Nicolas was not your average soldier. He had served with the French Foreign Legion, more out of camaraderie and desire to improve himself then out of loyalty to a country. France wasn't even his country. His own country had earned no more loyalty from him than any other country, and his battles tended to be more personal. Protecting the small region he'd assigned to. Fighting off desperate pirates that encroached upon it. Keeping peace and order there.

"Well, pretty strong suspicion that it's something about the island. Seems too coincidental that I get brought here, having just found out there's intelligent things in this world that aren't really human, and then immediately run into you... something that's not quite human." Nope, far too much of a coincidence for him. "So probably the island brought you here or something."

Magical island. It didn't explode around him like he imagined a leiline powerful enough to transport him would do, but then there was a city here. Perhaps it was a city of mages, and it was restrained even more than the minor adaptation Lest had forced on the frozen waterfall out of the sky.

It was entirely reasonable. "Well, if you ran into me so immediately, perhaps I will also soon run into someone especially unfamiliar." Once upon a time, the thought - all of this, really - might have terrified him, or perhaps excited him.

He felt nothing now. He spoke of facts, and considered dry details with connotation but not emotional reaction. Things existed. He would deal with them. Eventually he would die.

Then things would be still and balanced.

"Brought me here intentionally, automatically, or accidentally?" If there was intent behind the transportation, then the logical next step would be to seek out the source of that intent and the reason behind it.

Coete was going a bit above his head. It was all... well, a bit beyond him. He didn't know how Coete had gotten there. He didn't even know... well, okay, he knew how he'd gotten there (Ulrich had carried him), but he didn't know why. Ulrich had been as vague and unhelpful as one could expect a giant sea monster to be. He hadn't said why they were there at all. He hadn't said why he needed to be on land, or why he needed Nicolas's help. He'd left everything as vague as it possibly could be.

He was going to find out why that was, one way or another.

"You'd probably be best off asking a local." He finally confessed. "I can't answer my own questions, let alone yours." He almost gestured, and then remembered it was pointless, letting his hands drop to his side. "But if you carry up along this path, you should be able to find someone in the city who might help." As for him? Well, he was going along the path less travelled. He didn't want the city anymore. He wanted to find a single local.

More than that, he wanted to find if he was going to stumble onto someone else who was weird. It seemed like too much of a coincidence.

Coete had no grounds to argue with Nicolas even if he had been so inclined. The things he wondered about, the gaping holes in his knowledge, they were not things someone similarly new to the area could answer.

He nodded. He might have been born blind, but his mother had taught him something of expressions and gestures that sighted people relied on. He could use them, just not really pick up on them.

"I shall continue that way," he said calmly. "I bid you the best of luck in your own search."

Even street brats born to slaves could be formal. Coete rolled his shoulders slightly to stretch them, and then began working his way towards the (technically still theoretical) city.
