Lucianne Lovejoy

"Oh, no, I'm all over the place in terms of age," she said cheerfully. "Sometimes I'm old, sometimes I'm young. Every time I die somewhere, I just pop back up again as a child. I think it keeps the cycle self-perpetuating like that."

She hummed a little. "I'm not quite sure what happened to myself in your world. Lucy, I'm pretty sure she's dead. Her last memory was of two people fighting and a building falling onto her, poor girl. I hope Mom and Dad made it all right. Lucille, though, she simply disappeared one day three years ago. I haven't had a memory from her since."

It was strange to think about the fact that she was, in a way, all those people. Just herself, but also... It was like actually being a million people. A million people who all were very similar, but who were all connected. If Jude hadn't literally been connected to Giltenn, he might have said his brain hurt.

But it didn't, because he was.

"It's... pretty interesting to think about," Jude said. "Like simultaneous reincarnation. But... yeah, that was my world. It might be gone now, but we're not really sure. My little group got... evacuated here, basically. A safe place. That was the idea of the island, but it wasn't like we picked it out, which kind of leads to that whole magic nexus theory."

"I'm really sorry that I can't help you there," Lucianne said ruefully. "Lucy didn't really pay much attention to the state of the world and Lucille was a bit preoccupied with university engineering courses before she suddenly vanished." She paused for a moment, trying to find something kind to say. What was there to say to somebody who probably had lost their entire world? Perhaps nothing was the best answer.

"It wasn't a bad world at all," she mused. If she never tried, she would never know.

The sentiment was nice, even if Jude would probably have agreed that there was only so much one could say to someone who had lost their world.

Maybe a different subject was better.

"Did you go to the Academy here then? In, uh, this self, I mean."

"Oh, yes, I did actually," Lucianne said, grateful for the change in topic. "I majored in, um, linguistics, actually. Of course, it helped that I can literally understand any language. It's a skill that comes easily to Regalia but I actually had it when I was still mostly human as well." It had been her only ability growing up.

She confessed, "There's really not much to say. I became a Regalia sometime after beginning college and after that, everything seemed to go so smoothly. Oh, sure, I could have gone on for a higher degree. But what was the point in that? There's really not a lot you can do with linguistics alone. So I decided to make coffee instead." She smiled. "It's more fun than writing papers, that's for sure!"

All the languages in the world. He'd known that too, but even still it sounded so grand to hear.

"There's a lot of things you can do," Jude said. "It's just... more of a thing in the narrow reality. Someone who speaks every language there would be insanely useful, but here's there's language charms. It kind of... takes it out. I mean, you could find a job at the museum..."

He considered that for a moment for continuing.

"There's things like translating ancient languages. Knowing all those modern languages would give you a huge leg up in helping translations in unknown ones."

Jude was, in so many ways, an academic. He had no idea what he was going to do after college, but it was probably going to involve a lot of studying.

Even so, that hadn't always been the career path he'd been headed on. Not by a long shot.

"Finding a career that makes people happy..." He said after a moment, trailing off. "I can see that. Even in small ways, jobs that do that feel really... really satisfying. Knowing you're making someone's day better. Knowing your helping."

He was smiling properly for the first time since the conversation about his world getting eaten had been a thing. A wistful sort of smile, thinking of better days.

Lucianne studied the expression on Jude's face, the smile that found its way there. "You know," she said suddenly, "I think this could actually work if we tried it. A pact, I mean. If I'm wrong, this is a good time to start throwing down your objections. But I don't think I'd mind it much at all. Of course, don't feel pressured to do anything," she added hastily.
