"Close enough," Jackal said with a cheeky grin. That was kind of the deal - starting in purgatory and moving down.

"Well, at the top you've got true believers who sin anyway. At the bottom, you've got hypocrites, those who claim belief but are liars, and the worst of the worst. Scale of the sin matters a lot. We don't do the whole... pride-greed-envy-lust thing. Scale of the sin matters as much as the kind of sin."

"I never did buy into the whole One sin to rule them all spiel," Vanora commented. "It always seemed like a stupid idea but then again, I also never thought very highly of Dante either." Stupid stuck up, overly-pretentious literature. Not to mention creepily in memory of a woman who had little to no interaction with the writer.

"Get on to the good stuff," she said. "The bloody details and all that - what are the punishments? Or is that a secret to us mere mortals?"

"The secret," Jackal said with a note of mocking solemnity, "is that nothing's half as organized as that. There's no one horrible punishment waiting at the bottom. And what we do get on with isn't exactly talk for a place as nice as this."

All nice and decorated as it was. Hell, it wasn't even appropriate to be talking about hell as much as he was.

"You don't have to worry about my hell anyway."

Vanora snorted, fingering her cane. "Fair enough. You'd be surprised what gets talked about at our family gatherings, though. Curses this, bloody sacrifice that. You'd think you'd get used to it after a while but there's always one moron who screws up the status quo and oops, sorry? Did you think you were about to cast yourself a nice little beautification charm? Nope, sorry, now your entire face has been broken in half because you were an idiot who tried to change the structure of your cheekbones with a re-purposed hex."

She tapped at the ground near his feet. "No, I won't go to your Hell. Instead, you'll send me to all the teenagers instead. I know how this goes!"

Jackal snickered at her story, which was... well, obviously something that had actually happened.

"Not like I get a say," Jackal said, "but there's not a lot of teenagers in... wherever you're going. Most people wanna stick to their thirties, if they get a say."

Some did. Some didn't. Jackal wasn't picky. He'd been born the age he was, and he wasn't going to change any time soon.

"What's with the sudden interest in hell, anyway?"

She waved him off. "Oh, just some family bullshit drama and the like, you know," Vanora said. "Blah blah blah, once there was this son of a bitch who was evil and he twirled his mustache mwah haha ha ha. He got reincarnated a few times, each time increasingly bitchier. Then he killed an angel trying to save him from the path. Whoops." She made an exaggerated shrug.

"Angel got obsessed, murdered the fuck outta him after respawning, fell, and then some shit went down and the entire family line got cursed. We westerners got out fine but the eastern half still has it. Something about shitty luck or another." She hummed. "In any case, all this Heaven and Hell bullshit is pretty interesting to the family in general."

Okay, what? Just what? Jackal stared at her for... quite a bit, blinking incredulously. Even by Manta Carlos standards, her story was a story. Like, a story and a half.

"Shit, lady," Jackal said, "that's a hell of a story." What was he even supposed to say to that? That her family was fucking insane? Something like that.

"Not my angels, for the record," he added after a moment.

She grunted. "No, I'd imagine not. Was more of a traditional sort. Actually met the fellow a while back after it re-ascended. Decent sort, kind of naive. Apparently had itself reforged or some nonsense like that. I pointed it off the island to do good works elsewhere and don't expect to see it back in this lifetime."

"Anyways, we're no stranger to the supernatural," Vanora said. "This is just the tip of the iceberg for us. Every other generation or so, the eastern half gets ravaged by roaming demons or such and such. This is just normal for us." She was quite nonchalant about it.

"We're traditional," Jackal said, a note of protest in his voice. Why did everyone think he wasn't traditional? For that matter, he was more traditional than most of the people on the island. No one could keep their religious beliefs straight. Everyone kept changing.

"It's not really a demon if they're eastern, is it?"

"Sure, if you say so," Vanora agreed. Everybody was traditional in their own ways, after all. She wasn't about to hang a nail on the point. "And oh, who even knows. Demons, malicious spirits, spirits of the dead - the point is that they have it out for that eastern branch. Feel a bit sorry for them but there's nothing I can do really, except throw some fireballs in their direction."
