The Deep One

The world beneath the waves was a far cry from the world above of them. Aside from the obvious differences that moving and interacting within water posed, there were numerous smaller changes that added together into a much grander experience. Even though the sun was shining bright above, it could only penetrate so far through the dense waters. The light of the sky was quick to fade with depth. But, just as they were promised to do, the amphibellies adapted the divers' senses and sight to work well in the ocean. Though the light faded, they could still see clear as day. Sounds were richer in the water, as it carried sound waves more efficiently than air, and sounds could be felt as well as heard. Smell was changed to the greatest degree. Scents were a much more subtle occurrence in water, and most of the divers would be unable to smell the delicate changes that Lelei and Analu could. The water was cold, and growing colder as they went deeper, and it was thanks to the amphibellies once again that they could barely feel it.

All in all, diving into the realm of the sea was a visceral experience. Everything felt closer and more intimate as the water clung right to their skin and transmitted everything it held in its global grasp. It was also serene and beautiful in its own right. The water cradled the body, freeing it from some of gravity's hold, which many found relaxing if they took a moment to simply float in the water. The colors of the fish and the corals astounded the eye. The landscape was vast and massive in every way. In the water, creatures could grow huge or thousands could cluster together in a small space. Great canyons and pillars could exist without fear of ever being touched, staying as testaments to an ancient world. This was the world as it had been thousands, millions of years ago.

"Heads up. We're almost there."

Lelei took a sharp dive into a huge canyon and pointed ahead.

Ahead, nestled at the end point of the canyon, were many pinpoints of light, as if they were flying over a city. And indeed, it was a city! As they approached, the lights were coming from a multitude of glowing, floating lanterns littered about a city made of stone and coral. The structures crept outward from a central point along the walls of the canyon and the ground, sprouting upwards and outwards to form the main the buildings. The city seemed more "grown" than built. It was colorful and wondrous, and populated by many other shark people that quickly came into view as they got closer. J

ust like Lelei and Analu, they were humanoid with shark characteristics. Unlike Lelei, however, most seemed to be on the slimmer and lean side, like Analu. Their body types and colors were nicely varied, and obvious since no one wore clothes. They too simply wore jewelry and a variety of accessories draped on their bodies. Tattoos only seemed present on a scant few, and mostly on the ones carrying weapons as they approached.

"Welcoming party is here. Everyone smile and make nice!"

Analu swam out from behind everyone to Lelei's side.

"Don't worry. The weapons are a formality."

The world underwater was far more beautiful than Krystopher had ever thought it would be. The colors, the rocks, even what crystals he had seen so far seemed so alien. Everything he'd seen about the underwater environments had been through a television screen, filmed through the lens of a camera. This was real, how the world really was, and Krys counted himself lucky that he could even take a glimpse at it's true beauty.

In the back of his head, he knew there were a few things that he should have been feeling that he wasn't. For one was the cold, as the sun couldn't reach this far down so there would be very few sources of heat. The pressure at this depth should also have crushed him long ago. He chalked all these changes to the Amphibelly he had taken, also seemingly giving him the ability to see clearly in what should be pitch blackness this far under the surface.

His sense of wonder was suddenly tempered, however, when he saw the other shark people coming towards them. Lelei and Analu's explanation made sense as to the need for weapons, though they were still a bit disarming. Krys had come down to fight and try to rid himself of his timidness and pacifism. He blushed slightly as he realized he still had a far way to go, keeping silent so as to not cause any diplomatic problems by accident.

Eznier was also astounded by the raw beauty found so deep under the ocean. The colors and natural architecture was far different from anything he'd even thought of, never having seen much about the ocean. It managed to draw his eye from Lelei more than he thought it would, though the appearance of the other shark people quickly brought him back. Was the entire race composed of beings the boy had dreamt of at night, part of his deepest desires?

To keep his mind off of accidentally sending any thoughts that could cause problems, Ez focused on just floating still in the water. It was one thing to do so on the surface, doing so this deep felt like he was just hanging in one place without even gravity pulling him. It was a surreal feeling, one he hoped he'd be able to do again one day. He thought that this must be what being in space would feel like, thoughts of travelling to other planets and meeting alien races filling his head as had happened when he was younger.

Berlin

Below the surface, Berlin was just impressed enough to wonder what kind of problems were present down there. She did not suppose that 'A'amakualenalena had been expelled for something so minor, on his own part or not. And until it was proven otherwise, she had to put a tentative trust in the Academy's ability to select instructors. So clearly, Berlin thought, there had to be something very wrong, either with the tribe or with 'A'amakualenalena himself. The former would be typical, the latter would be regrettable. But in either cause, deciding issues was her specialty. She would see what the root of it was eventually.

It was a fact that people intrinsically had it in them to go and thoroughly muck things up time and time again. Humans, demons, shapeshifters, fey, it all made no difference in the end. Look around now. Any person would gladly live in a place like this. Berlin was not blind to beauty, merely disillusioned. Even when nature was at its finest, people would never be able to simply take what was given to them and be happy with it. Always something wrong, always some kind of conflict.

