Appearance Description

Art by me!

Art by @Poppy!

Clarence usually appears annoyingly overconfident, and tries to live up to the trope he fits in to. His clothes are expensive, but with casually stylish leanings. In your face about not being in your face, or something like that.

Clarence is five feet ten inches tall, lean and fit, long legs, and attractive angular Crowther facial features-- but he has quite a boyish look that clings to him, in his face as well as behavior. Clarence usually has a smug expression of some sort on his face, just as a default.

Clarence has reddish-brown hair that shines golden in some lights, and similarly colored eyes. Clarence has subtly sharper teeth than an ordinary human, that tend to get sharper when he's hungrier. To go along with that, if he goes too long without eating something live, his skin will get colder and less healthy, and his eyes will turn a foggy grey-red. He's both more dangerous and more dead in a state like this.

Clarence has scar on lower and right side of his chest, at his ribs and through to his back, from the bullet that killed him.

Personality Description

Clarence tries too hard at everything. Tries to appear to be in charge and dominant, tries to seem like he doesn't badly need help, tries to seem like half the time he isn't going to start crying on the spot.

Clarence puts on quite an act. It isn't all an act, of course- some of it does come naturally, but he really overdoes it in an effort to cover certain other things up. Snotty little rich boy. Acts like everyone's out to get him, is very touchy and easily tormented. So, so very needy. Needy for attention and help and affection. Always trying to distract himself, build himself up, and kick others down before they can get to him first.

Clarence is a huge crybaby in secret, always thinking things over for hours upon end in the middle of the night when alone, and very mentally screwed up. Everything's just too much, all the damn time. God. Thoughts, they're just a mix between apologies and threats and desperation. Clarence Crowther is not okay. He doesn't know how to let anyone fix it, how they'd get past his act and his damn mouth that just won't shut up. Clarence is a master of self sabotage, and has a tendency of pushing at people to test if they really care about him. If they'll still care about him even if he says something shitty and bad. If they'll still care about him if he has a breakdown.

Clarence, when in serious business/professional/host/the one responsible person mode, is a master of being subtle, putting on acts, looking confident, lying, and calmly taking care of things. He wishes he could stay in that mode permanently. Clarence takes an intense amount of pride in being a Crowther heir, and living up to it as best as he possibly can. It's his life, completely. Clarence tires very quickly of other kids from powerful families not taking who they are seriously. He doesn't mind people getting away from their families for good, personal reasons, but those who scorn every high society type out there? Not impressive. He thinks people get too much credit for rebelling, even when some work harder at staying. He worked hard. Really, really hard.

Clarence feels a lot of guilt and stress over the fact that he has to eat things alive to stay himself. That he's a monster. That sometimes he likes it, that sometimes he looks at a person and sees a hunk of walking meat.

Clarence Crowther is not okay. He's not quite a good person, but he isn't a purely evil one either. He can be mean, fucked up, and a broken coward, but he isn't evil. He's just... not okay.

Powers/Species traits

Inhuman

Clarence is an undead, and while that isn't always all that glamorous, it comes with a few perks. Clarence has some enhanced versions of normal abilities, like strength and sense of smell in particular (but not limited to those things).

Clarence can feel it, but physical pain is decently numbed for him, and you can tear into his flesh without doing much. Like the usual zombies, his head is his weak point, but unlike usual zombies, with time his sibling and necromancer Val could put him back together again. But that's certainly the way to put him out of commision for a while.

Hunger

Clarence can heal very quickly by eating things while they're still alive and kicking, though there's certainly nothing subtle about this.

In a more hungry, desperate, and near zombified state, he's more distractible/overly focused- but even stronger than usual. More of a monster in both action and appearance.

Biography

The twins Clarence and Valentine Crowther were born on the island, in their family's mansion. They quickly had to be separated, as Val's death energy had almost killed both newborn Clarence and their mother- who had been growing sicker and sicker for the months up to their birth. Val was taken away, while Clarence and their mother were kept together and healed.

Although Clarence himself doesn't remember it, the fact that his sibling had almost killed him when they were born was never kept a secret. Especially seeing that the whole thing left Clarence completely without any magical ability, in an old family that was known for their magic. Family and close servants were the only ones that knew. From a lot of them, he got pity. From his father, disappointment, or even complete disregard.

Clarence was ordinary, and Valentine was extraordinarily powerful- in the area of death magic, and at a price. Valentine was cursed to always be sick, and his gifts weren't too socially accepted in the end either. It didn't stop Clarence from being jealous.

Clarence spent his early childhood learning to be, outside of his lack of magic, the perfect heir and poster boy for his family name. Clarence got a great education from his mother on being a good host- charming influential guests, serving good food and drinks (or having an eye for the best caterers), decorating and dressing well, and just all around throwing a damn badass bash. These teachings went on all through Clarence's life. Clarence can really do well when in entertainer mode, and is very good with upper class awareness and etiquette, due to all this- and hell if he doesn't have great posture. Clarence avoided his sibling Val whenever possible, a mix of jealous and afraid of him. Clarence went to Starlight for schooling for all his life, and is well known there by people of all ages.

Clarence was favored by his mother and had a very strong bond with her, while his brother Valentine was favored by their father. Clarence spent a lot of time trying to get his father's attention, respect, and love, to no avail.

Clarence tried a great deal to get something, anything, from their father, but was snubbed due to being completely without magical talent. Val received all the magical expertise from their dad, while Clarence was the child who was actually out socializing and in the public spotlight. It was completely kept secret that Clarence didn't have any magic, and not too odd seeing the Crowther family was already very private. Clarence made up for it by knowing all the right people to suck up to, and bringing a new spark and energy to their family name.

