EVARISTUS "EVAN" SIDERALIS
Thirty-Three - October 18th - Male - Human - Citizen - Unemployed
APPEARANCE

Evan Image Reference, art by Skele-Tea

Elsewhere in the world, Evan's appearance would be considered unusual, but on the island he's nothing special. He's missing his right eye, a nasty scar in its place that he keeps hidden under his eye patch. He has plenty of scars both visible and hidden, with the most noticeable being a small scar that runs diagonally across his lips, and one on the left side of his jaw beneath his ear that cuts through his facial hair. His hair is bright red and kept short, and while it never becomes a true beard, he always has some amount of scruff. His remaining eye is a very light blue.

Evan is 6'3" and muscular. There's nothing lean or slim about him, being all muscle, and his shoulders are equal parts broad and slumped. His usual expression is best described as inexpressive, like he's bored with whatever the situation is and uninterested in it entirely.

While Evan's outfit varies, his usual gear is very combat related. He's never without his dog tags, although whether he has it hanging out or not tends to vary. Combat boots, fingerless gloves with some kind of padding, tactical vests, you name it--he always looks like he just walked out of a military surplus store.
PERSONALITY
Evan is a highly contradictory person, the product of his situation as much as anything else. While Evan is at his heart a good person, a person who gave up a comfortable, wealthy life in order to help others, he spent two and a half years as a glorified hitman, doing the work of a corrupt government and killing his own kind. He recognizes the blood on his hands, and it holds him back socially. He considers his appearance on Manta Carlos to be a stroke of good fortune, and it's only recently that he's accepted he's not going to be pulled back at any moment.

Based on his appearance, most would assume that Evan was quick to jump to violence, but that couldn't be farther from the truth. Spending his time in an environment where any violence was met with harsh consequences, Evan's learned to play by the rules and then some. He's experienced in working exactly within the confines of the law, playing people in power against each other. He has no qualms about snitching to screw over someone he dislikes, and he has no issues with kissing ass to work his way up the ladder. He plays dirty whether socially or physically, and considers honor a useless bit of sentiment.

In day to day life, Evan tends to be very coarse. He swears a lot, and makes no effort to cut back around kids, either. He treats kids like mini-adults, which is something that other adults hate and teenagers tend to love.
ACTIVE ABILITIES
Duplication: Evan possesses the gift of duplication, and is cable of making four additional duplicates of himself. All duplicates share the same limitations, and can merge via physical contact. Merging two duplicates leaves the resulting Evan in peak condition, with all the knowledge and experiences from both duplicates.

In the event a duplicate dies, their body dissolves shortly after their death. All remaining duplicates are immediately aware of the death, and after 24 hours they'll be able to create a new duplicate to replace it.

Items in Evan's possession are duplicated without limitation.

Taste Manipulation: Evan is capable of changing the taste of anything within eyesight of him. This effect can be permanent or temporary as he wishes.
BIOGRAPHY
No content warnings
  • Evan is originally from a parallel reality, one without non-human supernaturals.
  • The Sideralis family was old, important, and heavily gifted, with almost every member of the family possessing some kind of special ability. While offering help to other gifted humans, they did so not out of any good intentions, but instead to capitalize on the abilities of others.
  • Evan had no interest in taking advantage of other gifted humans, and was all but disowned at a young age when he abandoned his business degree to pursue a career in firefighting.
  • He moved out at the age of twenty-six, getting an apartment near his work and speaking to his family only on major holidays.
  • A few years later, a group of gifted humans launched a massive series of terrorist attacks worldwide, causing thousands of deaths and declaring their supremacy over humanity.
  • Aberrants, as they were dubbed by a foreign government, became public enemy number one. Hate crimes were common, with the government struggling to keep up and devise restrictions. Aberrants who revealed themselves were almost all killed, making the situation increasingly worse.
  • Evan kept his head down, hiding what he was and hoping it would blow over before long, and his family did the same.
  • The government, in an attempt to minimize the victims and calm the situation, asked that all aberrants turn themselves in for protection, but Evan had no intention of taking them up on it.
  • Unfortunately, he didn't get the choice. His family were murdered, whether by a mob or a business rival, and Evan himself was taken into custody, both a captive and a guest of the US government.
  • Months later, willing to cooperate with the government and having nothing to lose, Evan ended up joining a task force on behalf of the government composed of other aberrants. They were in charge of handling aberrant related crimes, as well as retrieving aberrants for the government.
  • While forbidden to leave, Evan's position improved a great deal with the new position. Aberrants were still considered subhuman, but Evan was 'one of the good ones', afforded a life of comparative comfort. Most importantly, Evan knew there would be no life for him as an outed aberrant in wider society.
  • Without any warning, Evan went from lying down on his bunk to out in the woods of Manta Carlos, having abruptly been relocated to a completely different reality for no apparent reason. He'd been swapped with the Evaristus of the other world, taking his place, although he wouldn't find that out immediately.
Evan wasn't born in the world of the Manta Carlos Islands. He was born, raised, and lived his life in a parallel world, similar and yet different in a multitude of ways. The most significant was the almost complete absence of non-human supernaturals. While the Manta Carlos islands are littered with non-humans, Evan's world simply had an awful lot of super powered humans, all living in secret and slowly coming together, whether by their own will or otherwise.

