Somewhere, Bells Are Ringing

Faye thought today would have been a good day, but man was she ever wrong. Today she was suppose to finally figure out why she was so different. She knew it was because she had a power, but she had no idea what it was. On her schedule the class was named "Powers for Beginners" little did she know the class would be filled with little children around eight to nine years old. It made Faye so furious she stood up and and walked right out to the only place she could find the solitude she needed. The woods.

It was a very dreary day and Faye was glad she had the sense to wear a light jacket, it typically wasn't cold on the island, but today she felt really cold. Maybe it was just her.

Faye made it to the edge of the woods and after what happened the last time she came here she wasn't sure she wanted to go in, but she was so mad she didn't care. She began her walk and she continued until she grew tired. She found a rock to sit and sat down pulling her knees up and putting her face between them. Her head was hurting, and she wasn't calming down any. Lately when she went into these moods she couldn't calm herself down, but this was the only time she turned to going to the woods.

She pulled her face out of her knees and looked at her surroundings, she had never came this far into the woods before, and she slowly began to regret it. She was lost, and it only began to make her upset, What was she going to do?

54

54 liked leaves. They came in almost every color except for blue. Purple ones could be found sometimes, really! 54 had seen them before. They were quite pretty and 54 thought that maybe they would make for a nice centerpiece in the dorm room. Just. Literally right in the middle of the floor. On 54's list of things to find was a nice, long stick of wood, for height. Maybe mahogany. That was always a nice piece of wood.

As 54 looked for those leaves, however, it became more and more obvious that the task was not quite as easy as 54 remembered it to be. The last time, 54 had simply found them by chance. Now that 54 was actually looking for them, there was absolutely no trace at all. Seasonal differences, maybe. But, no. Maybe 54 could still find them.

In the distance, however, there was this. Sound. Something ringing. For a little while, 54 tried to ignore it, since the sound wasn't all that loud. But as it came closer and closer, it went from annoying to grating.

54 was actually annoyed. This was very unusual.

Maybe a student was out practicing? That seemed to be logical. 54 would go and find them, and ask them to make the ringing stop.

Faye seemed completely oblivious to Orion when she passed by him in the Academy hallway. Orion had come to the school that day to poke around in more of the extracurricular classrooms, and would have happily joined Faye in whatever classes she had that day. But when he tried waving and smiling at her, he received zero responses from her, like her mind was preoccupied with something else. There was a moment where his thoughts caught up to him and he finally comprehended the look on her face. Something was going on and it was bothering Faye.

The girl walked really fast because by the time he had decided to try and catch up with her, she was gone from sight. When he did try tailing her, she rounded a corner or slipped away out of sight again. If he did not know any better, he would have thought she was purposefully avoiding him.

Once outside, he finally lost her and had to consult a few other students to get a bearing on where Faye had headed: the woods. The wilderness seemed like an odd place for her to go, but what did he know? Faye was probably a more complex person than he realized, and she actually liked the woods. There was one thing he was sure of though. Nobody went to the woods in the kind of mood Faye seemed to be in for no reason, and she probably needed a friend.

Finding her was a completely different story. The woods were large and thick, providing an excellent place to lose someone or get lost in. But just when Orion was starting to lose hope, the device on his glove started going nuts. It was picking up a strange and strong kind of interference, possibly of magical origin. Quirking an eyebrow, Orion curiously started following the signal to its source.

Faye wasn't sure what she had heard, but she stayed still whatever it was, she was almost sure that it likely wasn't friendly. What a mistake it was to come into the woods, she should have just went back to her dorm. Either way, she would have been lonely, just safer in her dorm room.

Thankfully there was a fern on the rock so she scooted back and hid herself behind it. She had no idea what she heard, but it only began to make her panic. What if she never made it back to the academy? And this was the last few minutes she would have? Faye always jumped to the worst possible conclusion, but in a situation like this what other choice did she have?

Faye remained still, and then she began to hear something else? Was it running feet that she heard? Someone she knew perhaps?

The source of the ringing, it had to be around here somewhere. It felt like something was clanking in 54's head, which was impressive because 54 did not even have a head that would be partial to making clanking or smacking sounds against anything. Certainly, however, the noise was such a nuisance that 54 had to wonder why nobody else had come running at the sound of it. Perhaps they were deaf to it.

