Well that just confirmed it! He was spot on; the details were so clear and now they made sense. Problem was, it didn’t seem like she could control these spirits at all and there was virtually no way of asking her to have a private conversation. If anything, these spirits went wherever she did—even the toilet. That must have been frustrating to not have control over anything at all and lack privacy. He had some control over Emily. In fact, he forced himself to find a way ever since a bathroom incident when she commentated on his … ‘equipment’.

He followed her eye towards the headstones. One of them must be there and he could only assume they were possibly dangerous which crossed out another plan of attack; to persuade her to go with him in the hopes of banishing the spirits. They were here for some reason. ”Mein apologies, fraulein. ‘Emily’ can be quite…obnoxious. It gets frustrating,” He motioned to the zombie ”You know vhat I mean.” She seemed a little unsettled about standing around in the cemetery. When he was her age, he used to feel the same about all of the stares he would get. Back then, he made it a point to avoid funerals. Now? He was more than eager to see the Obituaries in the newspaper. Maybe she would want to go for a walk elsewhere?...”You ah not alone viz zhis gift. Perhaps you vhould like to..talk about it? Let us take a nice stroll avay from zhis gloomy place.” He outstretched his hand with a ‘gentle’ smile.

Mengyan ruined whatever sentiment that might have come out by snorting loudly. "What, just one?" it said, ignoring Ji Hye as she made a frantic gesture for it to stop. "You must be some kind of underachiever or something. I can't even sense that thing around you. One of the weak ones, eh, am I right? That's just so fucking typical so, so whatever. " The spirit's puppet turned to the Korean girl then with a nonchalant shrug. "I wouldn't get too worked up about it now, kid. It's just a run of the mill one shot wonder."

Ji Hye covered her flushed face with her hand, fingers spaced apart so she could still peer at the man. "I am so sorry," she said to him, babbling. "You have no idea- um, well. I guess you probably do, I'm so sorry!" She shook his head a little at his offer to go someplace else, not because she didn't want to, but because that would involve dragging her spirits along, too. "I-I'm not sure that would be a good idea. They haven't been let out in a while. They'll be angry with me if I go too far away."

But she didn't really want to be around the graveyard either because of all the noise they had been making. She fretted for a moment before turning to the puppet. "Um, um, if I stay within range, can you just stay h-here?" There was probably nothing she could do about Gom Gajug but at least Gom Gajug wasn't loud.

"Oh, okay, so you're just going to go off with this random guy that you met in the middle of the night to... somewhere, right?" The puppet crossed its arms and the neck part was flopping as if there was a nodding head on it. "He's probably like three times older than you. And we're in the middle of nowhere. And he's the questionable sort who can just casually decapitate somebody." The spirit was silent for a few moments. "Yeahhh... You know what, kid. I see nothing wrong with this situation. If you want to go out for some alone time, I am completely and utterly in favor of that" The puppet backed away to a cluster of white splattered headstones. "I'll just. I don't know. Get some buddies together and get a zombie apocalypse going or something. Ya know." The corpse made a shooing motion with one of its hands and turned away.

"Um, I-I'm pretty sure he's not going to k-kill me if that's what you're talking about," Ji Hye said anxiously. Most people didn't try once they heard about just how many spirits she had. One was fine, two was fine. Even three might have been. But when the number went up to hundreds, the response was a firm, resounding Let's get out of here now.

"Yeahhh... Kill you. Hahaha. Yeah, okay." There was no reason for why the corpse should look like it was laughing but there it was, doing just that with its shoulders shaking. "If that's what you want to think, okay."

It took her a moment to come to the other conclusion and she made a squeak of embarrassment, suddenly glad that she was covering her face. "I don't- you're not saying- but-" She shook her head more. "It's! Not! Like that!"

On second thought maybe he shouldn't have suggested that. Of course either way he was going to have these spirits ruining his plans. It would be nearly impossible to catch her alone unless he set up a ward that deflected the spirits elsewhere for a short period of time...and judging from her reactions so far, that would probably be a horrible idea--especially when the ward wore off. Emily would probably be laughing at him in the afterlife for getting his limbs ripped off.

