bunch of things he couldn't begin to guess at.

At least the question was simple, and he clutched at his staff, eyes wide.

"I was looking at the 'fire alarm'. I don't know what it does." Simply enough, and to most people that would be enough to prompt an explanation, which he was clearly hoping for.

He…had to be kidding. He was left speechless for a couple of seconds before he finally snapped out of it and recovered his voice “Well…hum…you just pull the handle and then an alarm will go off all over the building. As the name says it must be only used in case of a fire if the heat sensors on the ceiling don’t detect it on time” Explaining what a fire alarm did was a bit awkward, at least for him that had grown in a world full of technology like this all his life.

He knew that this would be wrong but…oh, screw it. With a couple of swift movements of his hand where he had his glove on, opening a new screen in his glasses, occupying all the vision field of his right eye, and quickly got into the academy’s files, it was an extremely superficial hack to enter to the students files and quickly searched for her photo…ah, there it was! Enelen of the Scepter…an interesting name, though he really couldn’t judge, he had only heard common human names during all his life until now, maybe it was a common name somewhere else?

“So…Enelen, are you really telling me that you’re 19 years old and you don’t know what a fire alarm is….oh…wait, you come from another world? Cool!” Well, that explained a lot of stuff, though he couldn’t help but wonder how that world was and what kind of technology they had, it had to be really different from this world’s if he really didn’t recognized a fire alarm.

He simply couldn’t even think of the possibility of their world not having technology at all, probably a side effect of how much he needed it, not only because of everyday stuff, but because without it he would be just an everyday human without powers.

So it was to be used if a fire happened? But then there was talk about sensors, and... well, a lot of stuff he was still trying to wrap his head around.

The boy was obviously doing something, and it was like... there was some sort of bizarre marks on his glasses that seemed to be moving, and... Well, he just really wasn't grasping it at all. He was waving his hand, and Enelen's first thought was that he was from the School of Words, who despite their name often incorporated hand gestures to go with their words.

In fact, when he finally spoke again, he'd come to the conclusion that he'd used magic to investigate him, which was usual enough although a tad invasive. He bristled a bit, straightening up. "You have magic glasses?" That would explain whatever he was seeing. His own world had a similar sort of magic, although it was generally used with books. He supposed it was entirely possible someone could have adjusted an information-gathering spell to display on any surface at all. Books were simply the most commonplace and useful. It would simply have to be high level magic to make it appear properly on the glasses, without warping... unless he didn't actually need glasses, which was also possible.

That was really the nature of the new world he found himself in. Plenty of speculation, but not a lot of solid facts.

"I'd be very interested in knowing how you adapted it to display on glasses - mostly in my world we just use books." Books were used for a whole lot of things, which is why almost everyone had several blank ones handy. Information gathering and display had always been an area of expertise for him, and he'd had a veritable library of books handy at any given time.

Warren couldn’t help but laugh a bit with the boy’s question. Oh dear lord, wasn’t him hilarious? “No, no, my glasses are high-tech devices controlled wirelessly with the glove I have on my hand. There is no magic involved in any of this at all” He tried to be as clear as possible, not exactly knowing how much Enelen could understand about this world’s technology, or if things had different names from where he came at all.

He tilted his head a bit “Well, most books in this world had already been digitalized, so whoever downloads them from the internet has easy and quick access to the. Is like having the world’s biggest library in the palm of your hand, literally, look” He pushed a small button on the left side of his glasses, turning on a small projector so the images would stop displaying only for him on his glasses, but also in a tridimensional way between them.

“You want a book about biology…” He entered into his school database and downloaded the first biology book he found, passing the pages with his glove “You want to watch a movie…” He entered into one of the many movie sites on the internet and entered in a random movie, playing it in front of Enelen “Play a game…” He entered into his videogame database, picking Halo and showing a quick gameplay to him.

“It’s pretty simple if you think about it” He pressed the button again, turning off the projector and quickly closing all the newly open tabs “And that isn’t even half the things you can do with this. But what about your world, what kind of technology you use there? I’m sure that it must be fairly different if you couldn’t easily identify a common fire alarm”.

What the boy had said might as well have been another language entirely. Technically everything was translating over without fail, but no spell could translate a word that had no equivalent. There was no concept for 'wirelessly' in his world, because there had never been any wires. It was like saying that a computer functioned without the need to shake it rhythmically.

There was no internet, either, but he could understand the idea of the world's biggest library. His was certainly large, but not the biggest, and he watched with interest as the boy did something and started to display it, his mouth falling open to form a little 'o'.

He was obviously not faking his interest.

That said, the way he said the world 'technology' sounded funny - in part because there was nothing to translate. He was just having to mimic the english word.

"We don't have this... technology. I don't know the word." The word was completely foreign to him, with no equivalent. "I have access to a massive library through my magic, but I'm only a low level mage, so I'd have to display it on a book." He knew at least some people could display in the air, but that was a more high level magic, and one considered more showy than practical.

There was really almost never an actual need to display things in the air, after all. "Your own world appears to have gone in a much different way than my own." If he already knew he was from another world, there wa really no need to beat around the bush.

For Warren, the idea of a word without technology, where everything worked only with magic, was just as alien as how the idea of a world without magic was to Enelen. This was definitely going to be quite an interesting talk with the new boy.

He started to carefully look inside Enelen’s files again, this time being more careful while he read his info “Wait…you mean that you really don’t have technology in your world? How do you and the rest of the people of that world do everyday things then?” Since his power as a whole was so tightly linked to the technology he was far from being able to consider himself a mage of any kind…unless he transformed into a character that was already a mage, but that was another story.

