Madhukar Bhattacharya

It was a decent crop that day, Madhukar supposed. His powers had, as usual, produced a good amount of fruit for sale. In his cart he had grapefruit, pomegranates, and monk fruits separated into little baskets. There were red currants in a jar, acai berries in a partially open canvas sack. Pumpkins were propped up invitingly against boxes of hawthorn and saguaro berries. A single cantaloupe was set on a folded cloth. The real prize of the day was the Pomegranate of Knowledge, as he liked to call it. It was at home in his fridge, waiting to be made into ambrosia. He didn't really need its abilities, after all.

The sun was coming up across the icy sidewalks and Madhukar eyed a patch of black ice warily. It wasn't looking like a good day for sales, unfortunately.

Linael "Lina"
Linael looked behind a tree trunk as she rested on a tree branch, making certain her pursuers weren't coming after her. She was, unfortunately, wrong. She had lost them for the moment as she watched them fly around as well but it didn't take long before she was nearly ambushed. A high-pitched chime noise rang from her as she screamed and she fluttered off as quick as she could from where she had sat, fleeing down into the city below.

She flew through the buildings and streets as fast as she could. She looked like a little ball of light just flying all around to anyone who spotted her in these early morning hours, like a magic spell gone awry. The next thing she knew, she had rammed right into someone without realizing it. She plopped off of them with a chime-like noise and fell down into a basket filled with pomegranates, her light disappearing down into it. She rubbed her head before looking up through the pomegranates, spying the human. She immediately eeped which sounded like a barely heard chime and hid further down into the basket, making her way to the bottom to hide further from both the human and her dark fae pursuers.

What was that? He hadn't had time to see what it was that bumped into him; it was so small and light that he had barely felt it at all, in fact. The only reason why he knew anything was amiss was because of the sound that immediately followed. It was airy and chime-like, the exact opposite of what he would expect.

There was a second sound from his basket of pomegranates. Madhukar peered in at the fruits with a frown, beginning to rearrange them. There was a small, strange light illuminating the spaces in between.

Linael gave a panicked flutter of her wings, frozen in place as the human began moving the fruits around. She finally flew out in panic and hid inside of the man's cart. To be honest, she was more scared of the Dark Fae, though... she wasn't sure if she had lost them by now. She stayed in a corner of the cart away from the human, watching him, not that he could see the figure in the light from where he was. The light flickered due to her shuddering little body though as she both watched the human and peered at her surroundings worriedly.

All right, there was definitely something there. Madhukar squinted a bit but couldn't see anything in particular. Whatever it was had to have been tiny. He decided not to think too much about it for the time. As long as it wasn't messing around with his fruits, there wasn't too much of a problem.

He continued down the street, quietly chatting up the few people who passed by. Not well, granted, but he still tried. Something about human connection and what not led to better sales. He was working on it.

Linael blinked and nearly fell over as the cart began moving. She sat down and watched, looking around at the scenery through the heaps of baskets around her. But it didn't take long for her to spot one of the shadow lights flying around near her. She froze instantly, not willing to move or make a sound. She wasn't sure, but surely if the big human hadn't seen her, they wouldn't?

Where she couldn't see, three more shadowy lights joined the one she did see. The four of them looked at each other before nodding as they flew into the human's cart of fruits. She couldn't see where the one she was looking at had gone and her heart caught in her throat. Two of them searched the baskets in confidence that the human could not get them as they tossed fruit out of his baskets while two others snuck around inside his cart.

There were few things that could make Madhukar freeze in panic nowadays and one of those on the list were fae. A handful of clementines appeared in his hands and he instinctively threw them at the nasty little things now messing up his fruits. "Hey! Get out of there!"

When they didn't seem to pay any attention to him, he frowned and drew out a cold iron knife. "Hey! Don't make me use this now!"

The Dark Fae completely ignored him and just dodged the fruits. When he pulled out the iron knife, one of them just looked at him before throwing a fruit back at him instead, both of them beginning to pelt him with fruit. Linael spotted one of the dark faes just as they came around a basket next to her and she cried out with fear, fleeing from the cart. With that, the dark fae stopped pelting the man with fruit and immediately chased after the little light with cackles as two more emerged from his cart to give chase as well.

He didn't even think about it -which was a bad thing; he just stabbed at the dark fae with brutal accuracy, enough to pierce through papery wings with ease. It was conditioned in him that fae were simply up to no good so when he saw a group of them chasing after something else, he assumed that was still the case. Madhukar had done his best to ignore those mental leanings in his years on the island -and he liked to think sometimes that he succeeded- but some wounds were just too large to completely heal.

Linael immediately hid as soon as she heard the cries of the dark fae. She watched as they were brutally slaughtered with horrifying accuracy by the fruit vendor, fluttering her wings with worry. She peeked out from inside the lantern she had chosen to go into, opening the door and looking down at the human. He didn't seem to come after her... she gave another flutter of her wings in worry as she watched him, ready to close her lantern door at any moment.