"Heeeey, who's he calling weak?!"

Stross pinched the bridge of his nose. Oh great, the little gremlin got Emily all riled up. He could hear every curse towards the demon and it was rather difficult to focus on the people...Er, person and corpse in front of him. Dammit, he wasn't that old! Emily giggled and he refrained from telling her to shut her stupid face. She'd only make some kind of retort that she technically had no face because he killed her. Ugh.

Then she caught onto what the demon was saying and now she began to make those 'Oooooh, you sly devil' noises he hated hearing from her. He rolled his eyes and wiped at his face while the two dealt with their own...problems. Sigh. This was going to be tougher than he thought! At least she believed he wouldn't just kill her outright...In which she was partially correct. He couldn't do it here, but if the research called for it...Well, he'd cross that bridge when he came to it.

It was only when she began to as americans say 'freak the hell out', his eyes widened and a shade of red was visible on his pale features.

"Pfwahaha! Yeah right! YOU? Get your freak on with HER? Oh my god, the day I see you trying to work a bra...HAHA, LET ALONE A CONDO--"

"Hhhhrgh--AHEM!" He coughed obnoxiously to get that idea out of his head. Spirits...Why were they so immature? Mein Gott, he straightened up his tie and adjusted his glasses. Like he would do such a thing. He was twice her age probably! He didn't like robbing craddles, he preferred robbing graves, danke.

...

...

His face reddened again. Gottverdammt! He had to get the hell away and he needed to shut Emily's cackling out. H-How embarassing! There was only one thing to do and it didn't matter how risky it was...He was just going to do it. When she turned away and held her face, she left herself completely vulnerable and he didn't hesitate. He took the opportunity and snatched her up, arms locking around her small frame and he took off running. She was pretty light so it was an easy snatch n' grab. He ran for the nearest mausoleum and hauled her inside. He shut the door, keeping himself inbetween her and the exit. Wards were thrown onto every corner of the small enclosure, sticking like tape and 'sparking' with blue energy until they stabilized. He created a barrier that kept the spirits at bay...From killing him first at least.

For a while, he left her with eerie silence. N-Now what? If it didn't look like he going to 'assault' her before, he could only imagine what it looked like now. At least Emily's cackling ceased and he actually had a moment to think. He had a lot of time to spend with someone now considering barriers lasted for hours until he himself took it down. Speaking of that 'someone', he finally turned to her, the glare of the candles reflecting in his glasses, hiding whatever expression he had in his eyes. the shadows accentuated his features, darkening them somewhat with an unintentional, murderous vibe. While he could easily kill her now...

He sighed and leaned against the wall instead, a soft blue glow radiating from his back since he was touching the barrier. "...Mein apologies, fraulein. I could not zhink...Right now it iz you und me. I von't hurt you." Unless you attempt to put up a struggle. "I am Docktor Stross Leonhart...I vant to help you."

So stunned at the fact that somebody would actually resort to physically picking her up, Ji Hye didn't struggle as the man ran away with her. Not that she would have struggled much anyways even if she had been expecting it. Doing nothing probably wasn't a great idea by anybody's standards, but for what Ji Hye did and what Ji Hye was, doing nothing and just going with things was actually the logical option. The less threatening she acted, the less menacing other people would be, and the less likely they would actually hurt her. Unless they were sociopaths, in which case some spirit would try and eat them to scare them off. But mostly also because the spirits really wanted a good taste of flesh every now and then.

She really started to get nervous, though, when they went into a mausoleum and the man barricaded the door. The wards that went up were the real shocker, even though she had been expecting something like that. They weren't the most sophisticated wards she had seen but they were still pretty solid looking. The power going into them, however, was certainly not from any divine source. More of from a person's own soul, which was... Not really the safest way to go about it. It was still a popular method of practicing wards, though, because it didn't involve getting into debt of a higher power.

And oh! The man was actually even scarier looking now, with the candles casting weird shadows over his face. Shifting uncomfortably, Ji Hye backed away from him, studying the area quickly and having doubts about her earlier conclusion about her safety. The soul chains were still shifting through the wards, although somewhat sluggishly, but she thought that she could probably call some of the spirits through if she really needed to. The problem would be them seeing the urgency in her summons.

