There were squirrels running every which way, scampering up September's back to perch on his shoulder, chittering away to deliver messages. Sometimes he chittered back. Sometimes he just spoke in plain old English.
"Alright," September said, "new rule for all of you. I can't do anything to another person. I'm in enough trouble about the whole hijacking-the-internet thing, and apparently you need consent from someone before you do magic on them or something. Even if it's a good something."
September looked a bit put out by that whole thing.
"Which means I'm afraid I can't do your wish," he said to Dalia, handing the letter back to her. "But you can have another one entirely."
A squirrel scurried up September's back, holding up a small gem. It was the size of a small pearl, but instead seemed to glow with a radiance that could only be described as unearthly, and September plucked it from the squirrel's paws, holding it out to Zora.
"You'll want to eat that. Should fix your magic up, although it might take a few days. It'll fix your mana, get it all back in order."
Magic wasn't his strong suit, but that didn't particularly matter. One down was one down.
September next turned his attention to Jude, reaching out to take the letter and briefly inspecting it.
"Sure," September said. "Who, exactly? I'll let them know, and we'll see if we can't talk to that portal guy to get things going."
September didn't acknowledge Anh Sang, but a squirrel did, scurrying over and darting up their side to eventually rest on their shoulder. It wasn't like they could recognize them, but they were the one who had given Anh Sang their flower in the first place.
