Sickly, but still managing to strike a strong silhouette, Val is very obviously unhealthy-- something he couldn't hide if he wanted to, and doesn't attempt to. He sometimes looks and feels as though he's right on the edge of dying, and in all honesty, he doesn't care. It's the way things are. He takes his time to be spiteful towards it when he's alone, and otherwise, maintains his pride. Val is too thin, too pale, too stiff. Like a dead man walking, but still somehow classified as human. He's five feet nine inches tall, and severely underweight. Bony, not soft. He has a keen resemblance to a skeleton, in particular, rather than just a corpse.

Val has dark, though crystal clear reddish eyes, that are stunningly cold. As a child, he'd brought maids to tears with his eyes, simply by looking at them. Usually, they're covered by his tinted (for light sensitivity purposes) browline glasses. His ears are pierced. His hair is dyed a pure, clean white, resembling snow or a stark hospital room. With a pointed face and nose, while Val is no doubt an attractive man, it's all sharp, no comfort.

He has nice, expensive clothes, favoring things like cardigans, button ups, and turtlenecks for casual settings, but is most often found in professional and formal outfits, dolled up in suits and trenchcoats. He wears big coats, scarves, and a lot of layers when it's extra cold, though never quite loses his skeletal look. He favors blacks, whites, grays, and blues for his wardrobe and is rarely seen in anything else. If he wears patterns, they're clean, symmetrical, and not overdone. She's far more expressive when female, adding in a preference for purple and cuter outfits. She adores dresses and very feminine things, and can be more flexible with patterns. Her main aesthetic is a witchy one. When male, Valentine can sometimes be seen highlighting his warlock heritage stylistically, but usually goes businessman over that.

When male more than while female, Val carries and uses a fancy black cane, which is engraved with pretty decorative patterns. It isn't overly magical or special in any particular sense, but helps him feel more comfortable and confident when getting around, and looks quite stylish. Along with his white hair and sickliness, it can add to him being mistaken for being older, and he can't say he minds that, highly disliking his own young age. This cane isn't magical or special, as was mentioned, but it can absolutely be used for thwacking people, when the need calls. It's tough and built for being weaponized along with practical, but not impossible to break, as it's currently just a simple cane.

Val gives off a respectable, but intimidating vibe from his own personality, separate from his reeking of death. He looks like a guy you shouldn't screw with, not from anything like a thuggish appearance, but a calculatingly dangerous one. Just a bit off. Someone who'd draw you away from a crowd and take you somewhere dark. Quietly, calmly. He's more subtle in this, not obnoxious, not an uncivilized brute.

Despite his icy and reserved leaning nature, he does make an effort to be diplomatic and polite, and interacting with him can be a treat in certain settings. He's a lot less unwelcoming than he used to be.

Personality Description

Valentine has grown a lot in a short amount of time. He's still a very reserved and critical man, but he's also a romantic, sentimental and passionate about those close to him and his life pursuits. The moody, constantly unpleasant persona he clung to throughout his childhood is far gone, and not returning. It's still sore and recent for him, but he's changed for the better.

Valentine does not normally have the capability to feel empathy or sympathy. This, he cannot control, and does not do on purpose or with malicious intent, it's simply the way he is and was born. When he was young he was very frustrated with his own inability to understand certain things he was expected to grasp instantly, and felt very shamed for it. Usually, when others had an unhappy reaction to something he did, he simply hid it from them from then on instead of stopping. He learned to live up to certain negative expectations, and grew into his role.

Now, however, he has a strong sense of decency and standards, and cares deeply about keeping overall order and benevolence in a community. He uses his objective, impersonal way of processing things to make smart decisions that can benefit the majority, and can make well planned (he's very analytical, a cautious and settled presence), worthwhile sacrifices. He even appreciates those who are naturally kinder than him, and what they can bring to life- rather than being confused, or outright angry towards them.

Valentine is an erudite, scholarly type that specializes in dark magic- necromancy in particular- and politics. He's recently graduated college, and is eventually hoping for a position as a Manta Carlos minister- and within that, he truly wants to help and be worthy of that status (even if some of his methods may be shady, it's the end result that matters, and he makes it count).

His second big goal is to bring the spark of magic and tradition back into his family, be a proper magical heir, even if his brother Clarence is destined to be head of house and the main business heir. They can coexist and even make the family stronger by working together, rather than fighting.

