Trent looked up from his papers in front of him on his desk in the front of the Class room. It was about time for his biology calls to start and he had the perfect specimen for the class to study today. Sitting just before his desk was a podium holding up the decaying heart of a very very old blue dragon. it was quite large, roughly twenty paces around. The class room was large enough though that it wasn't a hindrance to the room but rather looked like an appropriate center piece to the somewhat odd looking room. Full of charts and diagrams of creatures from his home plane. Everything from the Owl Bear to Undead Aberations to almost every form of Dragon Trent had encountered on his journeys and even if they were not present on the walls they could be found in the many manuscripts and tomes in stout book cases around the outside of the room.

As he gazed upon the heart of the Ancient blue dragon it sparked with electricity and there was a faint sound of muscles tensing from the heart itself as a moment latter there was a deep thump of the heart beating producing a sizable breeze through out the chamber. It had been doing this for the past two days and it was fascinating. He had been keeping the heart to see the stages of decay on the tissue of the blue dragon, what he had found some years ago watching the body in its resting place was that it did not decay as fast as other dragon corpses. He had eventually found as he had cut the tough hide under the steel strength scales was that the body was still pumping blood, dead blood but still blood, through the veins of the dragon. Once he was able to pull out the heart he found it still beating every so often with the energies that the dragon was able to command in life.

Utterly Facinating. Trent got up from his desk after rearranging the papers on his desk and walked over to the heart and placed a hand on the soft tissue of the still living flesh of the heart. He stood like that for a couple of minutes as he felt the tell tale signs of the energy about to arch through the thing and with out really having to think about it he altered his body to match the biology of the dragon and as the energy arched over the flesh his skin turned to blue scales and the energy was grounded going around his body rather then through as it went into the very floor.

He only came out of his fascination with the heart when he heard the door to his class room open and he stepped back from the Heart and gave a some what aged smile to the people entering his class room. "Welcome children, Welcome. Please take your seats, I think you're all going to enjoy today's lesson."

Saitou Yuzuru

It was his first class at the Academy and Yuzuru had a full checklist of things that he had to do in order to not embarrass himself and bring shame upon his family grandmother. Being unused to having such a wide variety of courses available, he had simply put his faith in his counselor's recommendations and said very little in way of complaints after seeing the final results. He felt that this class in particular would be very easy to become accustomed to. After all, it was simply biology, was it not?

He entered the classroom has discreetly as possible, taking a brief moment to introduce himself to his teacher, an older man with green-grey eyes and a face full of wrinkles. "My name is Sa- Yuzuru Saito," he said with a properly respectful bow, keeping his hands straight by his sides. Even so, he felt a twinge of annoyance at his slight stumble. "I am new to the school. It is nice to meet you."

It was hard to keep his eyes from wandering over to the desk, where a slab of meat was resting. An organ from a very large animal? he guessed. There seemed to be little unusual about it besides its size. The messiness of the blood made him want to click his teeth but he resisted the urge. He was in public, after all, and that would not do.

Trent watched as student came in to the room like a small stream all trying to arrive before the bell. Each had their own reaction to the dragon heart that sat in the room, one of the most pronounced was whos step halted for a moment, this made Trent smile. At least he wasn't a boreing teacher. Then the child made the astute observation that the heart was from no normal animal giving him a smile he gave his own smile of affirmation"That is correct lady Guinevere, I will explain its origins in a moment. Hopefully you find it as facinating as I do by the time we are done today."

It was that that his attention turned to the new student who he was expecting. "Ah yes, Mr Saitou I was expecting you. I do hope you enjoy my class, now let's see here..." Trent looked over the desks in the room trying to find a good spot for Yuzuru. There were not many spots but usually the front of the class room so he didn't have to look to hard for a spot for the boy to sit. "Mrs Guinevere would you mind if this young gentleman sat next to you for the day?" Trent said as he motioned for Yuzuru to take the spot next to Guinevere.

After taking another moment Trent with a small flick of hist wrist summoned a small scroll that held the names of his students. For a brief moment he could not read the fuzzy script before remembering that his human sight had begun to fail some thousand years ago and with a blink his eyes changed from human to the slitted irises of a dragon with copper coloration as he looked over it he flicked his gaze over the rest of the students. Shaking his head at the absences from the group he used a pen from a pocket on his robe before dismissing the scroll back to where it was summoned from.

After that Trent walked over to the heart and with a throat clearing cough he motioned for the class to quiet down as the bell rang. "Alrighty class, I know you're all asking each other. What is this organ that I have placed into the room? Before I answer, can I get a few guesses from you? Let's see what we can come up with ."

