Something Different

He'd lost.

Again.

That was... really annoying. And now, worse still, this. He wasn't hurt that badly, really; some bruises, probably, and likely a sprain, but nothing terrible, by any stretch of the term. Not even close to some of what he'd dealt with back home, that much was absolutely certain. Yet still, he was being dragged off to this 'infirmary' place to get 'checked up' all the same, and considering there had required more than one person to do the 'dragging', he didn't exactly have much of a choice, much as he hated it. Worse still when other people were seeing this and whispering, some of which his ears managed to catch. Annoying people...

Whatever was the case, it seemed they were ending up at their destination shortly enough. "Stay here," one of the men demanded, giving the fox boy himself a harsh shove into the room. Forced to try and catch his balance on the way, Kai unfortunately failed and wound up falling to the hard floor, smacking his chin right on it.

Now wasn't that a less than pleasant way to make any sort of entrance...

Grumbling to himself, the shadow fox quickly enough picked himself up off the floor, nursing his chin in one hand that was now sore along with various other parts of him. He was already here, he supposed, and from the scents he could pick up, there was probably only one other person around. At least that wasn't terrible... might as well just sit this through, then, and see how things might go. Who knew, perhaps it would even be worth something to come here.

"Hey! Whoever's here, those annoying people said I needed to get 'checked out' or somethin'," Kai demanded, shoving his free hand into a pocket and keeping his crimson eyes on where he was certain this other person around here was.

It wasn't her normal shift but lately, it seemed like Kida was making vanishing acts part of his weekly schedule. Not that Ekaterina could blame the doctor; any medical job on the island seemed to be even more stressful than normal. Anybody who even remotely liked to go out could be driven insane by all of the work. But if she admitted that out loud, then Paschalis would -politely- never let her hear the end of it. She already had a hard enough time trying to get him to just step foot into the hospital, let alone the operating room. If there was a single viable excuse out there, she was sure that he would take it.

The woman shook her head to herself as she heard the newest patient calling from around the corner. Oh, one of these types again. She wished that people would understand that the infirmary was there to help them, not hurt. But some of them seemed to regard medical institutions the same way that most people would think of concentration camps. Again, regrettably understandable. There were some disgusting people out there in the world and for the magical community, there wasn't any sort of police force to go after them with.

Taking a notepad and pen with her, Ekaterina got up from her desk and headed to where the student was waiting. The sight of a nonhuman in the middle of the infirmary didn't even make her blink an eye anymore.

"Good day, I'm Doctor Kalinina. If you don't mind, I'll need your name, age, and specific purpose for your visit." She stressed the word lightly. "Please be honest with me, and this should proceed pretty quickly."

"Those guys shoved me in here after I lost a fight, that's as far as my purpose here goes," Kai grumbled, letting out an annoyed little scoff in the process. Shifting his jaw around a little, he lowered his hand from his chin shortly enough, soon shoving it, like the other, into a pocket. But then... he'd not actually answered all of the question, had he? Hrmph.

"But whatever, name's Kai, I'm... who knows how old by your terms. Seventeen or somethin', maybe," the fox boy shrugged. So far as he was concerned, there was nothing more to say on that particular matter. He wasn't from around here, after all, and he didn't do places like infirmaries. He healed on his own, however long it took.

"This is a waste of time, anyway; I'm only hurt a little, I'll be fine in a few days or so. Though I guess those folks'll probably make you get somethin' from me since it's my first time around here, huh?" he spoke with a slight sigh, his head tilting slightly to the side. "But I suppose... pleasure to meetcha nonetheless. I'm bettin' this isn't the first time those guys'll be shovin' me in here, so I guess... sorry if I give you any trouble," he concluded, scratching a little at the back of his head. Somehow, the lighter approach seemed the better one for now, but... who knew, really.

She nodded as Kai gave her his information, jotting it down quickly before turning to a nearby computer. "I'm glad to see you're not too badly injured," the doctor said, as she looked up his files. "Don't worry about bothering me -it's what I'm here for. If I wanted to be left alone, I would have just stuck to the labs."

"Does anything particularly hurt?" Ekaterina asked. "Bones that feel broken, dizziness, bleeding, shortness of breath? Any knocks to the head?" She glanced between the student and the screen periodically. "It doesn't look like you have a blood test on file so I can't be sure if standard painkillers would work for you but it's possible that the alternatives would. You would just have to tell me what sorts of things that you definitely do not react well to."

