Niccolò Belmonte

As Miranda slept on, Niccolò dithered around downstairs, alternating between catching up on some work and merely lazing about like it wasn’t a working day for him. (Technically everyday was, except for Sunday mornings.) Eventually, however, he came to the conclusion that she probably was out for the night and that there wasn’t any point in waiting for her to come back down. He made himself a simple dinner –thaw, unwrap, microwave, done –and ate it while checking over his emails.

Unusually, Paschalis had actually contacted him for once. Clicking that email open, Niccolò found that the opening was a very politely worded paragraph about his guest, which also radiated such a very Paschalis like air of This is now your problem and not mine that the lawyer couldn’t help but smile.

There was an attachment, too, of some pdf that was written entirely in Swiss French, to his dismay. Although, the last line of Paschalis’s message did say something along the lines of Sorry, I couldn’t find a translation. With a contemplative sigh, Niccolò glanced over at a rack of wine against the wall. Well, seeing as Miranda was asleep, just a few drinks couldn’t hurt, right? A little alcohol was just the thing to dig up his long since buried knowledge of French.

It was a pretty nice night, too, so maybe the cool air would help. Wine bottle in one hand, he stacked a French to Italian dictionary and a wineglass on top of his laptop and headed to the frontyard.

(OOC: just as a description reminder, Scorpion's Aura would probably be black as midnight and be a mixture of the sea and blood, but while Scorpion's personality is in control, it still looks just like Lorelei since she's not in stage 2 beta, although she may have a different movement style, more predatory, more confident, and much more insane. I'll have her be on the lawn before Niccolo.

Yes this post is meant to be extremely confusing. It's supposed to suggest that either Ishiki, Darkness, or Scorpion, or perhaps more than one, killed Ragnarok.

Sorry it took so long to post; keeping it all straight took some effort.)

Scorpion had been outside on the lawn standing still and staring up at the moon with fascination when she heard the door behind her open. Slowly, she turned, her eyes as wide as they could and showing whites all around the iris, her face bearing a wicked smile, and tilting her head to the side, she giggled.

"Who killed Ragnarok?"

Scorpion stopped, buckled over giggling, like it was something insanely hilarious, shrieking with laughter, and then, clutching her sides, still bent over, she looked at the intruder and continued. "Who killed Ragnarok? Scorpion knew. But Scorpion's memories inside Lorelei's blood don't, because Scorpion doesn't want Darkness to know Scorpion's sin, so Scorpion sealed Scorpion's Memories, but the memories of others were sealed as well. Who killed Ragnarok? Upon the strings of fate, the sun and the moon flux and flow in their eternal dance, ever bound to never meet in the twilight hour never they shall see. The Ouroboros chases its tail, devouring itself until nothing remains, as the endless cycle continues. Darkness consumes all, devours all, can only be chased away by the light, but if Darkness stalks the earth, but Light is nowhere found, who then exists to chase away the shadows and rescue the maiden/ Can the balance be restored if Darkness rose, or will the Darkness come forth and hunt the Darkness? Is evil truly evil if the evil is made to destroy evil? Can the Healer fix what has no body? Does the healer hunt the shadows to destroy the Darkness, does the Pure One kill in Sin, does the Light become Darkness to become Light? Has a circle any beginning, where is the beginning of the beginning, what is the end of the end? That which was begat before the life determines the life, and yet the life chose its own path. The Heart of Light surrounds itself in Darkness to become a match for the Shadows when truth stands that Light could never become Shadow because Shadows must rival the Healer."

Scorpion stopped talking, then suddenly fell over laughing, rolling on her back, kicking her legs in her screaming laughter. "A tragedy, a tragedy, a comedy but a tragedy! Can't the Heart of Light realize Sin done in Kindness is Balance? Kindness done in Sin can't match the Light to the Shadows if the Shadows are already Light! The Ishiki, the Healer, she who must kill the killer to heal the wound and save the life, but to save the life by killing the killer she only kills the saved life she killed! The Scorpion's poison kills in order to save! The Darkness dances in the Endless circle, it must match Light, and the Light must match the Darkness! Balance! It's a game of Balance, and they're all fools! Who killed Ragnarok? Scorpion knew, Ishiki knew, Darkness knew, but all has been sealed, only Scorpion's memories know, but Scorpion's memories can't know, because who killed Ragnarok? The destruction must be reversed for Dark to become Light, but if Light was never Dark, then it's all pointless, and they're all fooooollllssss!!!!" Scorpion was cackling with laughter, clutching her sides, and having trouble breathing. it took her several minutes to calm down.

