Lucianne Lovejoy

A pink-haired young lady ran to the front door of the shooting range, only to stop in her tracks as she saw her doppelganger approaching from the opposite direction. Both young women stared at each other, silently having a conversation. Lucille Dresden was a refugee from Halcyon but she was also Lucianne Lovejoy, a native of Manta Carlos. They shared the same memories so theoretically, they could act entirely indifferent, drowned in a sea of billions of Lucis. But both knew the consequences of doing so; in other universes, Lucille had already lost herself in the memories of other Lucis who had not had their worlds destroyed. This would not be one of them, if only because Lucille still had a bit of spite left in her.

But that meant that Lucille was at odds, trying to find something to fill the void. It was agreed that Lucianne's parents would never become her parents - the line between Lucis was hazy enough. Each one was, technically, an individual. They would maintain that illusion for as long as possible, ignoring that across all timelines and worlds, Luci was ultimately a singular entity. So Lucille would have her own niche, eventually. Her own relationships separate from Lucianne. But not now, it was too soon.

Apologetically, Lucianne smiled to herself and Lucille took the opportunity to bow out, gone to explore the few places that Lucianne had not yet explored in this world on the island. With herself dismissed, Lucianne looked around for Jude.

Jude liked the range, and the range liked him. Since he'd gained the ability to summon guns, he'd been there at least every other day. He was rusty and out of practice, and he had more guns than any one person probably needed to practice with. After a week he was on the first name basis with the guy who owned the range (or at least the guy who was running it most of the time), and he waved at him through the window as he headed towards Lucianne.

He'd totally missed the other Luci being there, and he gave the one waiting for him a friendly wave, heading right on over.

"So," Jude said, jumping right into it. "You've never been at the range before, right?" Probably better to start from the basics.

Lucianne Lovejoy

"We- no, I haven't been to one before," Lucianne said somewhat distractedly. She shook her head a bit to clear it and then focused her attention solely on Jude. It was a bit hard to concentrate on anything now that there was another one of her in this world but she would manage eventually. She always did.

"Is there anything I should know before going in?" she asked.

It was her first time. Not too long ago, Jude had been there with Zora, explaining to her all the ins and outs of being on the range. It was familiar to him, and it felt oddly normal as he ran her through the rules of the range, usual protocols, and what she could expect.

"If you want to shoot," Jude explained, "we can rent you a handgun. Or if you want to watch me, you can. It's up to you."

Well, technically she'd rent herself a handgun. His exception let him have his, not rent others.

"Do you think I should?" Lucianne asked curiously after Jude had finished going over some of the basic. There was a distant worry in her head that she might accidentally hit somebody, even though the possibility was so very low. It was one of those illogical fears about guns, she supposed; everybody treated them so severely in most worlds. She hadn't been this anxious even when she was learning archery with Liliana and that was more or less the same concept.

In any case, Jude was there and he knew what he was doing even if she didn't so that was something, at least. She shook her head. "Never mind. Yes, actually. Let's go for it. I might as well, right?"

Jude was going to say it's up to you when Lucianne abruptly came to her own decision.

"I'd recommend getting a Glock 17," Jude said. "You'll need to rent it yourself, considering I don't have... you know, the right to do so. I have an exemption that lets me use my guns, but I can't rent other ones. Kind of stupid, but that's bureaucracy for you."

He waved her over to the rental counter, going to check in himself, digging that exact exemption permit out of his wallet as he did.

"Get hearing protection!" He called back over his shoulder.

Lucianne had absolutely no idea what Jude was talking about (lies, she did, in some other life) so she did her best to simply memorize his words and repeat them to the person at the rental counter. When she had what she assumed was the correct firearm and Jude's suggested hearing protection, she made her way back to his side. It felt weird holding the gun, almost like meeting an old friend whose previous meeting ended on a sour note.

Jude didn't exactly carry guns. Not on his person. He summoned them, drawing them from thin air, and the gun only existed as long as he was holding it, more or less. If he dropped them, they vanished before they hit the ground, and it had taken a while to get in the habit of that. Before it had been bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, reload. Now it was almost the same, only he ended up dropping a gun and pulling a 'new' gun instead.

His habits were going to be absolutely ruined if he ever had to deal with a normal gun again.

Jude had a gun in his hand--an M1911--when he stepped up to the range, waving Lucianne over. He ran her through a basic demonstration, and then signaled for her to give it a try. They'd have given her the safety lecture at the counter, so he wasn't that worried.

Lucianne Lovejoy

Lucianne felt a tight sensation in her chest as she lifted the gun. What if she were no good at this? What if she were too good at it? A distant part of her still associated guns with bloody, senseless murders and it chimed in at the moment, reminding her that at any moment, she might become a mindless serial killer just by mere proximity to a gun. Nonsense, of course. But then again, with that sort of irrational fear, maybe it was a phobia?

She looked down the gun with a shaky breath. No, it couldn't be, not if she were right there at that moment doing what she was about to do. It was. Okay, actually. A little weird and unreal but coming from her, that really was rich wasn't it?

Aiming best she could at the target in front of her, she fired off a hesitant shot. It hit. Nowhere near the bullseye, but it hit.

Lucianne blinked a bit and breathed out. Okay.

It was pretty normal to do well on a first shot. It was more than just beginners luck--guns tended to work the way people thought they did. The issue was that every shot after the first, people tended to mentally try and accommodate the kickback. They tensed right before shooting, and that let their shots go wide.

"Try and relax," Jude said. "Take a deep breath, and fire on the exhale. Don't flinch. Let yourself be loose." It wasn't the first time he'd advised someone through this, and he doubted it'd be the last.