The third ambition and one which ties into the other two is to be the best representation of Death he can, and something special, important, even if not fitting a lot of the stereotypical tropes for it. He's not a reaper, but he is an agent of authority, change (death leads to new beginnings), and knowledge. He wishes to use that, and everything he has, to his advantage. Success isn't a gift, it's a requirement.

Val likes mental challenges, morbid things/humor, and art. He adores taking in creative things a great deal, because it's something others put their souls into, and one of the few things he can honestly feel from. He favors limited palettes and careful symbolism in his own art, as well as heavily dramatic, dark, and detailed pieces. His favorite art movement is Romanticism. He's also a chocoholic, known for being obsessed with chocolate, which tends to amuse people.

While he's far better than he used to be, Valentine's morals aren't pure and (as he would put it) naive. He absolutely leans towards darker things, and has a talent for manipulation. He doesn't regret his actions (though if he feels he's made a mistake, he'll make up for it, within reason), and guilt is rare- usually reserved for special people. He doesn't go out of his way to cause unnecessary suffering anymore, but he also won't cringe away from it (or deny enjoying it). In short, he's ruthless, but unlike some, he has tact. As an antagonistic presence, he's very high class.

Valentine likes it when things mean something, and is very deliberate. He doesn't do much casually.

Powers/Species traits

Death, horseman of the apocalypse

Dead man walking

Val was born on the thinnest possible line between life and death. This means he's always terribly sick and in various amounts of pain, but also means a lot of times when he could've officially died, he hasn't. Forces that be just looked him over, because it seemed like he was already dead. He just flies right under the radar. In all honesty, he should be dead, a million times over. At times he's even tried to kill himself, but it's simply ended in even more pain and a sense of disappointment. Not your typical invulnerability, more like a curse to live through any pain thrown at you. Still, even while Val will feel all the results, he won't die. Not officially. He won't live, either.

Val has an aura that reflects all this, and his Apocalypse Horseman status.

Death Affinity

Self explanatory. Val has heavy natural power in death related magical pursuits and related things. His specialization is necromancy, a subject he's always experimenting with and is invested in it on both a personal and intellectual level.

Val has the best chance at bringing back something recently dead to their previous state, and from then on they'd have to eat the flesh of living creatures to retain their own consciousness and sense of self. He can make sentient zombies, basically. The artful part of it is not that they're truly weapons, but that they can still be close to what they were, even if it is a miserable existence (to some, that is). While they can die on their own by not feeding, Val can also turn them back off again himself, just like he turned them on. Val's own brother is his longest experiment with necromancy. For the purposes of keeping people the way they were before, at least mentally, including personally relevant items in the ritual usually helps.

Val could and has brought back things that have been dead for a long while, but it takes more time and effort, usually involving bigger rituals. Older things, or things Val is less personally familiar with, are usually a little less themselves.

Val can also bring things back without their sentience, for combat purposes or to get something else done. A lot of these can be brought up without any rituals involved if they're the weaker simpler sort, and they're not made to last, they're made to get jobs done.

Warlock

Pain Empathy
Not only does seeing others suffering make it easier for Val to understand and relate to them, it quite literally can let him touch them and get bits a pieces of who they are, their feelings, etc. He can't try to get specific things from them, it's usually what's strongest/most important/what's at the front of their mind that he gets. Pain and death brings it out, and really, the more messed up a state they're in, the more he feels.

Ancient Family Gifts

Born to a well known, very old, rich with both money and magic family, Val has what he's expected to have. Between him and his twin, something happened, and Val got all the magic while his brother was left with nothing. It's overwhelming, due to that. His magic carries the mark and taste of his family, the refinement carefully molded and bred over generations. It's slower and heavier than some newer, fresher magic, but powerful, and some traditions exist for a reason.

Biography

tw child abuse, homophobia, transphobia, murder, and tom's old writing
The twins Valentine and Clarence Crowther were born on the island, in their family's mansion. They quickly had to be separated, as Val's death energy had almost killed both newborn Clarence and their mother- who had been growing sicker and sicker for the months up to their birth. Val was taken away, while Clarence and their mother were kept together and healed. There were attempts to heal Val as well, but those failed, and it was thought that the child wasn't going to last more than a few hours.

Valentine lasted, though his state of health didn't change. Those around him had their opinions settle into something else. This child is cursed, this child is dangerous, this child is powerful.

This child is always going to suffer, and cause suffering around him.

