Luke Ochieng Okoth

The water girl with the pretty blue eyes and white hair followed him to the beach. Luke strolled ahead of her, fully clothed after having retrieved his clothes from their hiding place under the staircase. He always had to hide them, because then those awful fairies would hide them away. It was bad enough back home in Kenya but here? Here those fairies would just parade out in public. Everybody knew they were there but it was like nobody was allowed to talk about them doing mischievous things anymore. The island was so strange like that.

The sun was setting as they got to the damp part of the sand, which was just perfect because now they could definitely caught some good fishes. Those little things would never see it coming! Just one instant, they would try to go home and then the next, they'd be in Luke's claws.

He waddled into the water, waves splashing around his knees. "Okay, just pretend that you're coral!" He said out loud to the girl. "Then all the fish will come around and you can get them!" Staring deeply into the ocean, he was prepared to pounce on the first thing that even resembled a fish.

Walking with big strides behind Luke, she tried to keep up with him. It wasn't that he was all that fast, but more determined than she was, with also a lot longer of legs. Looking longingly as they got closer and closer to the ocean shore, she breathed in the homey scenting air, as she put her hair in a ponytail, not wanting it to be wet and all over the place once they hit the water. For her clothes, she really didn't care all that much about them. A pair of jeans and a plain shirt, that thankfully wasn't see-through, were the only things that would look damp once they hit the water, as her undergarments were not visible.

Smiling brightly as she stopped right behind the damp sand, she quickly plopped down, taking off her shoes anxiously. As she took her boots off, she quickly took off her socks, revealing a bit of her unshaven legs beneath her pants. Pushing herself up quickly, she bounced towards Luke, who was already knee deep in the water, telling her about the fish, to be one with them. "Uh huh, got it." She was a lot more relaxed now, as they were close to something that she loved so much, and something that Luke seemed to enjoy. As her feet quickly made it into the water, an even bigger smile crossed her face, as she ran into the water. Stopping after two strides, she remembered what Luke had said. "Sorry, right, coral." Claire had now most likely scared away all fish in the area. Looking down into the water as she slowly backed up closer to Luke, she made a small little tornado swirl with the water around her legs. Stopping, she looking away and up at Luke, poking his arm to show him the water swirl. "Look. See?"

Being coral was really hard work. Luke imagined that it was kind of like underwater trees. Only made of rock and related to jellyfish. That last one always got him. Jellyfish were like the butterflies of the ocean so it was strange that they could just drop off of trees and fly away like leaves on the wind.

As the water girl splashed around a lot, Luke frowned. That wasn't really how coral was like but then again, he wasn't seeing many fish either so it would probably be okay. It was a sad day when such fine coral as themselves couldn't attract any fish at all. But Luke supposed that tended to happen

The girl next to him was making some motions in the water that Luke didn't really understand. But he figured that water people knew best when it came to water so he just stood back and let her do. As she pointed to the little swirly things, he squinted at them, scrutinizing.

"That's a nice little hurricane you've got there," he announced. "Maybe if it were a bit bigger, we could suck out all the fish in the ocean with it. Or maybe that would be bad. The tiny button sized ones might be good for individual fish, though."

Happy that the guy was interested in her powers, she felt as if he was also mocking her. "Bigger?" She wasn't sure that she wanted to make her little hurricane like swirl any bigger, but she would try, as she had barely even stretched out her power. "Okay here you go then, not too big." Controlling the water with the with her hands, she breathed calmly as she exhaled and pulled the water closer to her, grabbing more at the same time. Moving her hands in a clockwise motion, she dropped one and began to lift up more with the hand that wasn't control the current moving water. Now about two times as big as before, she wondered if this would make anything change. Would this impress him? Would this bring more fish? Both were most likely a no, as she didn't see the point in it. It wasn't like there was a piranha that was coming for them. "Is that better?" Looking over at the man, she wondered as to what he thought of the gift that she was given. Thinking about her other power, she wondered if she could ask the fish to come closer. "Wait Luke, I can, talk to animals."

