Ekaterina Dmitrievna Kalinina

At around two in the afternoon, restless came over her as she poured over samples of lung tissue. No matter how many times she looked at her work that day, the woman found that her mind was wandering away. Setting aside her materials, she decided to go for a walk instead, maybe just in the hallways would be fine.

"I'm going on break," Ekateirna announced to the room as she left. "I'll be back soon." Her single remaining colleague made an irritated wave with his hand, so engrossed in his work that she was certain he barely heard her. Well, that was good enough.

She stepped out.

Aiden was walking the hallways because he was bored.

It was a little surreal to think he could be bored as a doctor, but he was. He was thinking about a new pasty recipe and looking at his clipboard.

Completely self-absorbed, the young man didn't realize he was about to walk into someone until he looked up and said, "Oh, goodness, my apologies m'am."

He didn't recognize her right off the back and said, "You're one of the part timers?"

As a man almost bumped into her, Ekaterina swerved to the side abruptly. Even once that had been averted, her hands still went to her clothes, making sure that not a flash of skin was exposed.

"It's quite alright," she told him, with an an uneasy click of her tongue. "And yes, I'm part time in the labs. I don't believe I've met you?"

"I think I've seen you around, but I don't usually work this shift anymore," Aiden said. "My name is Aiden Hart, I've been doing clinical these last couple of weeks."

He hesitated, because Aiden realized he was walking in the wrong direction. He said so as much outloud and did a 180 to walk in the same direction as her.

She shrugged but admitted, "Maybe a little. I've been working mainly on lung diseases and it's a challenge all right." Her mind went over to that one Japanese teacher who had been at the Academy before. "Cystic fibrosis, for one. I'm not having too much progress, though." Itou had disappeared months earlier, too. It worried her.

Aiden flinched. "Cystic fibrosis can be a bitch. It's fascinating that the disease could technically be contributed to a psychosomatic disease...but it's not in fact psychosomatic."

He realized he was rambling and shook his head. "Sometimes, I think, if I had to do it all over, I'd jump into psychiatry. What about you--are you happy in your career?"

"Oh?" Aiden asked, arching an eyebrow. He was too polite to outright ask what they were, but he was oh so very curious. "That's always been my biggest envy, stuck here as a human. There are people who can rearrange molecules and heal with just a touch and I'm here holding my scalpels."
