The forest was calm, the silence only interrupted by the occasional song of a bird or the soft murmur of the wind as it moved the leaves. In one of the darkest parts of the forest a singular pack of raptors were resting after their meal. It has been a while since they last ate, so it was obvious that they didn’t left a single piece of meat in the carcass or a single bone without breaking to get the tasty marrow inside. It wasn’t their fault that they had to eat like this, they had no idea of when their next meal was going to be, so they had to take every single bit of meat they could eat before any other predator could try to steal the carcass away or the meat started to rot.

They has stablished a small temporary base in a rocky area. Mostly to take a quick nap while they digested and recovered their strength. Some broken bones scattered around the area. The smell of fresh blood was still present in the area, since they had finished eating only a minute or two ago, but take for sure it wasn’t coming from them, they had cleaned themselves up as soon as they were full.

Raptor was the only one that wasn’t enjoying of the soft embrace of sleep…though saying that he wasn’t tempted to just let himself fall asleep with the rest of his pack wasn’t the most tempting idea for him in that specific moment. He was diligently watching over them, listening to every sound that his ears could hear and paying close attention to the scents that the wind brought to his sharp nose. He was the alpha, he had to protect them with his own life if it was necessary, and he wasn’t going to let them down.

It was then when he heard them, the heavy steps going straight towards them, and the wind brought an unknown smell to his nose. His instinct immediately reacted to this, making him stand up and go into an alert position, letting out a high-pitched mix of a chirp and a roar, which mixed with the link he had with them was more than enough to make the rest of his pack wake up and get on their feet, returning the sound to let him know that they all had awaken and were just as alert as him.

The alert sounds soon turned into threatening ones, obviously in an attempt to force whatever creature was coming towards them to turn around and leave before it came too close. It obviously was bigger, but numbers weren’t in its favor. Anyone that knew about the subject would immediately know that they were walking straight towards a pack of raptors that was far from being happy with their presence.

Someone was eating things. Well, technically speaking, almost all living things ate other things to keep going, but something specifically was eating large animals, and picking the bones clean.

It was not his business. He was not a park ranger who was going to go galavanting through the woods. But he was curious, and it was time for his weekly trip into the woods anyway, so he made a point of finding some freshly cleaned bones before shifting.

Once he was fully sized, it wasn't hard to follow the trail. He could smell the blood, and he made no attempt to hide his presence as he followed the scent. There really was no way he could hide. He was too large. People would hear his footsteps, and people would hear the sound of branches cracking out of the way.

He could hear the noises even before he reached the rocks, but he forged ahead just the same, letting himself finally push through the edge of the trees and into the den.

Raptors. A whole bunch of them. The human part of his brain warred against the tyrannosaurus part of his brain. Almost a dozen of them, but the majority of them were tiny. A microraptor was going to be nothing against him, which really left only four that might be some sort of threat.

And then there was a human. Or an almost human. That stirred the human part of his brain - this was why they were there. This was why there was a literal pack of raptors running through the woods. A human that looked like a raptor, that smelledlike a raptor. But it was all wrong. It was like him when he was half-shifted, twisted in between 'human' and 'raptor'.

Ignatius's tail rose as his head dropped, head lowering down as he turned it slightly, focusing on the human-raptor with one large eye. Human. But how human? He let out a huff of air.

The reaction of the pack to the approaching T-Rex was fairly predictable, but let’s be honest, even if some of them could be an actual threat to him they had smaller pack members to protect, none of them was willing to risk the lives of those who were too small to harm a predator as large as that one.

The pack took several steps backwards, roaring and taking poses that would make them look bigger and stronger than they really were, but the larger predator showed no signs of intimidation or hesitation, something that was rather uncommon. Usually even large predators like that one would turn around and leave them alone, knowing that a large group of raptors would be too troublesome to overcome, and they had a lot more to lose than they could get from attacking them.

Unlike the rest of the pack, Raptor took some steps forwards instead of retreating, being especially noisy and moving quickly. If anyone saw him they would think that he was either stupid or that he had a huge death wish, but his real intentions were to drag the T-Rex’s attention towards him so the rest of his pack would be safe. He was more than willing to put his life at risk if that meant protecting his pack.