He looked at the water as the little hurricane suddenly became twice as big and clapped his hands. "Yeah, like that! Maybe we can catch some anchovies and shake them down for their secrets. They're supposed to be really small and weak, right? That's why there's so many cans of them everywhere!" They were also pretty tasty but Luke wasn't feeling too hungry at that moment. After all, he had a nice meal from the cafeteria earlier. Technically he wasn't supposed to eat there anymore but if they really wanted to get him to stop sneaking in, they had to get better about stopping him. Really, take it seriously or something.

The water girl's other power surprised him, though. "Wait, wait, wait," Luke said, mouth in a perfect O shape. "You're a fish whisperer? Why didn't you say so earlier! That makes it tons easier!"

Giving the boy a sigh of relief at the fact that it seemed that he was finally impressed with her powers, she let the waves get a bit smaller, only using one hand to keep the little swirl going. "Anchovies?" She had seen and even eaten them, the little fishes that tasted rather good, but she didn't want to make any promises to the boy as to if she could catch any for him. If he really wanted to, he could go in the water and see for himself, but Claire didn't feel like looking for tiny fishes when there was plenty else she could be doing.

"Well.... Not really a whisperer, but I can talk to them and stuff. Some fish breeds don't like me though considering I ate a lot of them in my early run away days...." She laughed nervously, trying to count in her head how many of the breeds didn't even want to get close to her. "I'll try if you want?" She asked the boy as she started to let the swirl of water slowly disappear.

Luke bobbed his head so many times that any onlooker might have feared that it might have popped off in his enthusiasm. "That's a pretty useful you have there," he said, with unnatural fervor. After all, as a bird of prey -carrion, prey, whatever- Luke was really fond of hunting fish. If he could just sit by the water's edge and charm them into leaping into his mouth, well, then he supposed that he could eat like a king every day for the rest of his life. Of course, that did take some of the fun out of it. Full belly for life or fun, that was a hard choice to make.

"Try and call up a merperson or two," he said, pointing out a distant spot of dark blue. Maybe it was just an unusually deep part of the water but Luke imagined that the shadow signaled the presence of some aquatic being, intelligent enough to lurk in the waters and eavesdrop on their conversations. "Maybe see if any clams and oysters will open their shells and fly up here, too."

As he ranted on as usual, Claire finished off the rest of the water, dispersing it back into the ocean. Looking at Luke as he talked, it seemed as if every word he spoke, was something magical, as if in his mind, we was taken to an adventurous world that only he could see, where everything was a lot happier and more interesting compared to the real one. Wondering to herself as to whether she would even have the power to communicate with all the beings that the boy wanted her to. Maybe she could get a few odd fish to come her way, but most fish didn't trust the words of her as they just saw her as a predator.

"Okay." Claire said faintly, giving a short wave. "Now I'll have to have silence if that's possible." It had been so long since she had even attempted to talk to any animal other than the wolves. Turning to make her body straight, she slowly closed her eyes, breathing in and out three times before concentrating on if she could sense any animals that Luke had mentioned. Fish fish fish. Feeling a few tinnier fishes swim closer to me, asking as to why I was calling for them. She didn't feel any merman, even though that was far out (and they most likely didn't exist, or want to be known to exist), made it even more difficult to try and show Luke what he wanted. Opening her eyes and turning around, she told Luke what she had seen and heard. "There are a few small fish that would be okay with you looking at them, I could bring them up to your face height in water balls." She smiled lightly, for some reason wanting to feel like she could impress him with her tricks. "Sad news is that I didn't find anything you asked for." Putting her hands behind her back she continued. "Maybe they just aren't think is area." She tried to cheer him up a bit.

He waited intently as the water girl did her magic. On the outside, it didn't look like she was doing anything more than closing her eyes and taking a nice deep breath but Luke knew that she was probably pulling off something really complicated. Like, maybe Latin incantations along the lines of cometh bigus pisces or something. Something grand and impressive and out of his realm of understanding so he just didn't even try. As long as the fish were talking back and coming out of hiding, that was as right as sand.

"Nah, this just confirms that they're around!" Luke said proudly after the water girl gave her report. "You see, if they're not thinking back, they're obviously smart enough to be hiding from you. That sort of tactics, it just gives away the fact that they're here. Let me see the smaller ones, though. Maybe they can send a message out since the bigger ones probably trust them more."
