Mira smiled and began to write. She was startled when she heard the shout and felt the push to the side. She staggered back, feeling her back hit the wall. Her book fell from her hands. She blinked at Abel, who was slipping an eel back into its bag, insisting on taking it home.

Mira rubbed the back of her head, a little sore from hitting the wall. She would have knelt down to retrieve her book, but her eyes were fixed on Abel. He looked...different. When she glanced at his eyes, she saw deep bags. His brown orbs were filled with sadness, exhaustion.... Made Mira wonder what happened to him. What happened to hurt such a good soul like his.

She glanced down at her notebook. If Abel, deciding to be a gentleman, picked it up, he would read the following note. I would love to go back to the Reef. Would you like to c- The last c turning into a huge scribble.

As the more senior staff member carefully took the young eel away to repackage her for transportation, Abel wobbled back to the girl he'd been talking to. "Sorry," he said quietly. "Couldn't let her hit the ground even if she wanted to. I'll talk to her when I get home... help her sort out where she should be..."

He stifled a yawn and winced a bit at the twisting his stomach was doing. Oh, that was her book. Abel crouched to retrieve it but took a moment to stand up again to keep from losing his balance. He had really overdone it today. He didn't want to have to call - and pay for - a cab to get home...

He blinked at the notebook a few times before the letters formed into recognizable words for him. "Would I like to.....? Oh. I. I... can't afford to go right now. And I'm too tired to swim there..."

Abel's lack of energy was definitely apparent, and the comparison between going on a brief errand and swimming halfway around the world was laughable at best.

Mira couldn't help but pout when the man said he couldn't make it to the Reef this time around, but there were bound to be some reefs around this island they could check out. Thanks for saving me by the way, she quickly wrote, glancing at the employee who returned with the properly packaged eel.

What are you going to call it? Then she paused as the eel began to make a fuss about how it wasn't someone's pet to be coddled and how she had her own name. After a quick conversation, Mira smiled and wrote down more. She want's to be called Slinky.

"Hm? Oh. No problem." He'd mostly been going for the eel... saving both was good. Abel yawned, but while he expected it to be a brief yawn it proved otherwise. And kept going until he needed air, since he kind of needed his mouth to breathe when he wasn't in the water.

Well, he breathed through his mouth in the water too. Whatever. He was too tired to think about it too much.

"I can call her whatever she wants," Abel said when he was finally done yawning. "I'll probably just let her settle down and decide where she wants to go anyway. I mean, I'm not going to keep her captive or something." Plus there were some much larger eels in his tank, and even if their territories had grown with the loss of his dear six foot long green moray... well. Territories.

....

"D'you want to see my tank sometime?" he asked, suddenly a bit hesitant.

Mira gave Abel a concerned look. He looked exhausted, like he was going to drop where he stood. Quickly, she wrote him a worried note. Are you okay? Maybe he was sick? Gently, Mira put her hand to his forehead. He didn't seem to have a fever. She bit her lower lip.

Regrabbing her book, she wrote more then showed it to him. You don't have a fever. Are you sick another way? Should I get you some water? Maybe there was someone she could call. He didn't look like normal human tired. It was even worse. Like he was dead but still alive somehow.