Saitou Yuzuru

Yuzuru took a seat next to a young lady with pale purple hair, passing a quick, cursory glance over her as he did. She had even dyed her eyebrows, he noticed. Strange, but it seemed like the act of a perfectionist so he privately decided that he most likely would not have an issue with her. He merely gave her a polite nod before turning his attention back to the teacher.

"The heart of a whale?" he guessed, after some deliberation. The size might have been right for it but he had no personal experience in that matter. "It seems fresh. Perhaps from around the area?" The answer which the other student suggested, a mammoth, was impossible, he thought. Although, he did admit that if those animals had not been extinct, it would have been plausible. On the other hand, Manta Carlos hardly seemed like the correct habitat.

Keeping a small knowing smile on his face Trent nodded to each of their answers trying to see if he could single out anyone saying the proper answer but it seemed like only few actually were close by guessing a lizard heart of some kind. Looking around the class he lifted a hand and had the class quiet down with a gesture. Only taking a couple moments having most of the class know how to act in his room. "This children, is the heart of and Ancient Chromatic Blue Dragon of an age of roughly five thousand years. When I found the corpse of it, the dragon had been dead for over one hundred years and hardly had any signs of decay on the body."

Almost as if on cue the heard seemed to tense on it's resting place before visible signs of electricity arching across it's tissue. The audible 'THUMP' of the heart as it stirred the air in the room the smell was that of slight decay, the heart wasn't even at the level needed to produce enough odor to be uncomfortable yet. "And as you can see, it still holds the energies of life tight in its grasp. Now class, I'd like you to answer me this. What is the method the Blue dragons use to store the electrical energies so taht they are able to produce their famed Lightning Bolt breath weapon?"

Saitou Yuzuru

Yuzuru was the image of unwavering calm but after the answer came out, he was internally shaken. He stared at the organ on display, then at the teacher. If this was a joke, then he had yet to find the reason for it. Had he accidentally been enrolled in theater instead? Mythology with an over obsessed teacher? Or, at the Academy, was genetic engineering considered to be simple enough to be offered to high school students as a class? He had known that people could be a little eccentric on the island but he had assumed that it would apply to the students, not the teachers, too.

He glanced to the side as the girl next to him gave her answer. Assuming her to be a usual student in this class, Yuzuru thought it best to see how she reacted to the explanation. It appeared that she took it as calmly as he wished he could feel, so perhaps she was simply used to this sort of situation. It was likely that she might also be one of the eccentrics but the way she held herself did not seem to support that.

There was a strange smell in the air, that seemed to come from no particular source. The most logical explanation would be that it had come from the heart but surely it was far too fresh for that? Or maybe this was some sort of effect to make it seem as old as the teacher claimed. Although, considering the fact that the man had said "it still holds the energies of life tight in its grasp," Yuzuru was even more confused.

Tentatively, he raised his hand. "I am afraid that I do not completely understand," the boy said, attempting to keep imitating his grandmother's calm. "When speak of this energy of life, I do not understand what you mean by that. The heart seems quite dead to me."

And that was without even touching the subject of breaths. Which, all in all, seem strangely like something he had overheard his parents talk about one time with some relatives so distant that there was no blood between them. Rawfuru or Lawful, he thought. Maybe it was a western custom to speak of such things.

Nodding appreciatively Trent noticed quite a number of student either aghast, amazed or unbelieving. Yuzuru had one of the larger reactions in the room and then he asked him a question and Trent put our a finger pointing in no real direction other then up and turning around going to the chalk board, so much better then the white boards other teachers used Trent thought. "Ahh that is true you were not here for that lecture. I might need to take some extra time later this week to catch you up on a few things." Trent picked up a piece of chalk and began to draw with no small lack of skill the minor details of the process of a blue dragon's horns collecting energy as he spoke.

"When I say energy of life I really mean the energies it controlled IN life." Trent also heard a few of the student shout out the answer of normal dragons. Yes usually a dragon contained it's Breath weapon in the lungs or the stomach. But Blues' were different, "During their life span a dragon is capable of amazing things, There are multitudes of dragon colors and anatomies but MOST dragon's do contain the deadly Breath Weapon where one would think. However the Electrical energies of a Blue are actually gathered from the Air itself. In my home dimension Blue's were rather rare so I did not learn this till much later in my life but..." Trent finished the drawing shortly after as he put the chalk back down and turned back to the class.

"A blue dragon uses very large spines or horns that are magically capable of gathering the energies in the air. When they are ready to breath out the energy they have it...pool... in their mouth before letting it rip through the air again and striking any being human, elf, magical or non magical in its path. This bolt can travel up to one hundred yard away when the Blue is full grown." Trent then gestured to the heart itself. "A dragon is full grown roughly one thousand years into it's life. But a lot of other species like Red dragons or the Metallic Gold dragon KEEP growing in size."

