Coete. The name came easily enough. He had enough experience in a whole mess of European languages that precious few names were truly difficult for him to pronounce, and it was not as foreign as that.

"So if you're not from this world, how the hell did you get here?" It wasn't as if one could just walk over to another world. But if he was a mage, then perhaps he'd magicked himself over.

Nicolas was slowly relaxing, despite the bizarre antler on Coete's hip, and he let himself shift his weight, no longer as tense as he'd been when he first ran into something so clearly non-human.

"So I guess you're turning into a dragon then?" Or something certainly dragony enough. The scales on his hands made that much obvious.

"I haven't the slightest idea how I got here," he said honestly. He'd never been much of a liar. "I... may have gone a bit overboard, last thing I remember, but then I was just.... here."

Even as his new companion, Nicolas, began to relax, Coete remained awkwardly stiff. The emptiness and dully stabbing pain that had been born so shortly before his transportation here were far too fresh to fade away quite yet, and so many little things reminded him of what was lost, of who was lost.

....Dragon? Coete was distracted from his dark musings enough to run his hands over the ridges and bumps he was growing. "I guess," he hesitantly agreed. "My teacher might have known, but me... I don't know." He sighed heavily, face twisted from simply mentioning Lest. "I suppose I'll find out when its done."

To say he'd just found himself here was... well, a bit baffling. People didn't just go overboard and wake up on an island like this. Nicolas had spent a lot of time on the water, and if he'd gone overboard...

He let out a little 'hmm', clearly considering it for a moment. "You might have a concussion, you know." Sure, Coete wasn't entirely human, but he was human enough that he probably still had that ability. "Would explain why you're foggy on how you got here. Give it a bit, I'm sure it'll clear up." If it was a concussion, he'd slowly remember things. He might never remember exactly what happened, but if he was lucky, he'd remember it all before long.

"Well, you sure as hell look like a dragon." Not that he had any first hand experiences with dragons, but everyone knew what a dragon was supposed to look like. "You'll just... what, slowly turn into a dragon the more you use magic?" Which meant he'd be in an awkward half-state for a good long time.

Coete was entirely unaware of the misunderstanding; when he said 'overboard,' he had been referring to his major mental break and introduction of a minor local ice age and the construction of a new glacier. Being unaware of the break in communication, though, he continued on blithely.

"Why would I have a concussion? I don't remember falling." Well, maybe to his knees. Thinking about it made his heart ache too much, really. "The 'fogginess' is more of a hole in logic. I simply cannot think of a way for me to have travelled here."

Telling him that he looked like a dragon really didn't help Coete much. He knew the shape of a dragon, or at least one particular pollen dragon, but all he could say for himself was that his shape was more human than dragon. His height certainly was.

The summary of the transition was as accurate as he knew his own understanding to be, at least. "Yes. More powerful magic in particular, although the small-scale magic I use nearly constantly now probably has some effect as well."

"Off the boat?" Nicolas offered. People often didn't think you could get a concussion falling overboard, but unless you were lucky, going overboard meant slapping into the side of the boat a lot of the time. "Most people don't remember getting concussions, you know." Not right away.

He wasn't really following all of Coete's logic. No, even that was being generous - he wasn't really following any of it. At the very least he could follow the logic of the whole turning-into-a-dragon thing. That at least made sense to him.

"Makes enough sense. Well, your hands are all scaly and your upper face is too. And you've got like... I dunno. Bumps on your head. Like.." His eyes slid down to the antler at Coete's waste before sliding back up to his head. "Antlers, I would say. So I guess you're not very far into being a dragon."

Plus, he did seem awful young. Even younger than Nicolas himself. "You're like... twenty? Something like that." A student, if he'd been from this world.

.........."Boat? What are you talking about?" Now Coete was really confused. Was there some sort of major language error? Did boat mean something than a sea-faring vessel where Nicolas was from?

He rubbed his head. At any rate, he didn't seem to have any particular bruises or injuries that would explain a concussion, and anyway he was fairly sure he didn't have a concussion. He had just been there and now he was here.

"Something like that," Coete agreed. He'd never really kept track of his age, after all. What would the point have been? "It's been less than a year anyway. Since I started using magic." What he wouldn't give for Lest to see him using magic properly this winter...

Now Nicolas was just as confused as Coete was, although he had no reason to suspect it was some kind of translation error. As far as he knew, they were both speaking in English - the language most of the island seemed to speak.

"The boat. You went overboard?" He volunteered, being forced to wonder just how bad that concussion actually was. Maybe it was getting worse. Maybe Coete was losing his memories for some other reason.

"Mm, You look about twenty or so. A student here, probably still in school, but an adult." Did Coete's world even make those distinctions? Maybe. Or maybe the only thing that mattered was if you did or didn't use magic. If you suddenly got magic when you turned twenty, why would any other magic matter at all?

.............

"Overboard as in overdid. Overextended. Used too much magic. Wore myself out. There were no literal boats involved. The nearest boat was probably a few thousand kilometres away." This was not the time or place to be thinking about the geography of his homeworld - a subject that desperately appreciated eyesight.

A student? Coete knew of schools, but they were for more elevated youth than kennelboys of foreign ex-slave descent. Besides, reading and writing wouldn't exactly serve him all that well.

"I had been a student, though not in a school, at least before... other things intervened. I was more recently a soldier." Of sorts. He wore the uniform and followed the schedule, but orders were strange when mages were involved. "Are you a student of anything?"

Nicolas didn't know how he was supposed to have known that. English wasn't even his first language, and he'd spent years riding around on boats. He let out a little huff, frowning before he realized that Coete couldn't even see his frown.

"No, I'm an adult. I work." He supposed Coete couldn't actually tell he was an adult at a glance. "I was a soldier." Not anymore. It was awfully hard to be a soldier with only one arm, let alone when you were convinced you'd seen something that was completely possible. "So you used so much magic you ended up here?" Somehow that made less sense to Nicolas than him falling overboard and slipping between planets. He already knew that the oceans held all sorts of bizarre stuff.

Coete knew a huff when he heard one; he was blind, not either deaf or clueless. Well, he'd been incredible naïve, once upon a dreamy time. Before reality had crashed in with its frozen, fragile glory to rip his heart and soul into shreds over and over and over.

The thought that they had both been soldiers was... strange. Difficult to process, in a way. Coete was used to there being the side he fought with and the side that fought to strike back against a cruel, idiotic prince's insults. He had never really considered anyone an enemy, not as a nation. He was too aware of his birth nation's crown prince's failings to really blame someone else for war.

He didn't know how Nicolas perceived conflicts. He didn't know if he was used to there being a true "them." Honestly, Coete shared more blood with those he had directly fought against than those he had fought to protect.

"It's the only thing I can think of. I was simply there, and now I am here. I don't need to see this place to know it's impossibly different."
