“Did we really have to come here…?”

Vanyan wrung his hands nervously as he followed behind Jin through the section of the city known as ‘The Underground’. The whole area gave him a nervous vibe—well, everywhere outside of his home gave him a nervous vibe, but The Underground more so. Plus, he didn’t really have any interest in the types of shops that were in the area—or at least he assumed he didn’t. He was dragged by Jin—as per usual—because she wanted items to help her in rescuing her fellow selkies.

And if she found something she wanted, Vanyan was going to be the one to foot the bill. As per usual.

“You know what would be great? Temporary invisibility,” Jin said, really talking more so to herself than her companion. “That would make escaping so easy.”

Vanyan nodded absentmindedly—not really paying attention to what Jin was saying. This whole place gave him the creeps, and he was constantly looking over his shoulder. He did feel safer with Jin by his side, but that didn’t exactly make all of his paranoia disappear. He just wanted Jin to get this done and over with so he could go home…

…At least, until he passed by The Antoinette and something caught his eye through the window. He stopped in his tracks, and then tentatively approached the store to get a closer look. Jin nearly didn’t notice at first, but quickly backed up when she realized he wasn’t right behind her.

“What? Something you want?” Jin asked, squinting as she peered through the window herself.

“Um…sort of…” Vanyan muttered as he scratched at the back of his neck. “It’s the telescope over there…I’ve been thinking of getting one.”

“Oh. Let’s go in then!” Jin said as she headed for the door.

“W-we don’t really have to…”

“Too late—I want to go in now, so we’re going in now,” Jin replied—so of course Vanyan couldn’t argue with that. With a sigh, he followed behind her as she stopped at the door, tilting her head at the odd sign.

“Anti-electronic field? What does that mean?”

Vanyan considered for a moment, and then pulled out his cell phone.

“I think it means we better turn these off.”

“Oh,” Jin shrugged and stepped into the shop.

“D-do you not have your cell phone with you…?” Vanyan asked as he followed behind the selkie. “Didn’t I give it to you at home?”

“Yup. Guess I left it there,” Jin muttered, obviously apathetic to the issue of the cell phone as she started glancing over some of the jewelry. Oh it was so shiny…

“You should really keep that with you!” Vanyan replied with a frown. “In case of an emergency or something…”

“I can punch my way out of any sort of emergency,” Jin grunted. Then she pointed at a ring with an aquamarine gem on display. “You should buy me that.”

“Why would I buy you that?” Vanyan asked with a sigh, letting the cell phone issue slide. Jin did whatever she wanted—he knew better than to try and convince her to do anything.

“It’s shiny and reminds me of the ocean,” Jin replied before lifting her head. “You gonna look at your tele-whatever thing or what?”

“O-oh…right…” Vanyan bit his lip as he headed over to the aisle where he saw the telescopes on display. As he said, he was thinking of investing in a telescope—he just wasn’t sure if now was really the time to get one. Plus, if he did decide on getting one, he could just order it off the internet and, you know, not have to interact with a person during the buying process.

Speaking of interacting with a person, he wondered where the owner of the shop was…?

Yet again, Joshua found himself picking up after Niccolò's messes. It was getting to the point where the lawyer was actually paying him for it, though. So he wasn't sure if he could really be complaining anymore and truth be told, now that all of the crap from the last few months was dying down, Joshua had regained most of his usual ironclad patience. He didn't care much anymore what Niccolò did as long as he got a fair exchange of money for his time. That was all.

So that was why he was in the storeroom now, trying to clear out a big enough space to fit the Italian's body in. Niccolò had gone ahead and drank himself under for once. It was a rare occasion that had Joshua mentally calculating how much he was owed for putting up with it. It was a good amount, maybe the equivalent of selling one of the more uncommon magical tomes in the shop. At least Niccolò didn't snore; he would have been charged triple for that.

Can't put the swords next to the charms because they're enchanted with opposing magic and it'll defuse them. Should put the green books together because they're in a series and I can charge more for them if I show them like that. If I put the daggers up on the top shelf, it might wobble and then oops, no more Niccolò. It was a little like playing Tetris with himself, trying to get everything to fit in a way that wouldn't result in destruction of something.

In the past, he would have just used dark matter to suspend everything he couldn't be bothered to arrange properly but ever since that stint with those hitmen, Joshua had gotten rather paranoid. After that, he had started feeling this pressing need to have all the dark matter he could collect ready for an attack at any moment. Needless to say, that incident on Starlight Academy's campus was just serving to reinforce this urgency.

