Wong Ha Jung

Wong Ha Jung ducked his head and blushed as William began to laugh, only realizing then just how many people were staring at them. At least it seems to be a good sort of laugh, he thought, covering the lower part of his face with his hand in embarrassment. And I guess it doesn't seem like he's laughing at me specifically? Although he supposed that he wouldn't have minded so much if the boy had been. Laughter was a good thing. People should do it more.

Still, there was a slight sense of being chastened, which made the man feel ridiculously young again. It wasn't really William's words that created it, so much as the awareness that others were watching them specifically. It didn't take too much to get over the feeling, though, probably because it seemed like everything he had been doing on Manta Carlos up until that point could be summed up in one of two ways. If he wasn't doing his job, then he was embarrassing himself. If he wasn't embarrassing himself, then he was doing his job. And then sometimes he multitasked and managed to do both at once.

"I have absolutely no opinion on normalcy," Wong Ha Jung said softly, half to himself. Some of the sound was muffled by his hand anyways. "Or at least, I'll maintain that I don't."

"I will tell Administration, though," he said, straightening and letting his hand drop. "It's fine if they don't believe me but I guess since they hired me to handle this sort of thing, it would be kind of counterproductive."

Everybody has an opinion about normalcy, doc. William said, his mood still light and cheerful, a small smile of his face indicating that he was something he wasn't in a while: grateful. He tried to push that small voice inside his head that told him that he should thank Wong away, but it still remained present and manifested itself in the small way of his shoulder relaxing and his voice softening a bit. He was no longer talking to Wong as he would to a therapist, or even a teacher, but rather as he once talked to his friends.

Mostly because everybody has an opinion about everything. he snorted, rolling his eyes as he put his hands on the table in front of him and leaned onto them. That's okay though. You don't push our opinions on other people, and as long as you do that, you're allowed to think whatever the hell you want as far as I'm concerned. he said, looking Wong in the eyes, surprised at how easy all of this was suddenly, to talk, to share...To share. His eyes suddenly grew wide in fear.

Lying on his side, Spirit sighed a bit as he got up, though not overly loud. He had not been fooled by the suddenly rise in William's mood, and had in fact been expecting the break down for a few minutes now.

Easy there, little one. he mused, rubbing his nose lovingly against William's cheek, as he boy shook in horror of realisation that he had just shared his deepest, darkest fear with somebody, in a place where a dozen or more people could hear him. He had shown Wong a side of himself that nobody was supposed to know about, a side that could easily be hurt or turned against him if one of his past victims and future attackers were ever to find out about it.

Please. he suddenly whispered, his voice barely laud enough to hear. Don't tell anybody... It was irrational, he knew, for Wong was bound by the rules to not ever share anything William told him with the Administration. Still, the fear remained, and not even a Spirit's cold nose against his cheek could pull him out of it. Only when he felt the safe grip of Warrior's hand on his shoulders did his breathing start to return to normal again.

Ah... That's right, it had been a while since he had been on the opposite side of a spontaneous mental breakdown. For a moment, the counselor was almost taken back by how foreign it looked from the outside. Luckily, it seemed like Spirit knew exactly how to go about the situation, as Wong Ha Jung found himself at a momentary lost. All he could do was lean forward a little, straining to hear William's words and still almost missing them.

The plea to not say anything was a familiar strain that resounded painfully with him. "I know," Wong Ha Jung muttered under his breath, looking at the boy with wide, sincere eyes. If you say anything, they'll never look at you the same way again. "I know, I won't tell anybody anything about this. I promise." Life's not a perfect fix but it's good enough for the time. Let's not ruin it, right? Maybe other people might label sentiments like that as being unhealthy but sometimes that ledge was safe enough to stand on anyways. This was one of those times. Hopefully. He'd been wrong before and occasionally, even if the way down wasn't going to be long, it still could be messy.

