Powers:
Insanity Inducement. Tyler, when in sight, can cause the people who see him to become mentally unstable. His power is also amplified when in eye contact with another person. It can cause one to lose some self control at its weakest (making a trained dog lose its discipline, making an aggresive person hostile) and it can cause insanity at its peak. Tyler, at the moment, cannot control his power, therefore making him a hazard. His power can affect animals as well as people.
The insanity is usually only temporary, lasting as long as Tyler is in sight of the affected person. But in extreme circumstances, like life or death situations, his powers go out of control, causing permanent or longer lasting insanity. It affects everyone uniformly no matter their current state of sanity. (*see footnote at the bottom)
Biography:
Tyler was born to a well-to-do family. He was a popular boy with many friends because of his thoughtfulness and benignity. His father was the owner of a major pharmaceutical company and his mother used to be a seamstress. Tyler was his mother's favorite son. She would always spend time with him, teaching him how to sew and dance. Tyler's father, on the other hand, was rarely home. When he was, he would always vent his anger on his children, shouting at them for even the smallest of things. He was verbally abusive but he never laid a hand on any of them.
One day, when Tyler was seven years old, his father came home angrier than usual. When he saw Tyler and her mother sitting together in the living room, he snapped. He shouted at Tyler, called him useless and pathetic, and told him that he was nothing but a waste of space. Tyler cried but he stayed silent, and then his mother told him to go to his room. While he cried into his pillow, he could hear both of his parents arguing, yelling at each other. After a while, he heard a loud smack. Then he heard it again, only this time with his mother's pained cry.
Tyler got up and went down just in time to see his mother kneeling on the ground with a purplish hand mark on her cheek. "Mom?" he called out, making him the center of everyone's attention. The moment he looked at his father's eyes, he saw something inside him break. Suddenly, his father lunged at Tyler and put his hands around his son's neck. While Tyler was struggling, he saw his mother's eyes filled with distress and anguish, so suddenly replaced by anger and insanity. He watched as his mother took a vase and slammed it into the back of her husband's head, killing him. She hugged Tyler, murmuring that she would never let him go and that nothing would stop her from protecting him.
The next day, she was taken away to a mental asylum for the criminally insane. He was taken to an orphanage where he was adopted by a nice couple. He became more withdrawn and introverted after the incident. He still made friends, but he became too afraid to approach others. Tyler knew that he was somehow the reason why his father became so aggresive and why his mother became so mentally unstable. Fortunately, when he was 15 years old, he met a traveling psychic who told him the truth about his ability to cause dementia. He spent the next six years trying, and failing, to rein in his powers, until he received an invitation to go to a place called Manta Carlos Island, where people like him live and learn to control their own special abilities.
