Lucianne Lovejoy

"Guns scare me for some reason, I'm not sure why," Lucianne said. It was just a fact, said somewhat quizzically. "It's not any different from people having such dangerous powers around but there's something about guns in themselves that make me feel weird? I think it's because I've never actually been around one in my life."

She tilted her head. "When you and Annie have gotten to that point, let me know? I mean, I've always been curious but I keep thinking things like, what if my finger slips? What if I drop it and it goes off. Somewhat silly things like that."

Gun's scared her? Jude raised an eyebrow slightly, wondering if that was going to be a sticking point between them. Jude liked guns. For him, they were very much a normal part of life. His house had several concealed guns located around the house, and his father had made very sure that Jude knew where they were and how to use each and every one, just in case.

Not that it had helped.

"Most guns," Jude explained, "have safeties against that. Like, you could toss a glock around and it'd never go off, because it has a two-switch system. You have to press a button down and then pull the trigger, and only an idiot wouldn't have the safety on anyway."

Any of those idiots who walked around with their trigger on the finger earned Jude's intense disdain.

"When I get that, I can take you up to a range and show you what I mean. They're really not scary or anything."

"I think I'd like that," she said, even though the idea gave her internal shivers a bit. Lucianne did her best to push those away. It wasn't like she hadn't seen worse in any of the worlds she existed in. "Sorry, I know it's illogical of me. It's just that in most worlds for some reason have this obsession with guns being super dangerous and taboo. Not quite sure why, it seems a bit stupid when we have literal gods walking among us."

"Honestly, it's kind of weird the island even regulates them," Jude admitted, scratching at the back of his neck. "Most of my classmates are way more dangerous than a gun. And not letting...."

Jude trailed off. It wasn't a topic he wanted to get into, not right then, and he glanced away.

"It's fine. Most people don't like guns, even back in Halcyon. The only reason I was good with them was because my dad insisted. It was... a family thing, I guess?"

"It seems like your life is so interesting," Lucianne sighed, skirting around what felt like a potentially dangerous subject. "Compared with people around here, I'm just. Me. Normal, you know. I guess that's not necessarily a bad thing but it just feels like I don't have much happening at any given time."

"But it's cool that you even have family things," she said after a pause. "We don't really, with the exception of the part spirit thing. It doesn't really get brought up all that much."

"I mean," Jude started to point out, "you have seemingly infinite number of family things. Just not with you." Assuming he was even understanding right.

"It was just me and my dad, mostly. My mom was... not in the picture. My grandparents were around, but generally unpleasant, and we basically only saw them on holidays."

He barely thought of them, if he was being honest.

She made a face. "It's strange sometimes," Lucianne said. "I remember a bunch of things that have happened across all my lives and I've loved so many people - but it's not really me, is it? Or rather, it's not this me. But all of the me's, we're all so similar in personality that there's barely any difference at all."

"I used to think that I was just one branch of the same being," she said with a frown. "But maybe that's wrong and I'm just one puppet being played." It made quite a bit of difference, she thought, being allowed to grow her own way versus being controlled into each direction. "I guess it comes down to whether or not you think it's experiences that make a person or if they're just, just them."

"Experiences make a person," Jude said. On this? This was something he could actually talk about. "Officer Genovese--the guy I live with--is also me. He's the me from this world. But no one would ever try and say we're the same. He's had totally different experiences, and in the end he's a different person. We have a lot in common, and we get along pretty well, but we aren't the same. Our experiences shape us. They make us who we are."

There was a certainty in his voice that you didn't generally get from thought experiments, because for him, it was a very real thing: Something he'd thought about more than he'd ever care to admit to anyone.

"I think I'd rather believe in that," Lucianne said after a thought. "It's a much nicer idea than the other one. But what about the realities where the only difference is what you wear on a particular day? And then all the branches are the same except for that one spot. And it doesn't happen just once but many times over." For a moment, she stared into the distance, eyes blank.

"I like being able just to focus on this reality, I think," she said with a shudder. "Everything else is just. Too much. Far too much."