"Um, it's nice to meet you?" she said after his introduction, hugging herself out of nervousness. "I'm Yang Ji Hye..." Her body was tense, and she kept checking over the chains. Mengyan hadn't moved much from where it had been. Gom Gajug was wandering about but not too close to where they were. The hunting spirits were still going about their own business. If worst came to worst, she could always try calling Hitori. Most people who made soul wards didn't have the ability to block out divine spirits.

"Help me?" Ji Hye shook her head in confusion. "I -why? I don't even know you."

Ji Hye...Korean, obviously. She was a nervous girl, that he could tell because of how the way she constantly 'checked' for things that most likely she could see but he couldn't. She seemed...Like a really special case--a case that he was very interested in. He was surprised he could finally have an opportune moment with her and he never thought that these low level wards would even work with this situation. That meant he needed to put more time into practicing with them because obviously they were useful. For now, he focused on her and her questioning his intention. Yes, he definitely had her full attention...But how to effectively use it? He sat against the door. Luckily there were a bunch of candles and such. Who left them there was beyond him but it was good timing. He looked to her, filled with curiosity. "Well vhy not? Tell me, fraulein...How did zhis happen? Vhy ah zhese spirits attached to you?"

It couldn't be a possessed item. Naww, the item would have to be painfully obvious. Something old--maybe ancient looking or ominous and there was nothing of the sort on her person and it was rare to find items that held an X amount of spirits inside. It would be a beacon to greedy and dangerous people. Fat chance of her having such a thing. It had to be something else that he was missing and he wanted to figure it out. "It seems...Zhat zhey ah too much to handle..." He quickly corrected himself, "I mean as in zhey must give you ah hard time..." If he were Ji Hye, he wouldn't feel a lick of privacy. At all. Emily gave him that much at least.

"Um, b-both sides of my family are known to have a strong affinity to spirits," she said, timidly. Even though she could have refused to say anything at all about her powers, she didn't want any trouble and it always seemed like the more she said, the more that the other person would be less likely to try anything. Unless they were militants. Then that would be really bad but the Doctor didn't seem to be one. Militants didn't tend to bring their targets into the wards with them.

"M-mother's side used to have lots of miko who could see spirits while Father's side was always unintentionally attracting spirits. After a few generations, they attracted too many bad ones that kept hunting them down so they always had to be constantly moving from place to place." Ji Hye shook her head, eyes flickering to different parts of the mausoleum, still trying to find another exit even though she knew it would be hopeless. "I've spoken to other people before; they think that the two different takes on the affinity caused something strange to happen. So. I can chain spirits to myself s-so they can't hurt me anymore but I can't stop them from doing anything else."

She shuffled uncomfortably. "I-it's getting better," she said anxiously. "I've been getting used to having all of them around. They just talk a lot. The minor ones, anyways. The stronger ones keep trying to eat people. T-they're hunting in the forest right now since they haven't fed since I came here."

Oh so there were more…way more spirits than he thought. Maybe five to ten tops…But this number could be anything. How could she deal with that? He ended up scratching the back of his head trying to figure this out. He had never heard of such a case. This was a rare find indeed. Honestly, even if he had promised to find a way to ‘help’ her, he didn’t know where to begin! Now he thoughtfully stroked his chin, analyzing her in a way as if she were in his petri dish. He had to know more now…And maybe along the lines he just might discover a way to tone the spirits down—put them more under her control rather than the other way around…and even he might benefit from it. There was so much to learn from this girl, she had absolutely no idea…

” Does it not bother you? The voices? Surely you must not have a moment to yourself, fraulein…Vhat if I can halp you? Vhat if I can find a vay to…halp you control zhem betta’?” It was going to be a hell of a lot of work, but it was work he was definitely looking forward to. He leaned in now, his eyes looking a little too eager, but gottverdammt he couldn’t help it! ”Don’t you vant a normal life? Don’t you vant to take control for once und not let zhese spirits walk all over you? Don’t you vant a moment of silence for once?...I can halp you vizz zhis, fraulein, but only if you let me.” Well hopefully that would work because if he were in her position, he’d probably take all the help he could get.