When she finally did, she lay there on the grass, panting for breath, sweating a little from laughing so hard and still grinning wide from her amusement. "Who killed Ragnarok? Scorpion knew, but knows no longer. Scorpion must tell Darkness, must tell Ishiki, but they already know, but they must never know. Scorpion's memories exist to keep the memories from being remembered; is this person Scorpion sees a seeker of truth? Scorpion's task is to make corpses of all who try to find Scorpion's hidden answer, but Scorpion must also let it be known, because that which can't be remembered is that which must never be forgotten. Scorpion spies, with Scorpion's little eye, a foe or an ally?"

Scorpion threw her head back and laughed again. "Scorpion offers the challenge: who killed Ragnarok? Scorpion knows, but cannot tell. Scorpion needs Darkness, for Darkness is where it began, but it began before Darkness. Lorelei-host saw Darkness today, but Lorelei-host is not one with the shadows, and Darkness is a sentient but not sentient. Since Darkness is near Scorpion's memories, Scorpion's memories must find Darkness, the being which exists to kill to save lives but doesn't save lives because it kills. The strongest Scorpion is near at hand, within Scorpion's memories's grasp, but Darkness is yet so far, and Darkness is ever fleeting." Scorpion giggled, then fell back and lay down spreadeagle on the grass, watching the stars.

"Darkness to Light and Light to Darkness, the circle never ends because the beginning cannot be found except before the beginning. It's a game of balance, but balance is not a game. Don't the fools realize the truth that is also the lie? Who killed Ragnarok? Did anybody kill Ragnarok, or was it Balance being repaired set in place to destroy the Balance?"

Niccolò Belmonte

So, just to reiterate, Niccolò really liked to drink. Alcohol was like a balm on the soul, although he tended to keep that part to himself unless he was going to come straight out and add in the next part -Niccolò was almost certainly incapable of being drunk off his ass. Okay, maybe it wasn't the best use of his self healing powers but it wasn't like he was in a particularly dangerous profession, and he couldn't use his powers on other people anyways. At least this way, they got some use from time to- every day, actually. Niccolò would readily admit that his life was kind of made.

So as he got onto that line between being tipsy and relatively drunk, that was when "Miranda" finally came out of the house. He turned to greet her, but it wasn't clear if she had gotten the message because she started to. Go off. That was the most polite way of putting it. And then she kept going, into things that Niccolò's blurred mind couldn't quite catch. If she had been going off into law, that was a different story. He knew the law like the back of his hand, alcohol be damned.

He delayed for a moment, but as "Miranda" continued rambling, the man managed to get his phone out and start recording what she was saying. He figured that this was all part of that split personality that Paschalis had told him about. In which case, he should not encourage her by interacting with it. Something about not having all the pieces of the puzzle or something like that. Paschalis hadn't been too clear on that point, and Niccolò thought that it was probably because his cousin only had a little more information than he did on the subject.

The aura around her, though. That was the worrying part. It was dark with splashes of red and stormy blue, so different than the one he had seen earlier that day. It was like she was a completely different person. No, that was a bad way of putting it. It was like she had a completely different soul.

His alcohol addled mind took the leap of logic. Well, damn. I wonder if I should ask Joshua to come around.

Scorpion paused for a little bit, watching Niccolo, waiting to see if he did anything. When he didn't, Scorpion snickered. "Does the alcoholic know nothing of philosophy or symbolism? Scorpion will explain as if to a stupid child: Scorpion wishes Darkness to know what Scorpion knows, but Scorpion cannot bear to face that truth. Since Scorpion wants nothing more than the truth to be known, but cannot bear to remember what should never be forgotten, Scorpion stole the memories of everybody involved in Amaya's fate and sealed them away before offering the challenge to break through the barriers set in place to stop anybody from knowing the truth even at the cost of the host's own life, because Scorpion's soul can never rest easy until what she could not live with and shoved into the shadows is dragged back into the light. But, if it only took one day for Ragnarok to die, then why seal six?"

Scorpion giggled, then raised a finger. "Scorpion's sealed memories believe that Ragnarok-" she paused, then was silent, looking up at the sky, her smirk fading. "Scorpion senses a presence." She paused, then looked around, her face unsettled, her appearance showing worry, and then her eyes widened as she shouted "Kora!" right as a black blur shot down from the sky and slammed into her with a feral snarl full of hate and rage.