She frowned a bit at a paragraph. Oh, that's interesting. Demonic physiology? Uncommon but nothing she hadn't already seen. Although, this was the most inhuman case so far. That would only complicate the prescription process. Even though some demons could take human medications with no problems, the doctor doubted that Kai was one of them. And anyways, she wouldn't want to risk triggering some kind of allergic reaction.

"Actually, if you don't mind, do you think we could take a blood sample from you sometime? It seems like your physiology is pretty different from the norm and I want to make sure that if anything serious happens, we'd able to help you. We probably shouldn't do it now -any time in the near future would do."

Painkillers? First Kai was certain he'd heard of those, but it sounded like rather a waste of time. Pain was a part of his life; what was the point of getting rid of it if it was just going to inevitably pop back up again? Well, whatever... just one of the many oddities of these 'human' folks, he supposed. One that he didn't need any part of.

"Nothin' to the head, 'sides my chin bein' sore from those guys pushin' me down," the fox boy grumbled, glancing momentarily over to the door he'd been pushed beyond and those three had left beyond. "Nothin' broken or bleeding for now, though... maybe a sprain, but that's nothin' I'm worried about," he added with a slight shrug, shifting that possibly sprained left arm a little even while the hand was still buried in a pocket. Not the most ideal manner of things, so much as to make even him wince just slightly at the pain, but a bit late to be worrying about that right now.

"Fine, though... ya need some blood or somethin', feel free; needles and stuff don't bother me much. Just no gloves or anythin' like that; I'm sick of folks worryin' so much about touchin' me and 'fleas' or whatever they seem to think they'll find that aren't there," he insisted with a slight sigh. "Tired of people worryin' what I might think when they just want to feel the fur a little as well; not like I care that much long's they at least have some respect," he added with some small thought, slipping the hand on his presently uninjured arm out of his pocket. If he was to have blood drawn or anything like that, he was certain he'd need to give over an arm sooner or later, so better that one than the other.

"What's wrong with your arm?" Ekaterina looked up in time to see him wince. She thought that was what she had seen anyways. "Is that where you think the sprain is?" Abandoning the computer in order to get a proper look at it herself, she quickly realized that she was having difficultly making a diagnosis. For one, general practice wasn't really her area anyways -that would be internal medicine, infectious disease. She did have some training in that area but for the most part, her duties at both the hospital and the infirmary consisted of identifying and treating illnesses before another epidemic broke out. Like the one from that summer -the magical epidemic from summer which had, to her knowledge, managed to infect people regardless of species and powers

And it was still in her body, too.

Her head snapped up as soon as Kai mentioned no gloves. "I really don't think that would be such a good idea," she said, mostly calm. There was still a bit of alarm evident on her normally blank face. "The nature of my powers means that it's impossible to make physical contact with any other person. Very, very unwise, actually. If I touch you, you could end up with anything from the common cold to ebola. I'm sorry if it makes you uncomfortable, but as long as I have gloves on, my powers will be fully contained."

Rather than a more direct answer to the latest posed question, Kai merely gave a little shrug... albeit mostly with his presently better arm. Probably a sprain of some kind, as far as he was even concerned, but as he'd said, nothing to be worrying about. It wasn't as though it was the first sprain he'd ever had; not even remotely close. Well beyond what he cared to count, in fact.

That sudden alarm at his demand, though... that was surprising, he had to admit, and a first for that sort of explanation. It was one thing to worry about whatever he might have as practically everyone had before, but what this woman had? The nature of her apparent powers? Well, that was... interesting. Best to test out that little theory, then.

"You... are just wastin' time if you're worryin' about that of all things," the fox boy spoke, reaching out the hand that wasn't in a pocket and, in general, could still move well fairly quickly to brush it momentarily against the woman's cheek. Common cold? Ebola? Hah... that was likely. "There. See? Nothin' at all. I've been around that contagious stuff and whatever else a few times now, and no issue. I'm a shadow fox; I don't get sick," he spoke with a little grin, before tilting his head a little to the side as he considered something.

"So... sayin' that, I'm wonderin' about something. If you're worried about that sorta thing, I bet ya might not spend that much time around other people, so... considerin' I'm not gonna get sick and you wouldn't have to worry about touchin' me, maybe I could... come around more often or somethin'?" he offered, some definite concern present in his voice and features as he scratched a little at the back of his head; a fair change, perhaps, from the ordinarily rather gruff exterior.