All of a sudden, the Doctor looked even creepier than before, if that was even possible. It was probably the degree of eagerness on his face, like there was a fascinating thing in front of him and he was this close to slipping it under his arm and running away with it -oh wait. That had already happened. Okay, maybe was a bad simile.

But maybe the eagerness was a good thing? Maybe that meant he really was sincere in wanting to helping her? Ji Hye tried to let herself feel a bit of optimism but the most dominant emotion in her was wariness. She had been in this place before, after all. It never worked out. Manta Carlos was a far different place than the rest if the world, though. It was possible that somebody here could help her. It was possible that somebody was right in front of her now. She just wasn't sure.

"O-of course it bothers me," she said. "It's not like I meant for all of them to become chained to me. Most of them weren't even trying to hurt to me; they were just passing by and my power got loose. It was my own fault, really."

What was normal, anyways? Ji Hye had to wonder. It had been so long since she could apply that label to her life but maybe even back then, it had just been an illusion. Being chased from place to place by spirits with a generations long grudges wasn't exactly indicative of a normal childhood in a normal family.

I like the weirdness in my life. That was a small thought tucked into the back of her mind, hidden away so deeply that she almost lost it. What she didn't like was her powers, all of the spirits jostling for dominance, all of this running around and never staying in the same place too long. The absence of her parents. I miss them. But that was one wish she'd never get fulfilled.

Ji Hye wanted to be left alone, Ji Hye didn't want to be alone. It was okay if she didn't have many friends or if she was always going to be left on the fringes of everything. But it would have been nice to have a certain degree of normalcy in her otherwise abnormal life. If she could master her powers, maybe she would actually like herself. If she could reign them in better, maybe the spirits wouldn't fight or talk to her anymore. And if she could get some control over them, maybe the spirits would help her keep the other ones away. She hated being forced to move from place to place against her will. Sometimes she just wanted things to stop. Life was moving too fast for her pace.

"It would be nice," she began, wistfulness and uncertainty mixed together in her voice. "But I don't know how you'd do that."

He could tell that she was teetering on the edge. There was that tiny bit of hope that he heard in her voice. Maybe she thought it just wasn’t possible. Granted, this was a fairy new case for him and right now he wasn’t sure where to begin. Killing her obviously wouldn’t solve anything because he had to see her power in action in order to understand the situation better. That would be a good way to start things, but for now his main problem was coaxing her into saying yes. Then things could really begin.

”Awwuh, poor her. She’s gonna think you’re some kind of hero.”

Well she could think whatever she wanted. All he wanted to do was get his hands on this specimen. The promise of a normal life seemed to drill itself into her and she was beginning to give in. Just a little more of a push… ” I specialize in zhis field, mein fraulein. Your power is..somezhing special and…dangerous. Ve need to find a vay to control it. Ve can vurk togezza! I promise no harm shall ever come to you…” He honestly wasn’t very good when it came to consoling people, but he was doing his best right now. This was a great opportunity to discover more beautiful things about the supernatural! He may even find a way to control bigger, more powerful beings. This girl was the key.

It was crazy. Absolutely insane to take the word of this man over all of the promises and assurances she had been given before, from people who had tried, failed, and given up in fits of rage. Nobody liked the mystery of it, not knowing how something so frighteningly boundless the chains worked. Boundless, anyways, if people neglected to look at the fact that the chains offered little protection for anybody besides Ji Hye herself.

But just as it had been with Eric and even Lysander, eventually the niceties got through to her. The girl had been starved of those things before coming to the island and now that she was here, she was greedily absorbing as much of it as she could. She just. Didn't want to drive people off. Which was at total odds with her current desire, which was to latch onto this person who said that he did this kind of thing for a living and promised to try. The fact that he was a total stranger and didn't give her much of a reason to really trust him was an issue but...

"I-it's not like people haven't tried before," Ji Hye said, nervously. "N-not that I'm saying you're bad at this and all b-but it would be pretty hard, you know. I wouldn't want to waste your time. B-but, if you really want to, we can try?"