To be honest, she half expected for somebody to tell her that the landscape itself was a trap, or that there was some kind of violent test they would have to go through first to "prove themselves." The possibilities sounded as if they had come straight from a children's story but that did not mean that they did not still happen.

With suspicion, Berlin eyed the weapons that the tribesmen held. They were the primitive sort, the kind that would be usually expected of tribal peoples. Not that it should have made her feel any safer. A knife would always be knife and if a person was skilled enough, even a twig could be used to commit murder.

"So long as those are not point at us I don't believe there should be any immediate problems," she said to their two guides.

Cross could appreciate beauty...whenever he got the chance to see it. See, sometimes he had difficulties following instructions. When everyone was on land and he was given the amphibellie, his canine instincts immediately kicked in and he inspected the little bean by smell. He immediately grimaced, smelling the salty tartness of it. He even played with the little jellybean, wondering just what in the world this thing was made of and how it could do the things it was supposed to do. While everyone wasn't paying attention, he decided to eat up the jelly right away. It could melt, right!?

He swallowed the thing down while everyone was talking...and he could have sworn that someone said something about not eating the thing right away...Something about how this thing had an immediate eff--

HRRRGH--WHEEZE

Needless to say he threw himself into a panic and went to dunk his head in the water...which made immediate contact on a rock. So unlike the rest of everyone that enjoyed all the colorful fish and intricate coral structures, Cross was..kind of in a daze up until they finally met up with Lelei's people. They were...really weird looking to be honest and Cross couldn't help but give a weird stare that shifted from Lelei's bulky mass to the...well limp-noodle kind that he used to tease a certain student about. Interesting, he thought that all shark people looked just as big as Lelei. No, instead they had these stick weapons that looked silly to him. Instead, Cross stood behind the group, trying to look as imposing as possible. Tough look, oh yeah. That was probably better than opening his mouth. His level of diplomacy was most likely worse than Lelei's.

Morgan was amazed at the beautiful world under the sea, she was scared visibility underwater would be an issue, but it looked like the amphibellies made things easier. While swimming along with the rest of her group she watched a few fish swim around, and even watched a beautiful octopus move in and out of some coral. She was a fair bit intimidated by the naked shark men with knives and weapons on them, but felt safer after Lelei told them it was a 'formality', Morgan failed to see how weapons were formal but she recognized that these shark people had a very different culture than her own.

Fortunately for Berlin, none of the approaching guards held their weapons at the ready as they approached. They did, however, start slowly circling the entire group, including Analu and Lelei, in a way that would be familiar to shark movie fans. At this close range, and without being tugged by Lelei, the grace and ease by which this race of people moved through the water became even more evident. Their lithe bodies seemed to move with the slightest pushes of their tails, like ghosts floating through the air. They hardly needed their limbs to maneuver, and were free to carry their weapons and move their heads while their tails carried them along.

Lelei himself brought the group to a gradual stop just beyond the city limits. From there, the students could get a better look at the bustling life within the city, and the shark people therein could get a better look at the students. Small groups of shark people started forming beyond the circling guards, quite obviously intrigued by the presence of humans.

"Just remain calm everyone. You are under my protection, and my responsibility. And these used to be my men."

Lelei crossed his arms over his broad chest and seemed to flex his shoulders and neck intimidatingly at the guard in front of him, who more jewelry then the others, signifying rank. Lelei's gills and jaw moved subtly, indicated by the movements beneath his skin, but the only sounds that came from him was a low rumbling noise that was "felt" more than it was heard. The head guard seemed to be doing the same. Analu put his hands on his hips and watched, before glancing back at the students.

"Probably wondering what's happening, huh? They're talking in our native... tongue, as you would call it. Don't worry, they only said the word 'intruders' once~"

Analu seemed to enjoy teasing the students and went back to listening to the shark conversation. The head guard seemed strict and kept pointing at the students, but Lelei's "talk" would always have the guard standing straight and respectful. After a few moments, the head guards solemnly nodded and motioned to the other guards, whom stopped circling but remained surrounding the group.

"We have the go ahead. They're going to lead us to where we need to go, but everyone needs to remain in the group. No one wanders off, understood?"

"We should be swimming slow enough for any of you to swim on your own, but if you want, Lelei can still tug you along."

"And if you have any questions, ask me. Analu has to leave."

"Yup! You all are no longer my problem, bye~"

And with that, Analu drifted off with a few of the other guards, while the rest started guiding Lelei and the group through the city.

((Feel free to PM me with questions, about anything regarding the city, people, or whatever. I just couldn't fit it all in this post.))

Berlin

"A'amakualenalena," Berlin said crisply, with just a hint of annoyance, "my earlier question?" There was still no clear indication of what anybody expected them to do besides maybe annihilate something. To be honest, if Berlin had not already had a duty to deal with these sorts of situations, she would have already called it quits. The lack of information was, quite frankly, appalling. The current party, as well, seemed ill equipped to deal with any serious threat unless they were planning to talk something to death. It was always concerning to be out of one's element. Even more so when in a company appearing to consist mostly of civilians.