He started to growl menacingly at him as soon as he lowered his head and looked at him, his behavior plain feral. However, this was mainly because he had no idea that he was facing someone that could shift into a T-Rex and was interested in him instead of a potential predator that would massacre the whole pack as soon as he got the chance. After a couple of seconds he took a decision, clearly nervous because the T-Rex wasn’t leaving and his pack was still too close.

In what obviously was a desperate attempt to drag him away from them he tried to jump on his head, his hook-like talons and claws ready to dig into what he thought was their attacker and hold himself in place to not fall down.

The line between what was Ignatius and what was Tyrannosaurus was a very thin one. Ignatius couldn't truly say they were one and the same, because there were parts of the human brain that simply didn't match up to his dinosaur brain. You couldn't just make your brain bigger and include all the other bits without losing some of the parts that made you human. He couldn't justlook at a big hunk of meat while shifted and not think about devouring them. It just wasn't possible.

Standing in the clearing was a bit like looking at a pile of meat. Not because he wanted to eat the raptors, but because it was pushing all sorts of buttons in his primal lizard brain. It made thinking all that much harder, but he shifted slightly, bobbing his head up and down. It was an erratic, strange movement - but it didn't last long enough to get his actual idea across, because all of a sudden the stupid half raptor was on his head.

Fighting in his shifted form was not like being a T-rex. It was a bit like riding a T-rex. He could direct himself, but he was directly fighting with his primitive instincts to do so. So when the halfling jumped, digging claws into the flesh of his scalp, Ignatius immediately bucked, lifting his head and thrashing to try and unseat the raptor.

The part of Ignatius that was still human took a few seconds to take any sort of control - headbutting a tree instead of thrashing further. Raptor was going to get off or get crushed.

Raptor held to the T-Rex head the best he could as he thrashed around in an attempt to get rid of him, his worried pack calling for him but not daring to get any closer, knowing why he was doing such a suicidal action…it didn’t meant that they wanted to leave him though, the bond they shared, past beyond the power that influenced it when Raptor became the alpha, was extremely close and they cared so much for him, that they would rather fight at his side than just walk away knowing that by doing so they were dooming him.

Raptor barely had any time to react and drop the T-Rex before he was crushed against the tree, his sudden action not really helping him when he reached the ground, a he just fell and stood still on the ground, dizzy and obviously unable to move for a bit.

Instead of leaving like he thought that his pack would do, the raptors soon ran to his aid, forming a protective circle around him to not allow the T-Rex to reach him. The bigger raptors soon got in front of the T-Rex, their pose clearly threatening, telling him that they would attack with the minimum provocation, no questions asked, while the smaller pack members nuzzled Raptor and tried to make him stand up.

It took him several seconds for Raptor to react and, rather clumsily, get back on his feet, shaking his head a bit. His condition wasn’t fitting for battle, but he was going to get well enough soon to join his pack in it and no longer need for their protection.

Ahh, a pack. He could understand that. Both parts of him could understand that, although for Ignatius it was based on incorrect ideas of how wolves worked, and for the tyrant king it was based on a herd of prey. That part of himself couldn't see it as anything but weak.

He took a great lumbering step backwards, giving the downed halfling space. The other raptors obviously feared him, but he doubted they had the intelligence required to realize what the halfling was doing. To him, there was no question what it was trying - it was trying to give the rest of the group time to run for it.

He needn't have bothered. Ignatius was big, and he was certainly fast for his size, but he wasn't truly fast. He could outrun a human, but there was no way he was going to outrun a raptor, or any animal built for any type of speed. T-rex's simply never needed that sort of ability. Any animal that could run that fast wouldn't be any more than a small meal.

Ignatius let out a snort, then growled lightly, eyes fixed on the halfling. He was the weak point. Or the intelligent bit, depending on how you wanted to look at it. He just had to figure out how to make the damn thing sure that he was intelligent, although he was hoping the lack of attack would make it obvious.