This new person had two black and purple butterfly wings, and four streaks of color in her hair: red, green, blue, and purple, and these four color streaks also showed up in her aura. She looked like a little child, but she sat on top on Lorelei's unconscious body and was punching her in the face repeatedly. This went on for about five seconds, and then with a gasp, Lorelei, now back in control shot up, grabbed the little girl's shoulders, and just about threw the kid off of her onto the ground as Lorelei stood up, coughing from being tackled and having the wind knocked out of her, her face a bloody mess. Lorelei spat out a glob of blood and screamed, "WHAT THE FUCK YOU STUPID LITTLE SHIT?"

The girl standing across from them had her face scrunched up in rage and made a mixture of hissing and rolling her r's in a nearly feral scream. The two of them just about flew at each other, wrestling, biting, kicking and punching each other, and then finally after about forty seconds when both were sufficiently beaten Lorelei had the little girl pinned down and had a fist raised above the girl's head, ready to punch the kid in the eye again, when suddenly something in her memories triggered, and she fell backwards, clutching her head and moaning with pain. There were only a few flashes of images, but suddenly Lorelei understood, and looked at the visitor, who was stumbling to her feet, with confusion. "You're... you're Amaya? But- but you're supposed to be dead! Didn't Ragnarok kill you?"

The little girl stood up and glared at Lorelei with the one eye that was able to be opened, the other opened shut. The little girl bared her teeth and spat at Lorelei, then put two fingers to a scar at her throat and spoke in a low and raspy voice that sounded like it was struggling just to make any sound. It sounded like it was in German, and then, the little girl jumped, and on her butterfly wings she shot off through the night sky as quickly as she came.

(OOC: what Amaya said in German was, "My mistake, you are not Scorpion, just a person who bears a similar appearance." )

Lorelei watched her go, then looked around and saw Paschalis. "Why are we outside? What the hell was that about? Who was that and why do I know her name is Amaya? And how the fuck was she flying?"

Niccolò Belmonte (with Paschalis de Santis)

Niccolò was used to being called stupid. Frankly, he had stopped caring about stuff like that a long time ago because no matter what anybody said, it took real skill to be able to get through law school with perfect grades and a blood alcohol level that was just pushing illegal. So matters of pride aside, Niccolò did what Niccolò was unexpectedly good at and simply kept the record going, on his laptop after taking a few seconds to get the program on, so that this little mystery could be solved by somebody who actually some of the keys.

"You know, to be perfectly honest, I don't know why you're telling me this at all," the lawyer said sagely in the middle of the feral woman's tirade as he upped the pickup on his laptop's built in microphone. "I'm pretty sure your kind never operated in our area. I don't really have anything to do with this but I mean, if it helps to get things off your chest..."

As the split personality was about to carry on, however, she froze suddenly, looking like a deer caught in headlights. The alcohol was going through Niccolò's veins pretty good but he was still coherent enough to sigh and reach for his phone again. He hit speed dial as another aura came into view.

He cleared his throat a little but before he could even say anything, a collected voice on the other end spoke up. "So the double came out after all?" Paschalis asked, sounding completely unsurprised by the development.

"Mhm. I think it left, though. Her aura went back to normal." Niccolò watched as what appeared to be a young girl suddenly attacked. "Ah, hold on a sec." In the few seconds of calm, the lawyer snapped a picture of the newcomer. "I'm sending something to your email right now. It would probably be best if you came in person, though."

Barely had he finished speaking, however, there was a quick flash of light next to him and his cousin dropped right out of thin air, a small purple marble between two of his fingers. As Niccolò watched, the object abruptly disappeared in a shower of sparkles.

"You sure confiscate some interesting things from your students," the lawyer remarked, looking back at the increasingly one sided fight. "I'm not sure I'm okay with just watching this, though."

"You won't have to," Paschalis said. That was the moment when "Miranda" seemed to undergo a change of a different sort.

Both men watched on as the much younger girl said something in what sounded like German before flying away. That left Miranda to deal with the mess. Soon, she turned her attention to Paschalis.

"Choose the first explanation off the top of your head and tell me what it is," Paschalis recommended coolly. "It'll make much more sense to go about it that way."

To Niccolò, he said, "Send what you've got to Durante. He's always been far better at these sorts of tasks."

Lorelei gaped in disbelief. "Are you freaking serious? 'Choose the first explanation'? BULLSHIT! You know who that was? THAT was Amaya, who, according to somebody calling herself Scorpion, was supposed to have been killed by a serial killer known as Ragnarok SIX HUNDRED FREAKIN' YEARS AGO!"