He smiled and nodded “I bet!” Two worlds, but each one completely different from the other in the way that they were developed depending on the abilities of their population. One basing its whole existence in magic while the other had to create technology.

“Would you mind telling me about your world and how it works? I can do the same with this one, if you feel like it” Knowledge for knowledge, it was a fair exchange, right?

It was definitely going to be an eye opening conversation. They were both operating on very different perspectives.

"Well, I don't really know what you do with technology, but I imagine whatever you do with technology, we do with magic, and vice versa... for the most part." That made sense to him. Magic was created to address problems, and from the way the boy was talking, that was what technology did to. He considered for a moment that technology might actually be magic, but quickly decided against it. If that was true, his translation spell would simply have given him the word 'magic' instead, so it must have been different.

He considered the question. It was actually a fairly deep one, and the sort of thing he could imagine writing a whole essay on back on his own world. "Well, it's hard to really compare, because I know so little about your world. The best I can give is a sort of brief summary of my own world, and... yeah."

He paused to compose himself, and then launched into a detailed explanation, with a particular focus on magic.

"Humans evolved around two million years ago, but we were primitive and it took us millions of years to really get anywhere. Languages probably evolved properly around ten thousand years ago, although we only have records of about five thousand years ago. As best we can tell, magic has always existed. There is no culture in the world that doesn't have some form of magic, although every culture seemed to utilize their magic differently. Our progression shifted from nomadic hunters to farming around eleven thousand years ago, and our progress as a species started to speed up from that point. We had great cities and cultures for thousand of years, but I would say the majority of our progress has happened in the last thousand. Even the leaps of magic that we've had in the past two hundred years outclass the eight hundred before that. A few hundred years ago everyone was divided up into countries, and separated by physical location. With the advent of crude teleportation magics, the schools began to be formed, which allowed students to receive formal training, as opposed to being trained by a village elder or their parents. This let magic get even better, and..." He paused, forcing himself to take a deep breath. He was clearly excited to get to explain it all to someone, and perhaps he was getting a bit too excited. "Back then there were hundreds of schools, but over time they consolidated into four grand schools led by four grand mages, with a council of the most important mages advising them. There are still sub schools, but really everyone can be divided into staves, words, chants, or ritual. About a hundred and fifty years ago, our mana needs became too much and we started drawing mana from the earth itself - but three years ago we realized we'd drawn too much, and that the earth was dying." He grimaced at the memory, even though he liked to consider himself mostly over it. After all, he'd had three years to come to grips to it. "So we ended up transporting anyone who wanted to try and go to another world at random, so that at least some of our world would survive. And now I'm here." Which was probably unnecessary, because anyone would figure out how they went from 'transporting people to worlds' to... well, where he was then.

Warren listened carefully to Enelen’s story. It sounded a lot like the story of evolution of this planet…with a couple of twists here and there to make magic fit in properly in it, of course. It wasn’t until the establishment of the civilization when the stories slowly started to differ from each other…more or less at least.

He nodded after his new friend finished with his story, it would be interesting to dig in a book or two about his world’s story, just to know a bit more “I see, well, this world had to handle everything without even knowing that the magic existed at all for a while, at least until the Middle Ages. Yet, having magic back then was more likely to be a curse than a blessing. If you were found out using it you were immediately imprisoned and killed right away after all. It took several decades for people to stop doing that kind of stuff” He could give him a tablet with all the info that he could ever want about the subject…though then he would need to teach him how to use a tablet first.

“We are lucky that this kind of places exist, there are still a lot of people without magical powers that would love to either eliminate us, force us to follow their commands or keep us in cages to study us…and those are just a couple of examples, to be honest. You can’t just go out to what is considered the normal world and use your powers without that carrying a lot of different consequences”.

Well, even people without powers, but special talents were sometimes hunt down or governments were constantly trying to get a hold of them. He still had like a hundred of unread messages on his hacking account mail that were either death threats from people or companies that he had hacked or several offers from other companies or governments in an attempt to convince him to work for them. He usually just deleted them without even reading them and cut off any way that they could have to contact him again, just as a precaution to avoid being detected. It had worked for years after all.

“I can help you a bit if you want, you know, teach you how to use technology or what everything here does. You’ll need to learn sooner than later anyways and I guess that learning in the easy way would be a lot better than learning the hard way” Living in a world that depended so much on technology without knowing how to use it would come to bite him on the ass almost immediately. If he wanted to live here he needed to learn, and fast.

The nameless boy's explanation was... strange. This missing piece for him was something he'd taken for granted, something he just assumed would be true elsewhere. In his world, it wasn't just that every culture had it's own kind of magic - it was that everyone had magic. The only people who didn't... well, it was a bit like being born with only one arm, or born with no eyes. While he'd met people without magic on this world, it still had not quite dawned on him that magic was a rare trait. It was a bit like meeting someone who was blind - you wouldn't just assume that every other person you meet after would be blind.

And slowly, as he explained, it dawned on him. They were rare. People wanted to study them because they were rare, the way people in his world wanted to study rare diseases. Only rare diseases almost always made you worse, not better, which meant it wasn't fear but curiosity. His mouth opened slightly, hanging in a neat little 'o' as he tried to wrap his head around it.

"Hold on." The thought of lessons was appealing, but he had more important things to think about at that moment. "Do you mean that magic is... well, rare?" Normally he prided himself on his large vocabulary, but the magnitude of the whole thing had fried his brain a bit. "Like... almost no one has it?" Rare. Rare? It was so common in his world. Almost everyone. It was as if he'd just been told that everyone on this world was blind, or that no one on this planet needed to breath. Magic was such a fundamental part of his existence that he was struggling to wrap his head around it.