People can be fragile. And immediately, the man felt terrible for thinking it because there he was bringing his own life into things and he just wanted to let things be buried and done with already. Or is that just being callous? he wondered distantly. It was such a tiny voice in the back of his mind that the counselor crushed it, and felt vaguely like a terrible person for doing so. It was just one of those situations that he couldn't win.

With a sigh, he leaned back, fiddling with the top button of his shirt. "Some day," Wong Ha Jung started before faltering. Did he really want to say it? He wasn't sure. I should call my parents. There was just this weight of something that he hadn't quite been able to shake off. It's not weak to want talk to people. Being able to talk freely again was something that he hadn't rediscovered. I shouldn't be doing this. The thought just kept getting in the way and it probably wasn't appropriate for him as an authority figure to be trying to confide in a student anyways. Yet there he was.

Sorry...

"Some day," Wong Ha Jung said again, glancing away for a moment. He took in a deep breath and shook his head. "Maybe I'll have to explain some things that came up in our first conversation." The man smiled but it was weak and fell off to an expression of uncertainty. His eyes scanned the table in a bid for more time to think about a less stressful topic that they could turn.

"Would like any more coffee?"

Moments like these always managed to surprise Spirit, despite the fact that it had been a long time since he had first seen it happen. He knew how William's mind worked, probably better than the boy himself for he was still at that age where remembering his own name was a complicated task, but he still watched with no little wonder as the boy quietly composed himself back together at the first sign of discomfort in somebody else. He was aware, of course, that that was something that the boy always did. When alone, or in the presence of somebody emotionally stronger than himself, he would break down, like he did just now, if something pushed him over the edge hard enough. However, at the first sign of weakness, or uncertainty, from another person, he would quietly put himself back together, as he did now, gathering himself piece by piece until he was whole again. And he would not break down again. Not until there was somebody else in his presence that might do the same. Not that it seemed like Wong would need William's help any time soon, however, something in the man's voice as he spoke at the end must have triggered the reaction in William, as the boy was looking calm again, pushing the chair that he was sitting on slowly towards the back as he stood up.

Yeah. he said, taking a step towards the counter. I'll go order this time. he offered, his eyes quickly scanning the front of the shop and the line in front of the register. The rest of his body, however, stayed perfectly still. It was plane to see that he had something else to say but didn't quite know how to go about it properly.

I... he began, and Spirit could see the firmness in his eyes. He was stable again, maybe more so than he was for some months now. Thank you. he said in the end. I know that this is your job and all...but still. Thank you. he smiled, almost invisibly, and his body finally moved forward towards the counter. And whatever you wish to explain to me...I swear I won't tell as well. he added, as he left the vicinity of their table and taking a place in the line.

For a moment, there was silence around the table until, suddenly, Warrior finally spoke. You broke through to him. was all he said as he looked at Wong, his silver eyes somehow not as cold as they were usually.

He swallowed thickly, touching his fingers to his forehead and not quite hiding behind his hand. I guess I should be glad. Breaking through had been the goal, after all. He just wasn't sure if he had gone about it the right way, if that even mattered. It probably didn't. Maybe. Dear God, I don't even know.

"I like helping people," Wong Ha Jung said quietly, because that was the only thing that felt okay to say. He started to babble a little as nerves got the better of him. It all came out in kind of a muddle. "I don't always get it right and that scares me. Sometimes it's all I've got and I just don't want to let anybody down again." Being who he was, it was hard not to take such things as severe personal failures. It felt like he had gone and mucked around enough in the first two thirds of his life; it would have been nice to do things right to make up for it.

He shook his head, silencing himself. The gesture itself was also meant as an apology. "Will he be all okay, then?" the counselor wondered, about William. It was something of a useless question, when he could clearly see that something had changed in the boy. "Not that I'm saying that I'll be stepping away or anything. If he still wants to talk to me, I don't see any reason to stop." He wasn't supposed to be stopping but in any case, it was just... nice being able to talk with people and know where the general direction was heading to.

