"Alright class, please hand back the CD's if you are done with your homework, and we can begin the lesson."

After he said this, Sora turned on an old looking TV with a built in VCR, and slipped in a tape. A song started playing. It was a song from the 1980's called 'Money for Nothing' by a band called Dire Straits.

"Now then, what is the purpose of this class again?"

He wasn't asking anyone in particular, but he hoped at least one of his students would know part of the answer by now.

"Better yet, what is music?"

A question without a solid answer, and with many good ones. To Sora, Music was a gateway into one's soul. As well as a great force that could bring people together.

Paschalis de Santis

He wasn't a student, sure, but the last Paschalis checked, there was absolutely nothing in the rules that said he couldn't sit in on somebody else's class if he wanted to. Remembering at last that there was a music appreciation class scheduled to start just a bit after his powers class, he finally got around to sneaking into it. As luck would have it, he was just barely late. It seemed like the teacher had just started the lesson.

A quick survey of the room told him that the first row was almost totally empty. Oh, right, this is how it normally is, isn't it? He had forgotten that college and church had a lot in common -nobody liked sitting all the way up front.

Well, their loss. First row, the seat on the far right. Paschalis figured that he could stay out of everybody's attention there.

Faye was scheduled to be in a music type of class, and wasn't sure what to expect. She was already running late because she overslept and actually took effort into getting ready instead of rushing so, she was more than an hour late for school. Oh well, she thought to herself. What is the worst that can happen.

She rushed down the hall to her class, it was a lot further than she originally thought. She was a bit worried of what her teacher would thing of her being late, but she tried to push the thought out of her mind for now.

Her bag containing her books got heavier the closer she got to the classroom. It was a relief when she saw that it was only a few feet away now. She opened the classroom door to hear the teacher asking the students what was music.

She quickly rushed to an empty seat.

Being one of the first classes Krystopher had ever had without someone he knew with him, he took great care to sit by himself. He already knew he was going to be awkward and wanted to spare anyone around him some of the residual emotions he knew he'd be generating. The boy hadn't even known that there were such classes in a normal school, which was just enough to interest him into trying it. So far it wasn't too bad, but now he was expected to speak.

Glancing around the room, he saw a girl quickly enter the classroom and sit down. Had she been late, perhaps? The though had never occurred to Krys that he could be late, always having been heavily scolded and punished for being even seconds late. That was most likely one of the main differences between being home schooled and an actual school. Boy, this would take a lot to get used to.

As for the questions, they weren't ones the boy had ever asked himself before. Scientifically, music was the manipulation of sound waves into pleasing ones, certain beats and rhythms resonating better with some people than others. He was sure the teacher wasn't asking for that answer, though, since that would have been the easy one. It felt like the teacher was searching for something, making Krystopher know he couldn't deliver. The only music he really listened to were the soundtracks to the video games he played and the anime he watched, so if there was something in a different genre of music he should have picked up on by now he surely hadn't.

He kept looking around the room, hoping someone would give the correct answer for both his and the teacher's sakes. The music playing on the television, however, was different from anything he or his family had listened to before. His eyes soon fastened on the screen, trying to take in what he could. Maybe he could find the answer in this song?

As mandated by the academic standards of the school, Aurora was often forced to do things she did not necessarily want to do. One of these things was the supervision of new music teachers and their assistants, but this hesitation wasn't because of a dislike for the academic review process; in fact, it was quite the opposite.

Aurora liked to listen in on her subordinates lessons; they often managed to teach her a thing about music that she hadn't yet thought of.

The main problem lay in the fact that Aurora was attending these classes as their boss, which often skewed the teachers into altering their lessons. Aurora did the same, even if her only boss was the headmistress. It was quite literally performance anxiety.

The lesson was already in session when the mage peeked through the door. Great, late to her own subordinate's evaluation. Such a good way to start the day right?

No longer was she dressing in her normal school attire, but instead preferring warmer mage robes and cloak. Lifting an arm through the long, flowy sleeves, Aurora waved at the teach and made her way to a corner seat so that the teacher could resume his lesson relatively uninterrupted.

At least he was certainly confident; he was going to go far if he kept that up.

"Well, it's alright if you don't know. Music has different meanings for different people."

He politely waved back to his new boss as she entered the room, but his tempo did not change as he turned his attention back to the class.

"Personally, I see music as a gateway into one's soul. A way of conveying how one feels in a way that everyone can understand with words instead of action. Now, for some of you, there are spells that require incantations. And knowing your notes is important for this, because if the incantation is not performed properly.......bad things can happen."

As he said this, he moved to the locker in the back of the room, and grabbed his guitar, and put on a device that was meant to hold a small instrument in front of his face.

"Now, as I said before, music has many meanings. Because of this, it is often inspired by many things. Pain, happiness, love, anger, these are powerful emotions, and if used properly, one can create a melody that makes people feel these things. However, I'll be focusing on the positive side of the emotional spectrum mostly."

He grabbed an empty chair as he walked to the front of the class, and turned off the T.V.

"The song I'm about to perform is one that got me through some hard times."

As he sat down, he grabbed a Harmonica out of one of the many pockets in his jacket, placing it in the device he was wearing before playing a few notes.

"Yep, got the right one. You know, In my 6 tours, I collected so many of these that I sometimes forget which one is in which pocket."

After a minute or so, Sora started playing the chords for the song, and brought the harmonica to his mouth to play it as needed.

