Kay put away the couple books she had decided to borrow from the library that day after filling up the required paperwork, carefully putting them inside the bag she had hanging on her side much like the horse saddle bag. It was just easier and more comfortable to put on and take off than a regular backpack, as well to put things in them thanks to her overall anatomy. That day she had decided to borrow one new detective novel and some records about real life cases in Manta Carlos and how those were solved so she could understand and deal with the clearly different kind of crimes that occurred in a society full of all kind of magical beings. The book of records had been written in an almost novel-like form for new criminology students to understand better, and she loved the thought of the author.

After thanking the librarian, she turned around and headed towards the door, her gaze lost and her body completely in automatic as her mind raced through the last criminal record she had read about. She hadn’t finished reading it before she decided it was a good time to leave the library, so her mind was racing with all kinds of questions, suspicions and information, wanting to see if she could figure out the mystery behind the crime before actually reading it in the book. Almost without noticing, she used her talon to open the door and moved to the hallway outside without looking around her.

She wouldn’t have even noticed that someone was heading towards the library as well and was about to get in if she hadn’t bumped into him, almost falling because of it “Shoot! I’m so sorry!” She quickly apologized, rushing towards the boy to check if he was ok. She, however, was taken off-guard when her eyes landed on another gryphon.

It was a quiet afternoon for Evander as he flew back in his window after a quick flight around the lake; the perfect opportunity to catch up on some reading. With his shelf of books in the dorm looking unappealing (and, perhaps, to get away from his room mate), the gryphon decided to head down to the library….

A few minutes, and some hallways later, the hat and scarf clad student found himself in front of the library. He wasn’t sure what he was going to read; Roman and Byzantine history seemed interesting, as did digging through Theophrastus’s treatise on plants… So many options, so little time. Lost in thought, he barely noticed where he was walking until he found himself bumping into another student as he was walking in the door.

“Oh, I’m sor-“ he said, cutting himself off as his crimson eyes focused on the person he had just bumped into; a fellow gryphon, a lady at that, “E-excuse me, I’ll just get out o’ your way, Miss.”

Kay gave a nervous smile to the other gryphon before quickly checking if she or him had dropped something, but once she was sure that wasn’t the case she focused on him again. While true that she hadn’t been around for too long she had noticed right away that the school had mostly humans or humanoid creatures as students. So finding a gryphon just like her by chance like this was something she wasn’t expecting on the slightest. She had been a day or two around and she was starting to get used to the idea of expecting the unexpected in these unusual islands.

Without really intending to she evaluated the gryphon in front of him, a habit she had been accidentally creating for herself thanks to her constant practices to approach the outstanding abilities of one of his fictional favorite detectives, Sherlock Holmes, and that had led her to prejudge people around her rather quickly. Hat and scarf, unusual for gryphons to wear at least where she lived, though given the wear on them she could deduce he used them fairly often. A couple feathers out of place here and there, possibly from some kind of workout, but the lack of any kind of dust or tincture on his talons and paws led more to an activity that didn’t need them. Flying, perhaps? A scent of thyme, he either was from the gardening team, liked to cook or had some on his place for a reason that still escaped her. His accent…if it wasn’t for how at home he looked he would’ve sworn he was an outsider from the island just like herself, so it was either inherited from a stablished family in Manta Carlos or he had simply spent a long time in the islands by now.

She shook her head to break her own focus to not dig deeper on what she had seen, knowing by experience that not everyone liked to be analyzed like this and that often lead to awkward situations. She really had to work to get rid of that habit of hers, but overall the boy seemed to be a rather nice guy and polite too “H-hum…Kay Winters…my name’s Kay Winters” She hoped that by introducing herself she would be able to avoid the awkwardness or at least ease it if she had already caused it.

Evander gave a long, curious look as his eyes studied the gryphon in front of him. Her white feathers, thick plumage around the talons and patterned white fur suggested she was from a northern climate, while the ear muffs around her ears gave him the sense that her hearing was as sensitive as his own, if not more so... curious indeed. It was interesting to see how the same species adapted to different climes... but his scientific musing was put to rest by a sudden introduction on her part.

"Certainly a fitting name for one so adapted to colder climates" he replied with a smile, spreading his wings with a slight bow, "Evander Pelagius Blackfeather..... the second...."
