Na Lan Tai Hu

"It is correct in the western way," Na Lan assured her. "Do not trouble yourself with trying to reproduce the sounds exactly. It really is not that important of a matter. 'Na Lan' is a surname of sorts but it is more of a proper name than 'Tai Hu' is, so I would more prefer to use it."

He did pause a little when Max asked him her question. "I suppose it is rather quiet by human standards," the spirit responded. "It is a drifting sort of existence, one that is normally confined to the same pools. There are others, of course, but we are quite used to each other and pay each other not too much mind. It is comforting in a way, although it is not a life suited for most. The pace is slow and if I were to truly sleep, I may not wake up until the next century."

"I would like to sleep that long and start over when I wake up," Max declared, almost wistful. The idea of a time skip was massively appealing to her. If she managed to sleep that long, maybe when she woke up there would be a better world in wait, where she could start over. Fleetingly, a vision of a different world played around in her imagination. She turned to her side to look at Na Lan, and then she thought again. "...maybe not."

There were so many things to ask that Max simply couldn't speak, not knowing what to go for first. Instead, she held her tongue, waiting for him to talk. Surely it would be rude to keep asking and asking. Maybe he didn't like it and simply didn't say out of manners. All-too-familiar feelings of insecurity crept in, even if outwardly she didn't display anything. Was he earnest about his intention to accompany and lead her, or was he doing it for the sake of politeness?

How nice it would have been to know.

Na Lan Tai Hu

"It is always a sad thing to have to part with others you have met," Na Lan remarked, looking back at Max calmly. Certainly, there had been many scholars with whom he would have liked to share a few more words. As the people that he knew became less and less, the world seemed more and more empty. It was a grand illusion, he knew, but the sentiment was much the same.

"That said, the opportunity to meet many new people is always an uplifting thought. A new start is always daunting but that does not mean one should merely give up." Spirits lived for a very long time, after all. What would it mean for him if he were to simply give up?

He was leading them now to a cafe nearby the school. Na Lan had been there a few times before, with one of the photography teachers -a Japanese man named Kitasaki. It might have been more popular with the student body if it hadn't been so unassumingly and put onto the second floor of a strip. Still, it was fairly regularly visited by a small crowd and had a rather decent atmosphere.

@"Emy"

"Not for me," Max said. "I'm confused by new things. I like them and I'm scared of them... I don't even know how to actually interact with the unfamiliar. I've thought about it in the past, and it's always there, whether it's new people, new things, or new places... I want them but I can't get rid of my doubt."

Crippling doubt had long characterized much of Max's life. It was either that or resignation that ruled her, and in those few in-between moments were the times that she had experiences such as these.

Heading to a cafe with a friend was yet another of these new experiences. A small nagging voice inside told her not to think of the word "friend" without knowing whether the label was mutual, which was hard to know. The voice was drowned out almost instantly by her cocktail of curiosity and hesitation.

She knew that hesitation would not lead anywhere. So she instead drew a deep breath and stepped inside.

A small sense of accomplishment filled her upon that first step, followed immediately by the deflating realization that she'd no idea what to do next. "What happens now?"

Na Lan Tai Hu

"Now?" Na Lan turned to look at Max, tilting his head slightly towards the rest of the cafe. "I suppose, whatever happens next is up to you." That was not to say, however, that he meant to simply leave her there and leave her to fend for herself. It would have been rather cruel to do so in his opinion. The spirit did think, however, about how unfortunate it was that her self-confidence was so low. There was an entire world waiting for her not so far away and it would be sad to see her so confined as Na Lan was.

There was a table in the corner which the spirit made his way to, one with a clear view of the door without being too out in the open. Because it was polite, he took the seat that would leave his back facing the door and gestured to the other, indicating that Max ought to sit there. Menus were on the table, although Na Lan made no move to look at any of them. All that he could really tolerate were liquids, after all. Tea and water in particular, while the rest were not too recommended.

"Take as you would like," he said to her.

"I don't know what to do," Max confessed, looking around and trying to find a pattern she could meld herself into. The first thing she observed that didn't increase her doubt in herself was that everyone present seemed to be sitting down. Cautiously, she walked in and sat down, straightening out her dress. At the very least, she didn't seem underdressed or anything.

Na Lan seemed to know exactly what he was meant to do in such a place, and Max was about to ask for help, but the fear that her over-reliance on him might drive him away silenced her tongue. Instead, she looked around again, observing. There were drinks on the tables of the other people. And in some cases, tiny cakes. This place was a store then?

It would appear so, considering the menu she noticed. Well within her price range - not because she was wealthy or anything; she just very rarely spent on things. She looked down at the menu, and then back at Na Lan. "I've never tried anything here... what would you... recommend?"

Na Lan Tai Hu

"Ah, now that would be a question." The spirit glanced at the menus for a moment. They all had pictures of what the cafe ordered, which was fortunate because the actual names of items were constantly slipping his mind. "My kind do not require this sort of sustenance so I cannot give a personal recommendation on anything besides the tea. However, if you do not mind, I could tell you what I have seen others order."

"People seem to be quite fond of the third page," Na Lan said. "Most of the people currently in here seem to have selected from that. If you are fond of sweets, you may like that. If not, then I am told that the sandwiches are quite good."

He wondered, not for the first time, what food actually was like to people who could eat it. Maybe it was the same as water was to him, only much more solid and of course uninhabitable. Putting it in that way, however, still did not quite make him feel like he understood it.

"You do not... eat?" Max's question of food was displaced immediately by the revelation. Even she, in all her forgetfulness, could never quite forget the urge to eat. There were times in the past when she would go to sleep hungry because her parents neglected to buy food, and there were times that she would simply try to stave it away with a dream.

What could it be like, living without food? Her first thought was that it had to be some sort of deceit, and yet she couldn't bring herself to doubt him. She set aside the menu first, her curiosity set aflame. "How does it feel? Are you hungry, or do you never experience hunger?"

The thought of never being hungry seemed like a good thing. It also reminded her that in a while, she would feel hunger herself, and she meekly took the menu back to look. Nothing sweet - they were good but they hurt her throat. Instead, she began to peruse through the sandwiches at his recommendation.

Na Lan Tai Hu

"I am mainly composed of water and magic," Na Lan told the girl. "As long as I maintain a decent amount of freshwater, I will remain in relatively good health." As good as the pollution in his lake would allow for, in any case. He tried not to think of it too often but with the constant empathetic connection, it was not an easy task.

"Hunger as you know it is not an issue for me," he said peaceably. "Although I do feel strong compulsions to seek out sources of freshwater periodically. It is rather hard to find lakes of good quality these days. Fortunately, the one at the Academy is very well kept. Perhaps one day, I will find one not nearly so crowded."

Max would have pressed forth with her questions, but staff seemed to notice their existence and their lack of consumption, drawing close. When they asked for the order, she hung for a bit, staring unresponsively, until she remembered what exactly that meant. She lowered her head in apology and then placed an order for two sandwiches and a cup of tea.

Her head slowly turned to face her company, a little warmer and redder than it normally was, even if she didn't notice it. She asked sheepishly, "Do... do you want anything to drink?" once she realized that she hadn't placed an order for Na Lan, and was currently being selfish.