I'm such an idiot.

But it wasn't like that was anything new.

For a moment, neither creature said anything, partly because they wished to give Wong a moment to calm himself down again, and partly because neither was sure what he should say, for while there was obviously something different about William when he stud up, it could have been just temporary. It was, however, a break, which meant a crack in his shell, and a beginning.

You have thrown a stone down the mountain, doctor. Warrior then spoke, seemingly having found the right words. Now, we have to wait for the avalanche. and as he said that, Spirit found himself nodding, almost subconsciously, in agreement. He knew William too well to believe that the boy would agree to anything, even the things that were good to him, without at least a little bit more of a fight.

Indeed. he said after a few moments, voicing his agreement as well as expressing it. For while getting him to speak about all of this is a miracle in itself, doctor, it doesn't fix all of the emotional scares that it had left on him...or the physical, real word problems that it had caused him. The fights were just one side of William's problems, an outlet for all of his pent up anger. What worried Spirit more, or at least equally so, was boy's seeming inability to decide on or commit to anything that didn't involve physical contact or violence. He was still in danger of failing several of his courses, and didn't have a slightest clue as to what he wanted to do in college, let alone life. Expressing all of this worries to the therapist would, however, seemingly have to wait, as Wong was still having troubles collecting himself. Somehow, Spirit found himself wondering if the man would mind it too much if he went over there and tried to comfort him the same way he would do to William. Very likely. Probably. Perhaps.

Here, doc. William suddenly said, returning from his trip to the counter and putting the newly ordered cup in front of Wong as he sat down again. I ordered you the same...hope that's okay. he said as he bent down to put a new cup in front of Spirit as well. He had requested a bigger cup this time, so big that it almost looked like a soup plate, so the wolf could drink comfortably from it. The creature didn't seem all too interested in it at the moment though, which made him look at Wong again.

Hey, everything alright with ya? he asked, leaning a bit worriedly towards the man, striking Spirit with a sudden revelation that he was going to save for later time. For now, he just wondered if he should still reply to what Wong had said a few minutes ago.

You're a good man, doctor. Warrior, however, to his surprise, seemed more than willing to that for him. But nobody can save everybody. William looked at the silver haired creature confused, wondering what the hell the warrior was talking about.

Wong Ha Jung

"Oh." He blinked at the cup that William had set in front of him for a moment before sliding it closer to himself. "Oh, thank you." He wasn't sure if he actually wanted it but it gave him something to do besides sit there awkwardly and sputter out part of his heart. Taking a few sips, the man went ahead and killed a little bit of time to try and get his emotions back into order.

At William's question, the man smiled just a little. "I've had worse," he said, with a quiet chuckle to himself. "Don't worry about me. I get into these moods occasionally. It's nothing too serious." And really, it wasn't any more. Wong Ha Jung could deal with it by himself for a time. That was what the lithium was there for, after all.

He had to turn in surprise, however, at what Warrior had to say. A compliment was unexpected. The part that came after, though, was not. It was only what Wong Ha Jung had been thinking himself. He just wished that the image of that rooftop would hurry up and go away. The thought of it, depending on the day, made him blanch. Today wasn't one of them.

To Warrior, the counselor said lightly, "You know, if you're keep calling me that, I might have to go back to school and actually get my doctorate." Which, well. Actually wasn't that bad of an idea. The question was whether or not it would be worth the effort when he already had a fairly decent job doing what he wanted. Except for the teaching part. It would have been nice to have had that. But he supposed that it was too early to say that he would never get back to that at some point.

"But thank you, nonetheless." Wong Ha Jung sat back in his chair, smiling genuinely again. It was nice to have some indication that he was doing something right, even if it wasn't clear that it would last. Sometimes trying was really all that he could do. It could be enough. It could also not be. But at least for the rest of the time there in that coffee shop, he could put that last thought out of his mind.

...He was sick of arguing with himself anyways.