"~I want to live,
I want to give
I've been a miner for a heart of gold.
It's these expressions
I never give
That keep me searching for a heart of gold.

And I'm getting old.
Keep me searching for a heart of gold
And I'm getting old.

I've been to Hollywood
I've been to Redwood
I crossed the ocean for a heart of gold.
I've been in my mind,
It's such a fine line
That keeps me searching for a heart of gold.

And I'm getting old.
Keeps me searching for a heart of gold
And I'm getting old.

Keep me searching for a heart of gold.
You keep me searching and I'm growing old.
Keep me searching for a heart of gold
I've been a miner for a heart of gold.~"

There were a few more rounds of the guitar chords before the song was over and he set his guitar down on the stand.

"Earlier I said that incantations that are not properly performed can have terrible results. A friend of mine......the drummer from my band, died while trying to protect me from an angry fan. his barrier spell worked perfectly, but because he didn't use the proper inflection, he paid the price for it with his life."

Of course, he was telling a small lie, and the drummer was still alive. He just couldn't speak anymore. Still, he was trying to drive home a point.

"So, your homework for today will be practicing your vocal notes. But we still have lots of time left for today, so we'll be studying some of the greatest musicians to ever grace the world with their presence."

As he said this, he turned the T.V. back on, ejected the Dire Straits video and Inserted a Rockumentary about Led Zeppelin.

Paschalis de Santis

Oh, now that's rather hard, isn't it? As a person who couldn't really play any instruments -what did Nazareth count as anyways? A grass whistle? Just plain old magic?- Paschalis was pretty impressed with anybody who could alternate between two in the same song. The lecture part of the lesson was lost on him, though, simply because it felt a bit too touchy feely for his tastes.

He stared blankly over the music teacher's head once the song had ended. Ah, it always comes back to people dying, doesn't it? At the academy, it seemed like it would be easier to count people who didn't know somebody who had died horribly. And ever since that dinosaur attack a few months back, that number of people who didn't was dwindling down.

Mentally, Paschalis made a note to himself to talk to the teacher afterwards. For one, this was a music appreciation class, not a powers class. And as much as he personally appreciated having some of the work shifted off of him, he didn't think it was a good idea to be scaring kids straight across the curriculum. It wasn't good for their health.

Although, now that he thought about it, that was a fantastic way to get through to kids who actually had sound based powers. He added it to his list of lectures that he should give sometime but might never get around to.

When Faye sat in her seat, she took out a notebook and pen in case she needed to write anything down. The teacher was talking about how music had different meanings for everyone. He was right, it all really depended on how you interpreted the song you heard. Sometimes reading the song and listening to it could be two completely different experiences.

Faye began to doodle on her notebook as she listened. Sometimes doodling made her listen more clearly. She heard him walk to the back of the class and lifted her head to see what he was doing. He was getting a guitar and put something on himself. He began talking about how music had different meanings again, and Faye mentally agreed with him.

Faye watched as he grabbed an empty chair with half interest, he was going to perform for them she thought, and sure enough he said it aloud. She put her pencil down and closed her notebook. He had her full attention now. After he put his harmonica in the device, it all made sense to what it was, Faye was confused to what it was at first.

The song he started to play was very beautiful to Faye's ears. She really enjoyed it. Faye closed her eyes and listened to his song, she wasn't sure what it was she heard behind his voice. She listened as he played a few more chords with his guitar and the music stopped. She kept her eyes closed as he began to tell a story about a friend of his that passed away. She was amazed at how his friend risked his life, but was also in awe in a way. She's never really had a friend in her life that would do that. But then again she never had a friend.

Faye listened as he told them about their homework. A vocal assignment? She thought. She could handle that. She watched as he turned on the T.V. They would be learning about Led Zeppelin. Her attention was shifted back to her notebook with doodles. She opened it and began doodling again as the video played on.

So there wasn't a specific answer to the question? Krys didn't think such a thing was possible. A question was supposed to have an answer, at least that was what he had always been told. Even further confused, the boy put his head further down into his arms. At this rate, his head would start to spin.

He raised his face for the song the teacher was singing, enraptured again by the different kind of music. He hadn't heard guitar and harmonica combined, nor the kind of lyrics that accompanied them. Krys wondered what kind of music this was, trying to memorize what he was hearing. As for what he felt, well, that was a far more difficult question.

Drifting off into thought, Krys tried to think of music that made him feel. The music he listened to were from games and anime that he had used to escape. He went to a place where he didn't feel small or used. In this place he was a hero, helping other heroes to save the day. It would never happen in real life, but in that little world it made him feel like he could have a meaning.

Unconsciously, he started to hum one of his favorite songs. Translated to english, the music was titled, "The King's Love is for his People". The character whose theme it was would always be one of Krys' favorites, his story one that made the boy feel better when times were hard. He didn't seem to care if anyone heard him, the music helping him to feel better as he learned about a new band and type of music.

If Aurora could admit anything, it was the fact that the guy certainly had chops. Despite being in music for most of her known life, those that could play almost well, anything, impressed her. Even more so those young prodigies that enjoyed picking up an instrument or singing just for the hell of it. A harmonica was certainly special.

What she was concerned about was not the teacher, but instead the class itself. Music appreciation was something that she believed could not be taught or forced. Aurora found more appreciation in music that she could create herself.

The mage pulled a book from her bag and started to read as the TV came on, making some mental notes to possibly give when she was done.