Investigating the part of the woods where the ringing seemed to be the loudest, 54 was puzzled to see nothing there. The source had hidden itself. Probably a student, then, since those were the most common visitors to the woods. Or maybe not? Maybe a civilian had come to test something, something dreadfully annoying. Maybe it was the mating cry of some animal.

Unable to vocalize anything without somebody else having said something first, 54 merely wandered about the general area, not making an effort towards self concealment.

"Okay. Okay."

Orion appeared on the scene, arm and arm-mounted gadget held outward like some kind of antennae. The interference his sensors were picking up was immense, after steadily growing over the last few minutes, and he was beginning to think he had stumbled onto the source. However, as he arrived, he found nothing of any real note in the area, even though his gadget was going nuts.

"Whomever is letting off the... magic energy, or whatever, come on out! No point in hiding cause I got you zeroed-in on my device here. I mean no harm. Just super curious is all."

He wandered a little further out, finding the signal to neither increase or decrease in intensity as he moved, meaning he had come as close to the source as his sensors could detect accurately. On one of his errant waves of his arm, he intended up pointing at a moving blob thing, and he jumped slightly.

He pointed his device at the thing, thinking it might be the source.

"Woah ho! What have we here? A none-cuboid gelatinous cube?"

Faye wasn't exactly sure what she was hearing on the ground in front of her, but then she heard a man's voice. Not just any man's voice, Orion's voice! Orion? What was he doing out here in the woods? Faye wasn't sure that she should come out, because it sounded to her that he ran into something, but whatever he ran into it must have been harmless. At least she hoped.

She made an opening in the fern and peeked through to see if she could see whatever stopped Orion, but she didn't see anything. She couldn't hide forever, she slowly scooted through the fern, "Orion!" Faye started to say, then she saw what stopped him, and she stopped in her path. What was that thing? Faye had never seen anything like it before.

Faye remained on the rock, and hugged her knees looking up at Orion. "What is that?" Faye pointed. She knew her face was probably many shades of pink, but maybe the forest was dark enough to cover it.

Ah, good. The other beings in the area had made themselves now, a human male and a human female by 54's guesses. But ah, no. Neither had said particularly much. 54 immediately felt all avenues of communication be crippled. How annoying. But challenges could be amusing from time to time. 54 began butchering the words that these other beings had made.

"I [h]a[r]m n[o]-[ou]t hiding. I [h]a[r]m [o]ff-i-[o]ff-[let]ti[ng]-o[n]-[he]re. I here n[o]-[cub]oi[d]-s.Wh[o]-i-c[ube] off you is i-[ou]t."

54 studied both of the individuals. Though 54 had heard the male ask a similar question, 54 decided to give them both the benefit of the doubt for now. After all, 54 was not completely certain that the noise was magical. It could have been some kind of a siren. Although the presence of a magic detect item was quite interesting. 54 did not think that such a thing would be in the hands of a mere student.

"I am not hiding. I am 54. I hear a noise. Which of you is it?"

"Faye?"

The sound of Faye's voice momentarily distracted Orion from the weird blob-thing that was roaming the area. His head spun around to look back at a rock formation he had passed a moment ago to find Faye huddled on top of it, and pointing at the same thing he was. He wanted to move back closer to her because she looked a little distraught. But then the blob started talking like it was remixing everything he had already said, with a little bit of Faye thrown in too.

Orion was caught off guard by the... thing, and his head spun back around to stare at it curiosity. The remixed words finally coalesced into a coherent meaning in his head a few moments later.

"A noise? Like interference? So it's not coming from you...? Hm."

He pulled his hand away and looked over at Faye.

"Well, it looks like the blob means no harm at least. But are you hearing something? I'm not, but my glove is going nuts right now. By the way, what are you doing out here?"

It looked like Orion was quite shocked to see Faye, as she was him. Faye looked at the thing and she couldn't quite make out the words it said, but heard words like harm, hide, and you. And she looked to Orion with a questionable look.

She watched as he turned back toward the thing. It had obviously grabbed his attention since he first laid eyes on it. What ever it was. He mentioned something about it not meaning any harm. Faye could see that now but, why did it make it's way all the way out here?

Then Orion said something to her that really grabbed her attention. Something about him hearing a noise, is that was the thing was complaining about too? Faye listened very carefully and nothing came expect the breathing of Orion.

She looked to him confused, and shrugged. "I don't hear anything."