When he was done with his reorganization, he locked the door of the storeroom behind him. If Niccolò managed to wake up in the next few hours, he'd probably know to just knock and wait a few moments for Joshua to get around to opening it. Probably. Hopefully. Actually the shopkeeper wasn't too sure on that point but if he lost a door over it, that was coming right out of Niccolò's bank account anyways.

At the sound of voices coming from the front of the shop, Joshua couldn't help but be put on edge. Just two people, it sounded like. He thought they were making too much noise to be another couple of hitmen but hey, good help was hard to get these days. Frowning, he peered at them from between the gaps in the shelves and saw a familiar head of long, silvery hair.

Speak of the devil... Another reminder of why Manta Carlos had something against him, he swore. Not that he had anything personal against that woman. He just preferred to stay out of the way of things but it always seemed like there was a hook to drag him right back into a stupid situation.

Well, maybe she's just here to buy something. Or maybe somebody hired her as an assassin to lure him into a false sense of security. There could be a sniper waiting to get him outside. Several, maybe, since one wasn't enough last time. He couldn't know for sure but he also really didn't want to deal with that kind of crap with Niccolò in the backroom. I guess I'll just have to deal with it if there's actually a problem.

He walked out from behind the shelves into clear view, with a mass of dark matter hovering invisibly above him, ready to shield him from bullets, knives, fists, what have you. "Hey, you again, huh?" he said to that woman at a safe distance. "Nice to see you away from that place. How are things?"

It was just a bit distressing having to guess at what was going on, if in fact there was anything at all. But since this was Joshua, that distress was faint and barely there at all. They didn't look like they were going to start a fight with him, at least. So there was that.

Can that one even hold a weapon? he wondered as he glanced at that woman's companion. Slender, soft looking, and pale with green eyes. Actually pretty attractive. Joshua had to kill some time on adjusting his goggles because he was that taken off guard. Not that it was especially obvious; he was still lightly frowning.

The owner finally made himself known—albeit at kind of an odd distance—and it took Jin a moment to figure out why he seemed to know her.

“Oh! We fought that crazy bitch at the lake together!” Jin said with a big grin when she realized who he was.

Vanyan tilted his head toward her with a raised eyebrow. “When did you get into a fight at the lake…?”

“Don’t worry about it,” Jin replied, brushing him off. But of course Vanyan was going to worry about it. Why was Jin getting into fights? Did she start it? How did this shop owner get involved? What did Jin do this time?

Jin tilted her head over toward Vanyan. “He’s interested in buying one of those…uh, things.”

“Telescope, Jin. It’s to look at the stars.”

“Can’t you just go outside and look up?” Jin asked, then she suddenly turned and headed for another aisle. “I’m going to go look at more stuff.”

Of course she didn’t give Vanyan even a second to explain that a telescope was for seeing stars at a drastically closer view. She just left him with the shop owner, who was still keeping a distance away. Vanyan glanced over to him, having not really gotten a good look beforehand. He was so tall—even taller than Jin maybe? But despite the height, Vanyan found something soft in his look—the light skin, freckles, and blonde hair…

He seemed a bit stiff and uncomfortable…which was okay because that made two of them.

“Um…” Vanyan shifted his attention to the telescopes once more—feeling as though he may have stared just a bit too long at the shop owner.

“Well, she’s right, I have been considering investing in a telescope…I just happened to see these as I was passing by…they’re excellent quality…”

Vanyan already found himself wondering where Jin had wandered off to in the store. It has been a while since he had been dragged out of his home and had to, you know, interact with other people who weren’t a crazy selkie lady. Jin come back help me please.

Joshua couldn’t help but feel a bit relieved when the woman had what seemed to be a genuine moment of confusion. If she couldn’t even recognize him, that meant he was safe right? Or maybe she was just a fantastic actor, and her companion, too. That thought was what brought his guard right back up. Still, it was impossible to deny that there was something about surviving scarily overpowered homicidal maniacs that brought people together. He just wished that he could tell if that was being used against him or not.

At least she didn’t go on about the fight, he thought as her attention was caught by something else on a different aisle. He was really glad she hadn’t, actually. It was just too long of a story and therefore too much of a hassle to get through. There wasn’t too much of importance which had happened anyways, besides the fact that there was a crazy lady, people died, and most importantly, they hadn’t.