The Sideralis family was old and important, helped out in the latter in no small part by their powers. While they were never blatant about them, the ability to read minds could help an awful lot in business deals, and the ability to detect metals helped a lot when prospecting. Every power had its own specific use, and the Sideralis family were excellent at capitalizing on them, earning themselves a great deal of money and influence over the years. They would help super powered humans control their powers, but almost always with the either explicit or implied understanding that the super powered humans in question would help them in turn.

So it was to the families great disappointment when Evaristus--Evan by that point--showed absolutely zero interest in the family hobby of taking advantage those less fortunate then them. While Evan was never quite disowned, it was made painfully clear to everyone that Evan was the family disappointment when he dropped out of his business degree to peruse a career in, of all possible things, firefighting.

While his power frequently helped him in secret, it was far from the best possible application of it, only adding to his parents frustrations. When Evan was twenty-six, he moved out, getting an apartment near his work with the money he'd saved off, and opted to speak to his family only on major holidays.

His parents adopted, much to his great annoyance.

While it wasn't the life his parents would have wanted for him, it was the life he enjoyed, and it would have remained that way right until everything went horribly, horribly wrong. An organization acting on behalf of all the super powered humans of the world launched a series of simultaneous terrorist attacks in multiple capital cities worldwide, sending the death toll into the thousands. They declared their supremacy over humanity, and simultaneously revealed the existence of supernatural powers to the world.

The worlds reaction was not good. Panic set in almost immediately, and misinformation abound. The government attempted to declare those with powers to be the overly wordy humans with extranatural abilities, but when a foreign government declared them all aberrants, that was what stuck.

Evan was 'stealth', with only his family knowing the truth about him, but even still the fear was very real. Extremists called for death to all aberrants, and even the more moderate among the humans called for restrictions and registrations. As some aberrants began to come out, revealing their powers to the public, the situation got even worse, and when one prominent celebrity was shot on television, anti-aberrant mobs and militias began to form.

While Evan never had any proof, he's fairly sure that many of those killed in the first few months weren't aberrants at all, just humans with slight differences or people against them. It hardly mattered. There was no conclusive way to prove who was or wasn't a aberrant without the aberrant in question using their powers, and no aberrant was ever going to demonstrate their powers on demand to an angry mob.

It didn't really matter in the long run. Every dead body, whether aberrant or human, was declared a aberrant and only served to rile up the mobs more. Accusations flew, and as the months wore on even the most moderate and accepting among the humans began to suggest that if all aberrants were under government protection, at least they wouldn't be at risk of being randomly murdered by a mob.

Evan had no plans to reveal himself. There was nothing to gain, only risk. While they never spoke of it, the entire conversation going unmentioned at family dinners, it was clear his family felt the same way. Even when the government announced that all aberrants should turn themselves in for 'protection', the family did nothing.

Until they were all murdered. Evan never found out quite what happened. He isn't sure if the people doing the killing knew they were aberrants, or if it was just an accusation by a business rival to get them out of the way. He just knows that one day he got home to find military men waiting at his door to take him into custody.

His family were dead, and they were aberrants, which meant he must be one too.

Evan spent the next six months in legal limbo, not quite a captive and not quite a guest of the US government. He was forbidden to leave, but treated fairly nicely, helped in no small part by the fact that Evan was one of the only aberrants willing to actually demonstrate his powers. With his family dead and his identity public, his odds of a normal life were abysmal, and Evan didn't see an issue with appeasing the people who were suddenly in charge of his life by showing off what he could do.

It worked out for him in the long run. While many aberrants remained effectively prisoners, confined to single rooms and told to wait it out, Evan was selected for a new team--and a chance at a new life. While many of the others selected felt mislead, Evan never believed it was going to be anything other than a glorified hit squad staffed by aberrants. With their gifts, they could do things no human could, taking missions that were far too risky. In many cases, their causes were good, leaping into action to rescue hostages and disable other aberrants when normal humans wouldn't do.

In many cases they weren't, doing things that would remain classified forever, even if they were done directly under government direction.

Evan lived a life of not quite comfort, but close enough to it. He had a decently sized room. He had a common area to visit between missions. The ankle tracker was a constant presence, but it didn't stop him from playing basketball or working out at the gym with the rest of the team.

It wasn't good, but it was better than life outside as an outed aberrant. Evan had no goals or plans, but he didn't have any room for any either, so he simply accepted things as they were, refusing to count on a happy future that wasn't going to happen.

Until it did, more or less. One minute Evan was sprawled out on his bunk late in the evening, and the next he was standing in a park next to a trail, the distant lights of the city visible. There was no warning, no feeling off oddness, no pop. He was just at home one minute, and elsewhere the next.
RESOURCES
Evan has more or less nothing to his name. He's living in a halfway house after being released from the Islets.
EXTRA INFO
Those of Evan's age might generally recognize him, although he looks a fair bit different from the original Evaristus, who he replaced. His alternate universe twin didn't even go by 'Evan', but it is possible someone might have known his older self, even if they were like night and day.

Notable Features: Military gear, missing right eye with eyepatch, numerous scars. Wears an ankle monitor which is generally hidden under his clothes.

Physical Quirks: American accent, overall military demeanor, although not terribly strict.

Power Summary: There can be five of him at a time, and can re-merge these duplicates to gain their experiences and knowledge. Can duplicate items along with himself. Can manipulate the taste of things.

Reputation: Anyone who reads the news will know that Evan killed his 'parents'. Evan took a plea deal for excessive self defense, and there was some back and forth on that.

Misc Information: There was an Evaristus on the island, but they looked noticeably different, and Evaristus was a bit of shut-in. If you want to have known him, let me know and we can talk it out!
