Shikkanuka couldn't help but be excited every October. Even if he was horribly scary all the time, even if he was literally a lot of people's worst nightmares, it was still so wonderfully festive that he couldn't resist. The colours of fall and the costumes and the food and the candy and the sheer energy of so many excited, happy people. It was amazing.

Of course, he didn't really know anyone here, and he was much too shy to go to any of the public parties on his own, but that didn't mean that he couldn't get into the spirit. He still looked young enough to go trick-or-treating, after all, and there were so many yummy things he could make!

Which was why he was in his kitchen, his lower body smeared black with a rough red hourglass on his back, wearing a little pumpkin apron and singing "This is Halloween" while he mixed the batter for his broken glass cupcakes. He'd probably leave a bunch outside his door with a note so that people could eat some without being petrified at his appearance. There was still more than a week before the holiday, so he really wasn't comfortable going out in his black widow getup just yet or ever.

While the cupcakes themselves baked, he threw together some cream cheese and icing sugar for frosting, and then dumped in a bunch of red food colouring with a single drop of blue. That was the easy part, really; he had a pot of solid sugar - well, pure liquid sugar - sitting on the stove that he was obsessively checking. It had to get to exactly the right temperature or it wouldn't be brittle enough to crack - and there it was the thermometer said it was done!

He poured the clear ooze of tempting stickiness onto an oiled pan and carefully tucked it into the freezer to set. It was ready by the time the cupcakes were cooked and cooled and frosted, and then he got to do the really fun part: drop the chilled tray on the counter, hard, and then stab the resulting glasslike shards into the cupcakes. He gave into the spirit of the holiday and cackled devilishly, and then went back to singing while he arranged some on a clean tray and set them outside his door.