"Now... Class, as you know from your fancy smancy Science class that the heart is controlled by electrical impulses sent from the brain to it as it pumps having to get the timing just right. Now, as you can see..." The hear showed an Arc of electricity jump across its surface again as the heart contracted and expanded again. "This heart is still pumping when there is no brain to tell it other wise. So the heart was able to keep most of the internal flesh of the dragon from dieing off. Allowing the Corpse to seem only less then fresh for a hundred years before I pulled it out of the specimen."

Putting his arms straight on his desk he smiled up to the class in his fatherly way. "Any questions so far?"

Saitou Yuzuru

Yuzuru was torn between being appalled and being genuinely interested. Granted, the sheer amount of detail that was going into this lecture was impressive and had the makings of a good fantasy, but was this really the right place for it? Judging by the way other students reacted however, he thought that there were at least a few that seemed as incredulous as himself. Others, however, answered the teacher's questions with worrying alacrity.

Maybe if he stopped thinking of this class as biology and more of mythology, it would be easy to stomach this very detailed nonsense. But the point was that this was biology class and therefore, Yuzuru felt that he could not simply let the incident slide.

He raised his hand with a little more certainty before. "Teacher," he said, trying to keep his voice as politely calm as possible. "This is all very fascinating but in regards to the heart, I really do not see what are you explaining." Mainly, that even though it was appallingly bloody, it did not seem to still be functional. Certainly, he was seeing none of these impulses that were being spoken of.

It was good, Yuzuru thought, to focus on the more minor but concrete details of this situation. The heart was right there, therefore he should stay on that topic. All of the explanation of dragons and such were distant fantasies to be touched upon at a different time. Possibly soon. But in any case, it really was not proper to be too direct in that subject.

Nevertheless, a part of him was screaming very loudly, Dragons do not exist!

Raising both hands as if beginning a magical summoning Trent took the question from Guenevere with energy and Gusto. "I found the poor unfortunate specimen in a Dimension that was I'd say a half dozen to possibly a solid dozen Universal Splits away from this one." Trent of course using his own termanology for hopping between Planar Wheels. A Universal Split being the large historical and magical events that determined the fate of the Dimension.

"Poor boy died in his sleep from what I could tell." Trent said under his breath as he heard his next question being directed at him. "Ah yes, the point, I..." Trent paused a minute and looked between his latest student and the heart raising an eyebrow wrinkling his forehead a bit more. He mentally shrugged and kept going. "I brought this here today so that you young ones could glimps something magnificent as the working beating heart of a Dragon. In later classes I shall let some students who..." With another pause Trent with tremendous speed chucked the piece of chalk that was still in his hand at some punk kids in the back not paying attention.

"...Pay attention to my lectures, to disect the organ themselves. Now the heart of a dragon is very interesting. Instead of being a Binary heart pumping blood in one side and out the other, a dragon heart is quardrary. Blood comes into two different chambers of the heart and exit in another two. In this manner it allows dragons to have more powerful blood streams going through their body then any other organism in any dimension. It's already so quite fascinating." With a chuckle at his inside joke ment for himself he turned to the class.

"Now I know that this is a biology class and not some arts and crafts class but I want the class to group up into pairs for this next section. You will be needing a pencil and a piece of Paper. And you all all ready know what I expect, one boy one girl. No exceptions. Now hop to it. I want the pair with the visual aide of the heart in-front of you to design what you think the heart looks like inside." He then turned to two students that were sitting up front of the class.

"Mrs Guinevere and Mr Yuzuru please come to my desk for a moment I would like to speak with the two of you." He said as he gave them both a very 'I know you're up to something' look which usually dropped the bottom of the stomach out of even the most hardened punks in his class. He then walked over to his desk and sat down waiting for the two of them to come over to his desk.

Saitou Yuzuru

Yuzuru was confused, although he would be disgraced if any of that actually showed in any way outside of his questions. Maybe the fact that he had asked any at all was already a shame but the fact was, Yuzuru was quite convinced that something here was very unbearably wrong. It had always been a fault in his nature that in that sort of situation, he could be unusually open. If his grandmother had survived, surely she would have been able to dispel his bad habits.

Without gathering up any of his things, he walked to the front of the classroom, where that solemn looking girl stood. He did not think that she had done anything particularly wrong either and thus could not imagine what they were being called up for. Still, his eyes slid back to where that organ was on display.

Just what was so special about it? Yuzuru saw nothing truly out of the ordinary.