As much as the shopkeeper was happy to not have to get into something incredibly longwinded, though, that woman’s wandering off left him standing with this complete stranger. For a while, they simply studied each other in an awkward silence, during which Joshua found himself outright staring at the stranger’s face because if there was one thing that he really disliked doing, it was avoiding eye contact and looking like he had no idea what he was doing. It was fine if other people did it, but he preferred not to do it himself.

“Oh, thank you,” he said, blinking once at the partial compliment. “My friend is a lawyer. He makes sure that all of our transactions go down without a hitch. He’s pretty good at finding the better stuff out there.” What could he say? Credit had to be given where it was due.

His eyes flicked over to where that woman was browsing the shelves, making sure that was really what she was doing. Satisfied that she seemed to be exactly what she was –just another customer- Joshua turned his attention back to the other person. “If you don’t live far enough from the city to avoid the light pollution, you might want to try one getting one of these,” he said, coming up right next to the man in order to grab a box on a higher shelf. Inside of it was a bunch of hair thin concave glass disks emitting a faint glow.

“These will help get through the light if you need them. It costs a little more, of course, but it’s worth it if you don’t want to go all the way out to see the stars.”

Vanyan’s otherwise anxious expression lit up when Joshua brought down the box with the faint glow.

“Wow, that is…exactly what I need, actually,” Vanyan said as he peered into the box. Then he raised his head with a smile on his face. “I would much prefer to stay at home, so this will be perfect.”

Jin was indeed browsing the shelves with little to no care about Joshua and Vanyan. Rather, her interest laid with the shelves of unique books that Joshua had on display. She started browsing through them—obviously intent on finding specific information in each one. When she did come across what she was looking for, she would let out a low, annoyed growl and put the book back on the shelf—only to go to the next one that caught her interest.

Vanyan overheard her growling and started to get a little worried. “Jin, what are you doing?”

“I was just curious to see what some of these spellbooks had to say about Selkies and our powers.” She held up one of the more ancient spellbooks which appeared to be written in Latin. “They’re all the same though: ‘How to Tame a Selkie into your Personal Slave’ bullshit. Bunch of bastards who wrote these books...”

“Er, I see…” Vanyan murmured nervously. Jin was just going to piss herself off if she kept looking through those books—unless maybe he could get her on another topic. “I…was not aware you could read Latin?”

“What, you can’t?” Jin answered with a shrug as she placed the book back on the shelf and started reaching for another. Crap, he needed a better way to distract her.

“Weren’t you interested in, um, an item that can make you invisible or something?”

Jin stopped reaching then and turned to the two men. “I was, wasn’t I?” Vanyan let out a small sigh of relief at her response. Just like that she no longer cared about the books.

“So, you do have something like that?” Jin asked as she approached Joshua. Her hands rested on her hips as she gave Joshua a quick look over—since she hadn’t really bothered or cared about him until she had to ask him something. “Like a…something that could grant a person temporary invisibility? Because that would be incredibly useful.”

He nodded at the other man’s words, falling back into his usual routine as the last shreds of unease left him. “I wouldn’t leave home if I couldn’t help it either,” Joshua said. “The commute from here and back is a pain but I’ve got to make a living somehow and I’d really rather not live in the backroom.” Not to mention, it made him feel just a little paranoid knowing that people might know where he lived. It wasn’t that he intentionally kept that information a secret –otherwise some stupid kids would take that as a challenge and try and find it anyways– he just wouldn’t offer it upfront.

“So which telescope are you thinking of getting? Some of them have different sized lenses so we’ll have to find a fit for it.” The shopkeeper leaned in a bit to get a better look at the model that the man had been considering, already trying to eye a match. Frowning in thought, he wondered if this was that one he had been having issues with. It was a perfectly functional, magicless telescope, but the lens had a slightly larger circumference than the others so he hadn’t found a filter for it just yet. He was actually considering asking that deaf girl who came in from time to time to see if she could do anything about that. It seemed like she had some magic with glass, so it shouldn’t be that hard for her, right? The only real problems, then, would be the two language barriers.

Joshua’s attention was diverted by the man calling out to the woman, Jin, and remembered suddenly that Oh yeah, she’s a selkie isn’t she? He himself had no idea how to read Latin but he had heard from people in the past that a lot of the older books he had weren’t especially kind to nonhumans. Maybe he should start putting up signs for that, too, but he was sure that like the one outside, there would be some people who wouldn’t read it and then bitch about it afterwards. Then again, they’d bitch if he didn’t have one up either but in that case, he would have wasted that much less effort caring.