Lorelei sighed, then put her head in one of her hands. "How the fuck did I get out here anyways? I mean, she was FLYING. With ACTUAL. FREAKING. WINGS. What the fuck kind of technology are you trying to develop here anyways? Genetic Super-soldiers? Sorry, but the internet says the CIA already has those."

(OOC: sorry about short post; feeling somewhat rushed. Lemme know via PM if you want me to change it/add to it.)

Paschalis de Santis (with Niccolò Belmonte)

Paschalis simply looked at the girl for a moment before moving her a few rungs down on his ladder of priorities.

"This really is something that Durante should deal with," he said to Niccolò. For any other person, the tone might have been idle or maybe even amiable. In Paschalis's voice, however, it was merely coldly logical. "Or perhaps la direttrice o la preside. Questa è veramente una situazione inutile." Then as an afterthought, he switched back from Italian to English. "This is not part of my contract."

But despite that, Paschalis was also not allowed to perform lobotomy and end the entire mess quickly. Therefore, he had to deal with the situation at hand himself, with only words, to a girl who had absolutely no idea how deep she had just gotten. Thanks to her outburst, he now had an even better sense of what was the latest circus to make its way to Manta Carlos. And that was still absolutely none of his concern. A vague sense of responsibility was what had led him to dumping her with his cousin but that was where it ended.

"Reevaluate your own lineage for starters," the man said to Miranda in icy calm, "and then come back to me with your questions. Or, better yet, give them to somebody else who has more relevance to the case." Reaching into his pocket, he dug out a fresh bottle of sleeping pills and tossed it at her, ignoring Niccolò's grunt of disapproval. Paschalis was the doctor, after all. He had more of a say in this.

Without giving Miranda the chance to break in, he ordered, "Lock the door, lock the window, throw the key into the hallway, take two pills. If you wake up in your bed in the morning and everything seems to be in the order, repeat the process for a week until you are certain that it will remain that way. After that, just skip to taking the pills. If you wake up anywhere else besides in your bed, even if you might have only rolled out of it at night, still wait a week. If nothing else happens, just skip to taking the pills. If something does happen, you will most likely know and that is when the matter leaves all of our hands."

Actually, now that he thought about it, if he cared enough about the situation, he might be pressed to pay a visit to Ms. Merriweather. If he managed to catch her during one of her trances, he was pretty sure that she would be able to unravel this entire mess in five minutes. Being the vessel of omniscient primal magic would do that. If he did visit her, though, he would have to suffer through her hideously decorated house and to top it off, he would probably owe her favors for the rest of his life. Even if she never called them in -and knowing her, she really never would- Paschalis loathed the idea of owing debts.

Briefly, he considered redirecting Miranda to the woman but decided that in comparison with a lot of issues happening around the island, Miranda's was minor. After all, her problem seemed to mostly be kept in the family, and in a coalition that no longer existed. Even if that coalition did rise again, the times had changed. There were far more ridiculous things to worry about, like the students who kept mysteriously disappearing, the stranger and stranger creatures which were being drawn to the island, and the skyrocketing demonic population. The breaks in reality. Compared with all of that, the problem at hand was so. Tame.

A big hand clapped him on the shoulder. "Late night, then?" Niccolò asked him as they turned back to the house. Paschalis brushed his hand off.

"Maybe for you," Paschalis said dryly. "Excuse me while I commandeer your basement."

His cousin wondered out loud, "Of course, who else would I let do that? It's all yours."

(sorry, this is gonna be a short one, but it's a closer and I have no real motivation for it at this time, but I wanna close it because I wanna start the next thread for lorelei (soon-ish) which will probably be an open one but feel it'd be wrong to do so with this one open)

Lorelei, confused at the strange instructions, let herself get angry. Furious, she stormed back to her room and went to sleep.

In the morning, she really only remembered one thing: Reevaluate your lineage. Lorelei paused on that. For some reason, that seemed to be key. But, that meant......

With hesitation, not sure if it would work or not, hoping it wouldn't impose any major long-distance bills, because she was sure she wasn't in the states, Lorelei found the nearest phone and picked it up, almost second-guessing herself and putting it back down. Biting her lip, she dialed a number she'd nearly forgotten and listened to it ring three times before a woman's voice answered.

"Hello?" Lorelei didn't say anything. The voice on the other side of the phone line repeated the question. "Hello?"

Lorelei bit her lip and responded. "Hello, mother." There was a sharp intake of breath from the other side of the line. "Yeah. It's me. We need to talk. Now."

(OOC: This will probably be the end post for the thread unless you have something else to add or another direction to go, like a breakfast scene or something.)