As teenagers, both Clarence and Val were angering their father. Clarence was experimenting with other men, a bit of a problem for a heir to a very old and traditional family like theirs. It would be fine if it was just playing, but Clarence was increasingly smitten with the idea of love, and increasingly uncomfortable with the idea of a planned female fiance. Val on the other hand, was for the most part still perfectly cozy with girls, but sometimes as a girl herself, and definitely not quietly like Clarence. Another thing for Clarence to be jealous of, that lack of fear.

Val was all too cold and independant, and Clarence was all too soft and dependant.

It all had to lead up to something, and finally, in their late teens, it did. Clarence had been in a secret, but committed (at least on Clarence's end) relationship with a boy for quite a while. It wasn't destined to stay a secret, and really, his father had probably known for a while. How it was discovered, nobody would ever know. A servant could've told on them, or something far worse, the man had seen them together himself. Maybe they'd given each other looks in public one too many times, hadn't been careful enough. His father had been getting more and more angry, Clarence had been getting more and more panicked inside, everything ready to burst.

Clarence's sibling Val, knowing Clarence would try to stop it (and maliciously encouraging it), told the boy that their father was planning to get rid of Clarence's lover.

Clarence ended up dead, and Val ended up bringing him back. Half back. Just like Val, almost. A necromancer's experiment, and doomed to have to eat the flesh of the living to stay himself.

At least he was less ordinary now than he'd been before, right? Right?

Although it was all kept very under wraps and hushed up, their father disappeared. The only reason given out was that it was related to 'private family matters', but was seen as quite a scandal. Although they don't know for sure, the two siblings themselves suspected that their mother did something to their father. What that something even was is just as unknown, but she had been unhappy with the man for years.

He was the one that married into the family, not her. It was only fair. Their mother wasn't all that fond of arranged marriages either. They had caused enough problems for both her and her children.

Since he disappeared, their family's name and power has been raising up to its former glory again, elegant and assured of their power, not desperate for it.

Family Members

Valentine 'Val' Crowther, twin sibling, doing... better.

Alva Crowther, mother, doing well and head of household. Clarence is very attached to his mother, though started keeping things from her as he grew older and more messed up. He knows she loves him, but doesn't want to be a burden on her.

Julius Crowther, father, status unknown. Clarence spent so much time trying to get his attention, live up to any expectations he could, make up for not being able to do anything magical- but then completely clashed with the man as a teenager. And was literally murdered by him. Clarence's relationship with his father fucked him up a lot, and he has rather a mix of insecure self-blaming and hateful thoughts towards him.

Extra

Worst Memory: Dying, not the being shot part, but the slow bleeding out with nobody to help him. Being brought back to life, covered in his own blood and on top of his twin's desk, cold and scared and back in the worst possible way, as his twin's experiment. Realizing his boyfriend had left him, and wasn't coming back, even when his father wasn't around anymore and it was clear Clarence was back. A lot of little things involving his father, and now, any memories of his first boyfriend seeing they'd all been poisoned with Clarence's new lack of naivety.

Best Memory: Time spent with his mother. Finally feeling like he'd made a name for himself. Putting on his first big party, and having everything go perfectly.

Likes: Lei. People looking at him when he's putting on the right kind of show, and is in control. Praise. Throwing money around, tipping especially. Being idolized. Influencing people. Nice, expensive things. Putting on parties. Going all out. Distractions, like loud music that drowns everything else out.

Dislikes: People looking at him when he isn't putting on the right kind of show, and is losing control. His own off the chart anxiety levels. People who are shitty to the staff of anything ever. The fact that he'd (or he at least believes) be worthless without his status and money. People assuming he's bad and demonizing just for being proud of his family, rather than all the other reasons they could dislike him.

Weaknesses: Self sabotage from just being him. Second hand embarrassment.

Strengths: Throwing money at things until they leave him alone. Being very, very stubborn.

Fears: A lot of things. Getting completely outed as gay. People knowing how messed up he is. Permanent death. Being found out as undead.

Habits/Hobbies: Lecturing people. Rambling about high society information/strategy/proper ways of doing things. Throwing parties. Feeling second hand embarrassment about things. Making inside jokes in his own head about his undead status. Getting flustered. Calling people he likes nerds. Threatening to call lawyers on people. Threatening to shove people in lockers, and often being at least half serious. Paying for things. Showing off. Cooking.

Skills / Talents: All that high society heir knowledge, awareness, comfort, and style. Party planning, and then keeping order at events.

Additional Information

Clarence has generalized anxiety and post traumatic stress disorder. He's an emotional abuse survivor from his father and twin. He will show intense discomfort at parents yelling at their children, saying cruel things to them, and punishing them.

Even if they haven't personally met him or been to one of his parties, people in the school and island should be at least vaguely aware of Clarence's existence and reputation, or at least his family's. They're old magic, old money, and have plenty of connections.

Speaking of parties. Clarence has hosted huge parties at his family's mansion for years, wild bashes and formal events alike. Your character might have even been to one once, it wouldn't be unlikely. Over everything, Clarence is at least known for this much. He spends a lot of time in public spotlight and the social scene in general. Not seeing him at parties and such is weirder than anything else. He's out and about a lot, as well, and is usually involved in bold attention catching things.

Whether it's a good, bad, or an 'ugh I wish people didn't make such a fuss over that jackass' kind of thing- people usually have a preconceived opinion of Clarence. Even if they're the less judgmental type, it's simply hard to avoid.