Valentine's early childhood was a strange mix of being over protected/watched, and completely avoided and left to his own devices- depending on who he was around and how healthy he could fake being that day. He spent a lot of time experimenting with his magic, bringing dead animals back to life or playing around with them, messing with servants and his brother, or having others attempt to kill him.

He also spent a lot of time reading and studying, as it was one of the few things he could do and really be any good at besides death magic. He was largely self taught, partially due to his independence in mental areas, partially due to tutors not wanting to go near him and get sick. He was given personal lessons from his father in the areas of etiquette and magic, and had early access to his father's personal library and study.

Valentine was favored by his father, while his brother Clarence was favored by their mother. While Val was never aware of this, his father had wanted their mother to keep away from Val because he thought Val was better suited to being dealt with and trained by him. He didn't know, and only felt quietly bitter, then indifferent, towards her.

Clarence tried a great deal to get attention from their father, but was snubbed due to being completely without magical talent. Val received all the magical expertise, while Clarence was the child who was actually out socializing and in the public spotlight. It was largely kept secret that Clarence didn't have any magic, and not too odd seeing the Crowther family was already very private. Clarence made up for it by knowing all the right people to suck up to, and bringing a new spark and energy to their family name.

As teenagers, both Clarence and Val were angering their father. Clarence was messing with other men, a bit of a problem for a heir to a very old and traditional family like theirs. It would be fine if it was just playing, but Clarence seemed to be increasingly smitten with the idea of love, and uncomfortable with the idea of a planned female fiance. Val, on the other hand, was for the most part still perfectly cozy with girls, but sometimes as a girl herself- and definitely not quietly like Clarence.

Val's disinterest in being emotionally involved with others wasn't a benefit, either. Val was all too cold and independent, and Clarence was all too soft and dependent. They were two sides of extremes.

Their father told Val that he was going to get rid of Clarence's lover. Val told Clarence, knowing the other boy would try to stop it, and feeling very curious as to what would happen.

Clarence ended up dead, and Val ended up bringing him back. Half back. Just like Val, almost. He related to Clarence more then than he ever had before.

Although it was all kept very under wraps and hushed up, their father disappeared. The only reason given out was that it was related to 'private family matters', but was seen as quite a scandal. Although they don't know for sure, the two siblings themselves suspected that their mother did something to their father. What that something even was is just as unknown, but she had been unhappy with the man for years, and Clarence's death was a breaking point, something to open the floodgates.

He was the one that married into the family, not her. It was only fair. Their mother wasn't all that fond of arranged marriages either. They had caused enough problems for both her and her children.

Since that man disappeared, their family's name and power has been raising up to its former glory again, elegant and assured of their power, not desperate for it.

In more recent personal development, Valentine tried to ruin an intensely vulnerable man named Jack. Jack only welcomed that suffering, was open and attracted, which drew Val in- but there was something else about him and their interactions that caused Val to break.

Break, then put himself back together again, into something far better. Less cruel, less alone, and very in love for the first time in his life, something everyone (including himself) assumed he was incapable of.

Between his beloved Jack, a few other relevant relationships, and gradually improving his damaged familial bonds, he's a lot stronger with sentiment than without it. It doesn't make you weak, like he'd believed, and he's actually happy. Truly happy and safe feeling, something he's still getting used to. Now, he's stubbornly working towards his personal ambitions, and is very determined to do and be his best.

Additional Information

The symptoms of Valentine's illness include a lot of chronic pain, migraines, weak stomach, fatigue, light sensitivity, a bad immune system, and a trainwreck of other things. None of Val's illness is ever faked, but one shouldn't underestimate him for it.

Although he's settled down with this, his childhood was full of very public rumors and infamy, and in his teen years it wasn't uncommon gossip that he'd choose individuals to mentally break and manipulate. He's been an outcast within the general public and his own family for the entire first half of his life, and is starting to change that. His demeanor has adjusted and he's eager to prove himself, but his past is extremely questionable-- he can't remove that from public record, even if he wanted to. The Crowthers are a very important, old Manta Carlos family, and Valentine's reputation in particular was a point of morbid fascination for most.

He's defiantly making efforts to show himself as reputable despite that. In fact, it even spurs him on, he won't try to hide what he was before, he'll shine brighter for it. He knows he's meant to make a difference, both magically and in the government of his cherished city, and perhaps most importantly, for the people he loves.
