"I'm about as old," Jackal said, "if we're counting. But no, I don't get any older. I'll be like this till Judgement day. Upside of being immortal. And I got a nice age for it. I can't help but feel bad for some of these fuckin' people walking around looking like they're twenty years old forever. At least I look like an adult."

Jackal paused a moment, then cracked a grin.

" 'Scuse my language, miss."

Vanora waved him off. "Fuck that shit. I've never been a fan of all them proper things. As far as I'm concerned, you've just dropped down to my level." Which, honestly, was the way things should be. Why should she have to rise to somebody's level when she could just knee them in the balls and bring them down to hers?

"Never could understand all of these eternal teenagers," she continued with a tsk. "They're all just babies and they're off having sex and babes of their own? Most of them aren't even mentally adults. Embarrassing, it is."

Such language for someone so old! It was refreshing. He kind of liked it.

"If you're fifteen, one year of your life is a fifteenth of all the time you've lived. When you're a million, it's a fraction of a fraction of a percent. They're going off what they know, basically. It's what they do. You know, Lord, what fools these mortals be!, only it's more like Lord, what fools these teenagers be!"

"I suppose I'll see you in Hell one day," Vanora said matter-of-factly, "because according to all laws of scholarly insanity, I'm supposed to take an apprentice sometime in the near future." Theoretically, she could take an adult on instead but generally speaking, the younger the apprentice, the easier it would be for them to adopt their master's ideas on magic. It was something very important for Vanora's branch but she refused to take on anybody under a certain age simply because it felt far too much like child-grooming. She was old, not amoral. People deserved to have a choice in their lives.

"They'll probably drive me to sin at this rate."

Jackal let out a small cackle of delight. Oh boy, he definitely liked her. She was just his kind of person.

"Nah," Jackal said. "You wouldn't go to my hell." He gave her a quick once over, confirming his observation to himself. "You'd be going to someone else's hell. The people there aren't as handsome as I am."

She grimaced. "Knowing my luck, it'll be the worst hell of them all. In some school full of hotshot teenagers who think they're too good for down to earth, practical things. Kind of like here, actually." She muttered off to herself thoughtfully. "Maybe I'm already dead and buried in that case."

"What kind of hell do you run anyways, mister?" She fully expected it to be something dreadful and simply accepted it. The world was a harsh place. Brutal things happened. C'est la vie or some other shit like that. "The one with a thousand runways?"

Oh, it was dreadful all right, and Jackal didn't get to talk about it all that much. A part of him delighted in the chance to, and a part of him was just looking for a reaction.

"My hell doesn't split people up like that. Everyone just ends up mixed in all together, and then the people in charge just go wading through the bodies. Technically they can run, but there's never far to really run. No escape and all that. Real scary stuff."

Just like him, mask or no mask.

"So you just mix in all the sinners together and what, torture them for eternity?" Vanora asked, not at all perturbed. "That is. Surprisingly normal and boring. Do they at least change up what kind of torture is done every few decades? How about for the ones who try to escape? Do you at least give them the illusion of a fighting chance to see the hope destroyed every single time they fail?" She had a lot of strong opinions on Hell in general. "Have you considered switching from physical torture methods to mental?"

"Hell," Jackal said pointedly, "kind of varies. There's gates, and we shove em through. Different types of hells. Depends on how bad you are, sort of. That said, we dump 'em all in at the start. Like a big sorting machine, the worst you are, the lower you get driven over time. Everyone starts normal enough near the top, and then it gets worse and worse over time. Driving the worst downward, they continue to fall. That's the idea, basically. First one isn't so bad. Not good, but not so bad."

There was a lot of nuance to any given hell, but his was particularly nuanced.

"Up near the top, mostly we just watch. If we see someone who fits our criteria, we help in chasin' them down and down."

She hmphed. "Well, that's certainly something, at least. Sounds like that nine rings bullshit, only you start at purgatory and get dumped in progressively shittier Hells." Vanora thought it over for a moment. "It's an interesting business plan but I'm not quite sure I agree with how it's implemented quite yet. What exactly are the two extremes on this scale?"