She flinched back as Kai swiped his finger across her cheek. All she could think of was the fact that she should have just gone ahead and worn a full veil. The only reason why she hadn't that day was because it was itchy and going out to buy one that didn't always seemed to slip her mind. There were more important things to be doing, always one after another. First settling in, then the dinosaur attack, then the August magical epidemic. She had let her guard down over time.

Of course, of course, Ekaterina remembered. Kids would always be like that, thinking that they were invincible. The sick ones, the hurt ones, they tended more to focus on the fact that they were hurting so those ideas didn't cross their minds as much. And she hadn't really talked to a healthy kid in a while, not one that was a stranger anyways. The ones she already knew trusted her enough to not push that boundary.

"Careful!" The order came out unusually harsh. The doctor's expression was a mix between a glare and a troubled frown as she eyed the student, trying to see if he would spontaneous break out in one of the nastier diseases. Even when a short time had passed without so much as a twitch, Ekaterina moved back a few steps in wariness. At least the explanation he gave her for why he wasn't reacting made sense. Demonic nature, human diseases nullified. Total immunity. It was completely logical.

Magic, however, was not logical.

She shook her head, but it looked less like an answer to Kai's offer and more of a gesture born of anxiety. "Please don't do that again. Even if you have immunity to human illnesses, there was an epidemic around in August that was purely magical in nature. Some of the people who became sick were demonic or part demonic, too. It seems like the only people it didn't effect -besides those who simply never were exposed to it- were a few aliens."

"I -I should do some tests," she said contemplatively, mostly to herself. "We never did nail down exactly what caused it or why it could affect so many people."

"I can't really stop you from coming back." Which was Ekaterina's way of conveying that she was so anxious about something that she couldn't just be blunt about it. "Just don't touch anything if you can help it, please. Dr. Harrington is in charge here and he's very particular about where things go. Dr. Laurie has a severe case of recurring amnesia and if things don't match up with where they've been recorded in her books, it'll probably confuse her a good deal."

Yes... that was about the reaction Kai had expected. If he had to put up with a power like that, though... would he bother much? Maybe not; he didn't exactly care all that much about humans in general, after all. Who knew, though; he had what he had, which was rather a lack of any overt powers or abilities.

"Hrmph... if I happen to catch somethin' like that, then I'll do somethin' about it. I'll live either way; I've managed this long even with my kinda life, after all," he offered with a little shrug, wincing slightly as he momentarily forgot about the sprain. Right... that was still a minor issue, but just for now. He could live with that as well.

"Is it really fine, though, worryin' so much about other people and not even goin' after anythin' for yourself? Still seems like it'd get pretty lonely, whatever ya might say, but... I suppose I'm not you, so I wouldn't know," he suggested. "I'll leave ya alone if ya want, anyway, but how about dinner sometime, maybe? Possibly better with someone who won't likely get sick from anythin' than anyone who will, though I could always pick it up from someplace myself if it's that much of a worry," he offered, tilting his head slightly to the side in curiosity.

She blinked owlishly at the offer before shaking her head. Again, not necessarily in rejection. "A bit inappropriate, isn't it?" she wondered, mostly to herself. Although, she had heard of Dr. Harrington going off with at least one student so maybe that was just what people did?

The woman had absolutely no interest in what direction Dr. Harrington's meetings ultimately ended up at but she did remember hearing that it wasn't completely abnormal for students and faculty to mix together socially. Share the environment, get to know each other, spread some sense of community. She just didn't know where she fell into the mix -she was just a doctor, and a part time one at that.

Although, she did teach Russian now. That was fun. It was too bad there weren't more people interested in that.

People are confusing. That was why she left the psychological things to Wong.

"Like I said, I can't stop you from coming back if you want." Not an acceptance, not a rejection. Just something uncertain and comfortably in between. It could not be said, however, that she was not self aware. "You'll have to forgive me for being noncommittal. I'm more used to letting the cards stay where they fall."

"Here, let me see your arm now. It's best to get these kinds of things out of the way as soon as possible. There's no reason for you to have to deal with it for any longer than you need to if help's already right here." Bandages were always close at hand in the infirmary. Grabbing a roll of elastics from a nearby drawer, she came closer.
