"Age is a funny thing," Lucianne agreed thoughtfully. "I try not to think about it much but I guess I'll be looking like this for a long time, huh? Regalia kind of stop aging after a certain; it's why elders like Wind's Respite are so revered. They're not just thousands of years old, they're tens of thousands of years old."

It would be sad, outliving the people she knew. But Lucianne figured that only meant she'd have all the more opportunity to find more important people in her life, more people to help, more people to befriend.

It was something Jude had tried not to think about. Many of the people he'd met would outlive him. Many would never die. Roa, for one. Officer Genovese, for another. Probably Rory...

Jude grimaced for a moment, trying not to think about it.

"The whole island's kind of like that," Jude said. "I guess it's just one of those things most people try and avoid entirely. There's a lot of topics that just... throw people off here. What's it like back in, uh, the Regalia homeworld?"

She tipped her head to the side. "I actually don't go there very often," Lucianne answered. "I was born human, you see, or mostly human. There's wishing spirit magic in our blood and I just happened to come out with more of it than usual. I chose to become a Regalia later on -it meant ditching a few things but I accepted the consequences and I'm really happy with how it's turned out."

That was... a lot of new information.

"Wait," Jude said. "So you aren't born a Regalia? I assumed Regalia was like... a species, but you make it sound more like a mantle."

"It's a little of both, honestly," Lucianne admitted. "People can choose to become Regalia if they have enough spirits' blood in them. It means essentially being reborn, though. The first Regalia were just normal nature spirits who got sick of being what they were. They decided to become protectors instead of just bystanders in the world."

So Regalia were like guardian spirits. He'd sort of known that, but it was helpful to have it laid out so simply. Not that the information was particularly useful or anything, but Jude did enjoy learning for the sake of learning.

"That sounds like... well, a big deal. Do you remember who you were before, or did that rebirth...?"

"Oh, I remember who I used to be. I was just me, but more impatient, not as kind, and too afraid to take the opportunity to be generous to others," she said. "But the transition from human/spirit hybrid to Regalia is one of the easier ones out there. It helps to be human-shaped, for one, because most Regalia are human-shaped. One of the other proctors, she used to be a spirit of the deepest parts of the ocean. There's not much she can recall about that except darkness."

A spirit of the darkest parts of the ocean... Jude stared into space for a moment, considering that.

"That just seems... very lonely," Jude said after a moment. "I hope she's happier now. Does someone come find you and offer you the chance?"

"Oh, it's wonderful for her now! She's a lawyer on the island and she's got the nicest moms," Lucianne said happily. Loralai really did have such a fortunate life as a human, Regalia, whatever she identified as nowadays. "Her family's so big -I'm actually from one of its many branches. All of us have a tendency to draw supernaturals to us so that's how I found out about the Regalia thing."

Jude smiled, the tone considerably lightened, and seemed to relax a bit.

"Then that's good. I can't imagine just... being at the bottom of the ocean all alone." It was a scary thought for most people, least of all him.

"I was kind of actually hoping you were from the other world, just so we'd, uh, have it in common." His fingers were folding together, burning out that anxious energy with fidgeting as they lingered in the bookshop. "I'm from another world entirely, so a lot of this stuff has no equivalent for me."
