Oh, how lovely. Immediately, Yuzuru was pushed into defensiveness. It was yet another person who bought into the "magic island" plot. Really, it was unclear whether he should be more annoyed with the staff for perpetuating the con or the students for so willingly and blindly believing in it.

"Well, I am rather good with a bow," he said, meaning that he was certain that out of his entire marksmanship class, he thought a person would be hard pressed to find better. "I suppose it is nothing very remarkable but it seems to be a bit more than what other people claim to have." Without intending to, a bit of his annoyance concerning the situation dripped right into his voice.

Honestly! Demons, dragons, all of this nonsense that was going about -was there anybody rational around?

Ellyn hadn't thought the question would get such a negative response. It usually got people talking more, not less.

She was hesitant to admit her own powers, but, uh, what else could she really say?

"I have a kind of mental shield," she said awkwardly. "How did being good with the bow get you here?"

And of course, she claimed to have a power that could never be proved. Yuzuru found that awfully convenient. It certainly was smarter than claiming to be a dragon or able to fly, at least, which proved that she was either a good deal smarter than the other people he had met or even more out of it than they were. Neither seemed to be very good options to choose from.

"Excuse me, but did somebody put you up to this?" Yuzuru asked suspiciously.

"I'm sorry?" Ellyn asked.

She wasn't at all sure what to make of this situation. Why would he assume she was lying? There were people all around her with way more outlandish powers than hers, but hers seemed...what? Fake?

"Why would you think someone put me up to anything?"

He tried not to feel too frustrated but there was something about her reaction that simply was irritating. Was that innocence because she honestly believed in this and thought he was the one being unreasonable? Or was she simply that good of an actor?

No, he must be calm. Being rash would only land him into trouble. Yet, on the other hand, Yuzuru simply wanted a single conversation outside of class which was actually grounded in reality. He felt like an outsider on the island, which was hardly a new feeling at all, but if everybody was going to indulge in their collective fantasy, he thought that he would rather distance himself from it.

"My family has believed in magic for a long time," Yuzuru told her shortly. "There is absolutely no proof to any of it but they kept trying to convince me of it. That is the reason why I am here but clearly, they are mistaken because I have seen nothing of the sort in the eight months I have been here, despite everybody's profuse efforts to prove otherwise. Please do not attempt to persuade me further because I am honestly tired of people trying."

"Seriously? Eight months and you haven't seen it?"

It occurred to Ellyn that maybe his power was a stronger version of her mental shield? But how could that work... she could still see magic. Then, the mental magic thrown at her that she reflected, she knew she didn't feel that. It was as if it never transpired.

She felt it would have been a foolish pursuit to offer him this information. Why would he believe it? If he didn't believe his own family, why would he believe her?

"I couldn't try if I wanted," Ellyn said at last when the shock of the situation had worn off. "I don't have anything flashy to show off. Besides, if you don't believe your family, why would you believe me?"

"Thank you," Yuzuru said, with much more sincerity than he would have thought possible or proper. The idea that she might have been mocking him a little lingered in the back of his thoughts and he did his best to keep that in mind, least he become too emotional over the situation.

"I hope that you will forgive me," he continued, slipping back into a usual calm. It was still not completely natural but he thought that he was doing well with it. "I am very used to people going to great lengths in their arguments."

"You're welcome," Ellyn smiled halfheartedly. He was probably sitting there thinking she was some weirdo, and oddly she was sitting here almost thinking the same. Maybe not weirdo, per say, but weird, in this environment.

"I imagine you're going to be continuously getting a lot of that," Ellyn told him ruefully.

She'd have gone a step further and informed him that people would be baffled by his lack of believe in the things they could do. But, he already knew that, didn't he? Besides, that would only bring back the unpleasantness of before, and Ellyn didn't want that. She'd had enough unpleasantness to last her a lifetime in Manta Carlos thus far.

"So you're good at archery, huh? I'm a fan of marksmanship, myself. I know the longbow well, and I've been shooting rifles with my dad since I was young."

'Getting a lot of that' seemed like a massive understatement to him but Yuzuru did not correct her, choosing to simply nod. He was tired enough of the subject and what she said was already as close to the truth as it could get.

"Oh? You shoot as well?" His interest was caught by her mention of archery though there was no helping that faint sense of unease that she might be better than him. He quelled it quickly, however. It was a pointless question to become hung up over. She most likely did not practice kyuudou in any case. Not that it mattered, of course.

"I have been with a longbow for so long that I do not think I can remember a time when I did not own one," he said. "I am a little familiar with firearms from the marksmanship class here but I favor the bow much more."

"The bow is an amazing weapon. I don't think I practiced it as long as you, though," she smiled warmly. "I can remember I time where I didn't have some kind of projectile weapon in my hand. I did learn the longbow, crossbow, and rifle. All from my father who's a big fan of those things. I was always interested in trying a bō, though."

She took a moment to catch her breath after talking so long. "Who taught you?"