“Invisibility? I might have some things that would do that. I’d have to check, though, to be sure.” That was a pretty common request and to be honest, he sometimes told people that he didn’t have any invisibility potions, cloaks, rings –whatever– in stock anymore. As much as Joshua really didn’t care about what they got up to with all that, there might be trouble between him and law enforcement if something unfortunate were to happen. Sure, he had Niccolò to help him out if it came to that. And yes, sure. Joshua believed that the man was a competent lawyer. But it was still better just not to get to into that situation at all, right?

Looking at Jin with discreet suspicion, he said in a bland voice, “You’re not planning on committing any crimes, are you?”

Jin raised an eyebrow as she crossed her arms in front of her. Damnit, she wanted to tower over people and frown down at them in situations like this and it was pissing her off to no end that this guy was actually slightly taller than her.

“’Scuse you—I am saving lives.”

Despite him keeping a smile on his face, the smallest of groans came from Vanyan’s tight-lipped mouth. He knew what was coming: one of Jin’s tangents he had heard many times before.

“I am an anomaly among my kind. I’m huge and aggressive, while most of my kind are rather small and meek—and easily taken advantage of. There are selkies all over the place being abused and forced into slavery because they’re easy targets.”

“She’s a hero among her kind, believe it or not,” Vanyan suddenly interjected. This simple act would hopefully make Jin’s tangent a lot shorter by making her lose her train of thought.

“Er…yeah. What he said,” Jin muttered. When she lowered her voice and her eyes darted away from the two, Vanyan knew he was successful.

“Right, well…long story short: I’m saving them because no one else will. And because I’m big and scary so I might as well make use of it.”

That felt a lot more anticlimactic then she would have liked. She scowled and glared at Vanyan, because she knew it was his fault. Vanyan let out an awkward little laugh in return.

“Right, well…basically she wants to find equipment to make these rescues safer.” Vanyan explained. “Just quickly sneak the selkies and their skin out quickly without anyone getting hurt. Right, Jin?”

“…Sure.” Jin agreed reluctantly. She liked hurting the bastards who kept selkie slaves, but she understood why Vanyan was steering in that direction.

A hero, huh? He tried really hard not to have a visible reaction to that declaration but his eyebrows still went up a bit in surprise. Truthfully, he didn't put much stock in things like that because it was so hard to tell if somebody was trying to pull a fast one on him. Sometimes people actually managed to delude themselves into believing their own bullshit, too. In those instances, it was best to just humor them and send them off as quickly as possible.

Then again, Joshua had seen the selkie in a fight before, so she definitely had the strength to back any claims of that sort. She had been pretty brutal with the mage but it wasn't like he wasn't the same way when things came down to it. There was just no nice way of describing what it was like to rip a living, breathing person apart with a black hole. It was probably morally wrong to do so, but that was just a guess on his part. At least he could sleep through the night, figuratively speaking.

The shopkeeper glanced at the other man, thinking that honestly, he would be the final factor in his decision whether or not to take the selkie at her word. Even though logically, Joshua knew that he shouldn't be basing things off of appearances, he just couldn't help but think that that man had a trustworthy face. He frowned a little to himself.

Oh, what the hell. It's not my problem anyways.

"All right, all right," Joshua conceded. "I might have something like that around here. Follow me." He withdrew to the back of the shop, gesturing slightly in front of himself with his hands. That was to get the dark matter rearranged. If Niccolò was going to start snoring in the backroom, he wanted to make sure it wouldn't be enough noise to scare off anybody.

He came to the display case in the center, unlocking it with dark matter as he approached. From the the back of the lower shelf, he brought out a box of rings, six in all. Pointing at them from left to right, he described what they did.

"This one is the weakest. Rather than making you invisible, it would just make people less likely to notice you. If you're standing right in front of them, it obviously won't work. This one next to it will turn you invisible, but it's spotty and likes to flicker out whenever somebody gets too close. It's only stable for a few minutes at a time. Maybe fifteen tops. These two in the middle are pretty reliable but if it's too bright where you are, people are going to notice strange distortions in the light where you're standing. This next one is better about the distortions. The last one barely has any distortions at all."