In particular, she had some concerns about the one man who had made a less than graceful dive into the sea, having ignored simple instructions to wait before ingesting the gelatin. At the very least, his survival meant that they now all had a sacrificial lion of sorts. He seemed to be clumsy enough to attract attention, reckless enough to keep it. And large enough to ensure that the rest of them would be well enough protected.

That was, of course, assuming that he did not get them all killed first. Berlin did not put strong faith in things such as luck, but she did believe in trends. And assuming that the trends were correct, she thought that this man, unfortunately, would probably be the best fighter in the group.

No casualties seemed to be a stretch goal, and Berlin was not entirely sure that such a thing suited her purposes anyways. Although, it would make her records a little more appealing.

The shark people began to circle them and...Well it was a good thing he was trying to be as intimidating as possible. It seemed to be working since they weren't coming any closer with their sticks. Maybe these sharks had no idea what to do with humans or things that looked like humans. He was no human; could they sense that too? What could he do? Sure he was a good swimmer, but obviously these guys could swim faster so even if they did jab him with a stick, chances are they would most likely get away with it.

Then he looked at what Lelei was doing. The crossing of the arms, flexing of his muscles...Of course! What was I thinking? He had muscles too! Why was he not using them?! So he crossed his massive arms over that rock hard manly chest and flexed. Biceps tensed, pectorals twitched, and his face drawn into the most intense expression he could muster. Nobody was going to mess with him! He couldn't do the strange thing that Lelei was doing with his gills because wolves didn't have gills obviously. So a low growl rumbled from his chest. Some of the shark people noticed this and gave him a weird look which made him feel...Stupid.

He furrowed a mighty brow at him much like a certain wrestler would do on T.V.. Sadly, this wasn't an opportunity where he asked the general public if they could smell what the mighty Cross was cooking. "What are they even saying?" he asked the group. Luckily the obnoxious Analu decided to answer. What an asshole. He had been rude the entire trip..Or at least Cross was assuming he was since he couldn't remember how they got here. Oh well. He'd be jealous too if he were built like a sardine.

Speaking of builds, he just could not get over the fact that these people were so...so...free. Everything was out in the open. Everything. Cross couldn't help but stare and even 'compare' himself to them. Yes, with everything. He looked 'down there', then at his own crotch. There. Crotch. There. Crotch. There-- he snorted with a confident smirk. "Hue. I'm good. I'm the best." He said and laughed proudly as they were guided through the underwater city.

Morgan was very fascinated with the underwater city and tried to take in as much as she could, while still paying attention to Lelei and her other shark guide. The language the shark people used was just as fascinating, it looked like Lelei the larger shark man was sending vibrations through the water to the other. The large muscly man who had joined them stood next to Lelei and flexed his muscles as if to intimidate the shark people, he was certainly impressive but he was nothing compared to the love of Morgans life, her darling Naoki from her favorite game "Ninja love adventure: Can you recall it?" She swooned a little from thinking about him, but quickly regained her composure. Morgan was still curios as to what exactly they were going up against, but opted to stay quite as shed find out eventually.

"Apologies. I nearly forgot about your inquiry."

Lelei slowed his swimming down enough that he could be closer to the group, and Berlin. He heaved a gentle sigh and looked over at Berlin and some of the other students, somewhat apologetically.

"I've requested your presence...s because I need help in quelling the Deep One, an ancient trench beast that my kind has both feared and admired for as long as we can remember."

Just at the mention of the Deep One, a few of the bystanders following the group out of curiosity stopped and swam away nervously.

"We consider it to be the ultimate Alpha predator, and we are its lineage, as are the many feral sharks that swim in the oceans. Though we idolize it in a manner similar to your surface progenitor Adam, we also see it as the only thing that can see US as prey. This balance of praise and dread is central to our way of life down here, where the ocean is a much less forgiving world than the surface.

The balance only held true so long as the Deep One remained in its slumber in the trench, and that leads to now.

There have been signs that the Deep One is stirring, and my people are in fear of becoming prey..."

The architecture of the city changed as they swam further inward. The buildings become more crowded and dense as the walls of the canyon began to converge. Where they met, a large and impressive arch was carved into the wall, depicting coral and plants at the bottom, fish and sharks going upward. The keystone of the arch was a humanoid figure with a tentacled face.

As they passed under the arch, the group entered a cavernous cave beneath the ocean floor where even more buildings were located, built directly into the walls. The lights in this area were brighter and more dazzling with varied colors.

"My people have never known much of fear, for as are Alphas ourselves. So most are paralyzed by the very idea of the Deep One awakening. Which is why they called me.

I'm the only one who has even come close to seeing the Deep One in recent memory. I've faced fear itself in the eyes of my people... But it's what drove me to... to what to seek the... comfort that got me exiled to the surface."

Lelei looked a little regretful admitting that to everyone.

"But they are still too scared to face the Deep One, so they called me. The see me as fearless and as expendable. I need your help because I can't do it alone."
